Hij was een echte Brusselaar met roots in de Antwerpse Polder en Ossendrecht (Nederland). Voor een uitgebreide biografie kunt u terecht op http://martenmelsen.free.fr/index_N.htm Na eerst in 1894 een lange zomerperiode met een vriend-kunstschilder rond Stabroek en Berendrecht te hebben geschilderd n gefotografeerd, beslist Melsen om rond 1896 permanent naar Stabroek te trekken. Hij huurt een stuk in de driewoonst van de enorme boerin Mie Pot, die hij daarna regelmatig op zeer sappige en originele wijze heeft vereeuwigd op doek. Melsen?s oeuvre wordt bekend, hij verkoopt vanaf 1907 aan musea en wordt bevriend met Stijn Streuvels en James Ensor. Na zijn huwelijk in 1909 met de nicht van zijn boezemvriend, de befaamde toondichter August De Boeck, koopt hij rond 1912 twee huisjes aan het Hoogeind te Stabroek, die hij liet ombouwen tot kunstatelier ?t Vossevelt genaamd. De daarop volgende prille gezinsjaren worden een mooie periode van regelmatige tentoonstellingen en persoonlijk succes, dat plots door elkaar geschud worden in het oorlogsjaar 1914 door het drama van het verschrikkelijk conflict, dat jaren gaat duren. Deze thematentoonstelling in het Poldermuseum toont hoe de kunstenaar tijdens die harde oorlogsjaren heeft kunnen overleven, waarin hij nieuwe inspiratie heeft gevonden, en welke kunstwerken hij maakte in een tijd dat schildersmateriaal moeilijk verkrijgbaar was en reizen praktisch onmogelijk werd. ISBN 9782503611143.‎ ‎Summary Like other Jewish works from the late Second Temple period, Psalms of Solomon alludes constantly to passages in Scripture?particularly the Pentateuch, the Prophetic books and Psalms. Gathering all passages where the Psalms of Solomon refer to a specific verse in Scripture, the present monograph ventures to analyze the authors' use of Scripture and to identify the textual tradition underlying the allusions. The conclusion this leads to is that the authors used a Greek version, close to the Septuagint but sporadically revised on the basis of the proto-Masoretic Hebrew text. This conclusion agrees with recent research on revisionary work on the Septuagint, which must have begun in the first century BCE, long before the named recensions of the second century CE (Aquila, Symmachus, Theodotion). The textual analysis casts a new light on the Psalms of Solomon. Although they came into being in Jerusalem in the aftermath of Pompey's conquest of the city in 63 BCE, they were not composed in Hebrew, but in Greek. The identity of the Greek-speaking group that produced the Psalms of Solomon, and their religious views, are discussed in the final chapter of this monograph. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1. But a year has passed and on it goes, the larking, the scouring, the scavenging. One tea towel after another filled with coins, marbles, pipes. Finds have a strange hold over us. There?s a magic to them that shines on a lot longer than the soon fading glimmer of things we intentionally choose. That purposefulness is probably what kills our enthusiasm after a week or so. Because when we make a choice, there?s too much of ourselves in the object already. We don?t deem a consciously picked item deserving of a tea towel display. The more trash we?ve dug through to get to our treasure, the more it becomes. Hence the mud-crusted trouvailles. We?ve had to make our hands dirty and?like any good romance?half the pleasure lies in the hunt. So we go hunting for crap that?s out of place. Crap that becomes a find, simply because it was lost. A diamond is nothing very special in a jewellery store, but it?s everything when found among discarded fish. Yet maybe the real reason for this endless trawlings for trinkets is another story altogether. Not that of a seventeenth-century mariner tossing a coin into the Scheldt to buy a safe passage, but the belief that we're not the ones that find the perfectly rounded rock, it's the pebble that finds us.
