‎Emile Van Doren werd in 1865 geboren. Hij groeide op als zoon van een spekslager in hartje Brussel. Als jonge student aan de Academie des Beaux-Arts van Brussel kwam hij voor het eerst aan in Genk rond 1890. Niet toevallig: Genk was op dat moment uitgegroeid tot een van de meest geliefde kunstenaarsoorden van Belgie. Honderden schilders gingen Van Doren vooraf, maar hij was de eerste die van Genk zijn permanente thuis zou maken. Hij bouwde er, samen met Cidonie Raikem, Hotel des Artistes uit, dat een trefplaats werd voor kunstenaars en gegoede toeristen. Zijn hotel gebruikte hij bovendien als galerie om zijn schilderijen aan de man te brengen. Tegelijkertijd bleef hij nationaal en internationaal tentoonstellen en belandde zijn werk o.a. in belangrijke collecties. Genk en zijn landschap speelden daarin de hoofdrol. Dat werk lag trouwens erg goed in de markt, vooral bij de adel en de gegoede burgerij. Emile Van Doren is de allereerste kunstenaar-ondernemer van Genk. Met zijn werk verspreidde hij de naam en faam van zijn nieuwe thuis doorheen het land en ver daarbuiten. Bovendien bouwde hij met zijn schilderijen een aanzienlijk fortuin op dat het mogelijk maakte dat hij met zijn familie vanaf 1913 in villa Le Coin Perdu (vandaag het Emile Van Dorenmuseum) een luxueus leven kon leiden. In 2015 herdenkt Genk een jaar lang de 150ste geboortedag van de kunstenaar, met o.a. twee tentoonstellingen in C-mine en een derde in het Emile Van Dorenmuseum. ‎En filigrane de cet ouvrage se profile la certitude que dans nos villes modernes, la notion traditionnelle d'espace urbain a disparu. Ce que signifie cette disparition peut être compris par tous les citadins un tant soit peu avertis, dotés d'une sensibilité suffisante pour comparer les réalisations urbanistiques actuelles a celles du passé, et determinés à se faire une opinion sur la façon dont les choses ont evolué. Mais ce simple constat ne peut à lui seul faire progresser la recherche urbanistique. Il faut définir clairement ce qu'est l'espace urbain, montrer l'importance qu'il peut avoir dans un contexte urbain, et ensuite analyser si la référence à cette notion se justifie dans l'urbanisme contemporain. Le concept d'espace fait aujourd'hui l'objet d'âpres polémiques ; mon propos n'est pas ici de lui trouver une nouvelle définition mais, au contraire, de réactualiser sa signification originelle.
