Chaque numéro de cette collection inventorie l'oeuvre construit d'un des grands ateliers de création architecturale du XXème siècle : Frank LLoyd Wright, Frank O. Gehry, Ricardo Bofill, etc. Le présent n°8 est consacré à Tadao Ando et ses associés, et couvre la période 1972-1987. Les projets sont présentés chronologiquement, au moyen de photographies, vues en plan, dessins et textes en deux langues : anglais et japonais. Quelques photographies sont en couleurs, mais la plupart sont en noir & blanc. Ce parti esthétique est au service du style Ando qui privilégie les jeux de lumière, de ligne, surface, pleins et vides et rapports de taille. En cela, ses projets s'inscrivent pleinement dans le mouvement moderne de l'architecture du XXème siècle. L'oeuvre d'Ando se singularise par la matière béton brut dont les caractéristiques visuelles sont valorisées. Par ailleurs, les bâtiments d'Ando sont toujours pensés dans un rapport conscient et soigné du dedans/dehors. Formes de la structure et ouvertures sur l'extérieur sont une invitation au parcours, au cheminement au sein du bâtiment. Yukio Futagawa : éditeur et photographe. Kenneth Frampton : auteur.
