‎Hackaert ist vermutlich zwischen dem 26.07. und 24.08.1654 oder zwischen dem 26.07.1654 und 28.05.1655 in Italien gewesen. Darüber hinaus sind Ansichten von Martigny und bei Lausanne in alten Katalogen nachzuweisen. Hackaerts Lehrer sind nicht bekannt. Reisen in die Schweiz und nach Italien sind durch einen Klebeband belegt, der sich im Besitz des Kunsthauses Zürich befindet. Zeichnungen mit Schweizer Motiven befinden sich in dem berühmten Atlas von Joan Blaeu (Kartograph, 1596-1673) in der Nationalbibliothek in Wien. Hackaert zeichnete holländische und italienische Landschaften, Flußtäler mit bewaldeten Hängen. Entweder sind es einfache lavierte Federskizzen nach der Natur oder durchgeführte Landschaftskompositionen, die an seine selteneren Gemälde erinnern. Charakteristisch ist die umrahmende Zeichnung des Blattwerkes und eine kleine skizzenhafte Staffage. Auch ist das Sonnenlicht, das um Stamm und Laub spielt, besonders betont.‎

‎Wie man bei Goethe nachlesen kann, unternahm Hackert im Jahr 1764 eine Reise nach Schweden: ?Im Mai 1764 reiste Baron Olthoff nach Stockholm, wohin er Hackert mit sich nahm und bei Hofe bekannt machte. Der fleißige Künstler sammelte sich wieder ein Menge Studien,.. () verfertigte mehrere Zeichnungen für die Königin, und ging mit Aufträgen von Baron Olthoff im September wieder nach Stralsund zurück.? (J.W. von Goethe, Werke. Sophien-Ausgabe. Weimar 1891, Band 46 (Winckelmann, Philipp Hackert), S. 118-119). In den Werkstätten seines Vaters Philipp Hackert hat Hackert bereits die Grundlagen für seine künstlerische Ausbildung erworben. 1758 setzte er sein Studium an der Zeichenklasse der Königl. Akademie in Berlin fort, die von Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur (1714-1783) geleitet wurde. Hier trat er mit seinen ersten Landschaften mit Motiven aus dem Berliner Tiergarten hervor. 1762 reiste er als Begleiter des schwedischen Regierungsrats Friedrich von Olthoff nach Stralsund, auf die Insel Rügen und nach Stockholm., wo er verschiedene Aufträge ausführte. 1765 brach er zu einem mehrjährigen Aufenthalt nach Paris auf. Dort war er in der engeren Umgebung von Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) tätig und es bestand auch ein näherer Kontakt zu dem Landschafts- und Marinemaler Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Auf Studienreisen in die Normandie entstanden zahlreiche Skizzen. 1768 ließ sich Hackert zusammen mit seinem Bruder Johann Gottlieb (1744-1773), mit dem er eng zusammenarbeitete, in Rom nieder. Hier gehörte er zu dem Kreis um Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807) und den Hofrat Johann Friedrich von Reiffenstein (1719-1793) an. Zu dieser Zeit war Hackert bereits zu einem international gefragten Künstler avanciert. 1770 besuchte er zum ersten Mal Neapel. 1777 bereiste er mit Richard Payne Knight (1750-1824) und Charles Gore (1729-1807) Sizilien. Nach seiner Ernennung zum Hofmaler des Königs von Neapel, Ferdinand IV., 1786 verlegte er seinen Wohnsitz nach Neapel. Auch von hier aus widmete er sich auf regelmäßigen Studienreisen bzw. Wanderungen dem Landschaftsstudium. Auf seiner italienischen Reise lernte Goethe 1787 Hackert in Neapel kennen und ließ sich von dem von ihm geschätzten Künstler im Zeichnen unterrichten. Als auch in Neapel revolutionäre Unruhen ausbrachen und die Franzosen in das Königreich einmarschierten, floh Hackert nach Oberitalien und verbrachte weiterhin tätig seine letzten Lebensjahre in der Toskana.‎

First edition of this rare monumental two-volume set in which an inventory is kept of almost all architectural buildings such as mosques, masjids, fountains, schools, and lodges in Ottoman Istanbul and its surroundings, built since Sultan Mehmet II up to 1768, in a traveler style, by Ayvansarayî, who was hafiz and janissary sekban who lived in the 18th century. "This excellent book has an extremely important place in the literature not only in terms of architectural works and topography but also as a historical source of Constantinople". (Hammer). Long recognized by Turkish scholars as a unique source of Istanbul's architecture and urban form, the text, which was started in 1182 (1768-69) and completed in 1195/1780 and revised and enlarged between 1248/1832-33 and 1253/1838 by Ali Sati, son of Mahmud Efendi, one of the judges of Medina, contains separate descriptions of each of Istanbul's more than 800 mosques, plus accounts of its madrasahs, tombs, tekkes and other monuments. The annotations place each of these buildings within the city's urban plan and provide biographical information about the patrons, architects, and other personalities mentioned in the text. Ayvansarayi's original text, which survives in a number of manuscript copies, was enlarged in the 1830s by Ali Sati Efendi, whose reworking was published in print in 1865 and has thus become the best-known version of the Hadika. The author, who first visited the mosques and masjids inside the city walls in a topographic order, then examined the ones outside the city walls, then discussed Eyüp, Galata, both sides of the Bosphorus, Üsküdar (Scutari), Kadiköy (Khalkedon) mosques and masjids.
