Phoebus is de zonnegod naar wie The Phoebus Foundation is genoemd. Hij is de beschermer van de muzen en dus van de kunsten. Hans Vlieghe ( 1939) studeerde kunstgeschiedenis aan de universiteit van Gent, waar hij ook enkele jaren werkzaam was als assistent. Hij promoveerde in 1967 over het oeuvre van de Antwerpse kunstschilder Gaspar De Crayer. Na diverse studie- en onderzoeksverblijven in M nchen, Londen, Firenze en Rome ging hij als wetenschappelijk medewerker aan de slag in wat nu het Centrum Rubenianum heet. Daar is hij tevens lid van de raad van bestuur en werkt hij mee aan het Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard. Sinds 1990 is hij lid van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van Belgi voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen. Als hoogleraar was Vlieghe verbonden aan de universiteiten van Antwerpen en Leuven. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de Vlaamse schilderkunst van de zeventiende eeuw. Naast zijn onderzoek over De Crayer schreef hij tal van publicaties over (onder meer) Peter Paul Rubens en schilders uit diens entourage, over David II Teniers en Jan Boeckhorst. Many artists take inspiration from existing works of art they?ve generally come into contact with when growing up, often in books or magazines, sometimes in museums and galleries. Carole Vanderlinden loves to read and to leaf through books, but her main interest is visiting museums of ancient or ethnographic art. In general, she looks for any event, drawing, object, pattern, colour and rhythm that speaks to her. Joining her on two of these trips of discovery, once in Brussels and once in Paris, she can be fascinated by the most diverse objects, such as a zigzag Navajo carpet, Egyptian alabaster Canopic jars dating back to 1500 BC, 18th-century glazed biscuit from Tournai or a herbarium. These objects and their colours and rhythms are copied in notebooks, often with an accompanying text. Later she might re-paint them on paper creating new combinations or compositions. These works on paper usually remain quite light, with a lot of cut-outs, like minimalist collages. In parallel Vanderlinden works on her paintings without any preconceived idea. Layer after layer the paintings try to avoid being controlled or supervised in any way. Sometimes we see patterns emerge that are familiar from her works on paper. These patterns are used as ways of countering a painting, destabilising it, recreating a balance or finishing it. During this practice, the patterns become more compact and dense. ISBN 9789463015165.‎ ‎Leo Gestel en Gustave De Smet, vluchtelingen ? zielsverwanten Gestel (1881-1941) en De Smet (1877-1943) kregen beiden de eerste schilderlessen van hun vader en kozen op jonge leeftijd voor een leven als vrij kunstenaar. Ze behoorden elk in eigen land al gauw tot de voorhoede, die het klassieke academische wilde afschudden en op zoek gingen naar stijlvernieuwingen. In Nederland waren dat Gestel, Sluijters en Mondriaan; in Vlaanderen De Smet met onder meer van den Berghe en Permeke. De Duitse inval in Belgi deed De Smet in 1914 naar Nederland vluchten waar hij Gestel ontmoette, die hem introduceerde in de Amsterdamse kunstwereld. De vernieuwingsdrift bracht beiden uiteindelijk tot het expressionisme, waarbij De Smet sterk be nvloed werd door de Nederlandse modernen. Begin jaren twintig keerde hij terug naar Belgi , waar hij met enkele medestanders de in Nederland opgedane ervaringen uitdroeg. Kort daarna zocht Gestel na een buitenechtelijk avontuur zijn toevlucht tot de Leiestreek en woonde hij in het Heilig Huizeken te Drongen. In die periode 1925-1927 kwam hij tot rust te midden van zijn Belgische vrienden en onderging hij op zijn beurt de invloed van het Vlaams expressionisme. We zien hoe zij zich gesteund voelden in het land van de ander, we lezen in hun brieven over hun ups en downs, en we komen iets meer te weten over hun vriendschap en hun persoonlijkheid.
