März 1858 in Karlsbad, Böhmen; ? 21. Juni 1943 in Karlsbad, Sudetengau) war ein deutschböhmischer Heimatforscher und Schriftsteller. Josef Hofmann war ein Sohn des städtischen Beamten Theobald Josef Hofmann und der Aloisia Hofmann, geb. Thoma. Sein Karlsbader Elternhaus trug den Namen "Weißes Reh". Er besuchte ab 1870 das Gymnasium in Elbogen und danach die Lehrerbildungsanstalt in Komotau. Anschließend wurde er im August 1879 Aushilfslehrer an der Karlsbader Volks- und Bürgerschule, 1887 Fachlehrer, 1916 Direktor und 1919 trat er in den Ruhestand. 1890 gründete Hofmann eine dreiklassige gewerbliche Fortbildungsschule, die sich 20 Jahre später auf 26 Klassen erweitert hatte. Er war Stadtverordneter in Karlsbad und gründete auch den Karlsbader Gewerbeverein, dessen Mitglied er 38 Jahre lang war. Von 1901 bis 1904 war er Mitglied des böhmischen Landtages. Hofmann versuchte Zeit seines Erwachsenenlebens die Egerländer Volkskultur, deren Bräuche, Trachten, Handwerke usw., die schon Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts langsam in Vergessenheit gerieten, zu dokumentieren, beschreiben und zu bewahren. Er reiste durch das Egerland, zeichnete, fotografierte, hörte sich Geschichten und Sagen an. ‎* Walter Karnapp (* 11. September 1902 in Bahrenhof; ? 5. Februar 1994 in München) war ein deutscher Bauforscher. Walter Karnapp studierte in den Jahren 1923 bis 1928 Architektur an der Technischen Hochschule in Danzig. Es folgte die Ausbildung zum Regierungsbauführer im Staatsdienst. Dabei führte ihn sein Weg vom Stadtbauamt in Cottbus über die Neubauleitung der Pädagogischen Akademie in Frankfurt an der Oder und das Hochbauamt II in Potsdam schließlich an die Regierung in Potsdam. 1931 schloss er mit der Staatsprüfung zum Regierungsbaumeister in Berlin ab. Von 1932 bis 1934 war Karnapp Assistent bei Fritz Krischen am Lehrstuhl für Baugeschichte und Formenlehre der Antike an der Technischen Hochschule in Danzig. Mit dem Reisestipendium des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts folgte von 1935 bis 1936 ein Aufenthalt in der Türkei und in Griechenland. In den Jahren 1939 bis 1945 war Karnapp in Nachfolge seines Lehrers Fritz Krischen als ordentlicher Professor am Lehrstuhl für Baugeschichte und Formenlehre der Antike der Technischen Hochschule Danzig tätig. Unterbrochen durch die Einberufung zum Militärdienst 1944 mit anschließender Kriegsgefangenschaft in Russland konnte Karnapp erst nach seiner Heimkehr 1949 bei einem Architekturbüro in Essen als Mitarbeiter unterkommen. Von 1951 bis 1959 war er Baupfleger der Stadt Essen. 1954 bis 1973 nahm er an einer Ausgrabung und Bauforschung in Resafa (Syrien) teil. 1959 erhielt er eine ordentliche Professur an der Technischen Hochschule München am Lehrstuhl für Freihandzeichnen und Perspektive. 1966 wurde er Dekan der Fakultät für Bauwesen und 1969 Ordentliches Mitglied des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts Berlin. 1970 wurde Karnapp emeritiert. ‎Summary Crusading and western interaction with the Holy Land is often a contentious topic, not least because modern popular perception of medieval east-west contact is that it was defined by violence, conquest, and religious persecution. Building on recent scholarship, this collection of essays takes an interdisciplinary approach to the role of crusading and contact with the Holy Land in medieval Britain in order to investigate the myriad ways in which these contacts influenced artistic, literary, visual, and social culture in medieval Britain. By looking at new material and focusing on the domestic response to crusading and the Holy Land, the contributions gathered here offer new insights into the influence of these contacts on the medieval British world view, as well as their impact on topics such as ideals about masculinity and kingship, geographical perception, and aspirational codes of conduct for the medieval British elite.
