‎Renaissance Music in the Slavic World‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 304 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:32 b/w, Languages: English, French, Italian. ISBN 9782503582429.‎

‎Summary In the essays collected in this volume, leading scholars from Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well musicologists from Western Europe, take on the challenge of fulfilling a historiographical and cultural gap in music history by restoring the place of the countries of Central Europe that, as Milan Kundera put it succinctly, 'vanished from the map of the West'. The opportunity to consider 'other' renaissances enlarges the historiographical perspectives of Renaissance musicology, going beyond the traditional focus on the Franco-Flemish or Franco-Italian axis, and opens new scenarios on unexplored Renaissance music. What was it that happened on a cultural and musical level on the Dalmatian coast - influenced by the economic boost of a powerful Venice? The same question emerges when considering Habsburg Prague and its renewed, central role in the European political theatre, and as a reaffirmed capital that inaugurated a period of economic and cultural renaissance for the Bohemian Kingdom. How did the secularization process evolve in these territories, caught between the religion wars following the Counter-Reformation in the West, and the Turkish threat on the East? What peculiar features does the musical production of these territories reveal? The preference accorded to the expression Renaissance Music is not to be intended as a shortcut. The intention of the contributing scholars is to focus on, and to handle independently, the endogenous cultural production without considering it only as a phenomenon of importation or as the mere imitation of an existing model. In this way, borders reveal a dialectical function in the context of musical Humanism, revealing here, maybe for the first time, an authentic European dimension. The essays in this volume were undertaken within the framework of the European programme EACEA - Culture Programme 2007-2013 Aux confins de l'Humanisme musical: monde slave et culture m diterran enne, developed between 2010 and 2012 by the Centre d' tudes sup rieures de la Renaissance in Tours, the Matica Hrvastka - Ogranak Dubrovnik (Mediterranean Study Centre of Dubrovnik), the Univerzita Karlova v Praze, and the University of Palermo. ‎Summary Graffiti is increasingly being recognised as an important historical source that can provide first-hand information on the written cultures of past societies. This book presents a wide variety of approaches to the how and why of graffiti production in medieval and early modern societies. Geographically, the book ranges from Italy to Russia, by way of the insular and Nordic worlds, and beyond, to the Holy Land and early medieval Nubia. Attention is given to information which will lead to the development of the historical criticism of graffiti, including the best practices for photography. A bibliography of the publications on medieval graffiti which have come out since 2000 is hoped to further the development of future scholarship. While there is extensive scholarship on graffiti in classical Antiquity, other historical graffiti remains understudied. This volume provides an overview of studies on graffiti for medieval and early modern cultures as well as a platform for future research. ‎Historical and Cultural Memory of the Babylonian World. Collecting Fragments from the 'Centre of the World'‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, viii + 193 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:28 b/w, 5 col., 2 tables b/w., 2 maps b/w, 1 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503595368.‎

‎Summary In the study of the ancient world, Babylon can be considered as the most impressive representation, historically, archaeologically, and in literature, of urbanism in the Near East. This first example of an urban centre and its cultural heritage ? both tangible and intangible ? provides a focal point for discussions of historical and cultural memory in the region. The eleven contributions gathered here draw together multidisciplinary research into Babylonian culture, exploring the epistemic foundations, contacts, resilience, and cultural transmission of the city and its milieu from ancient times up until the modern day. Through this approach, this volume is able to support conversations concerning the historical and cultural memory of Babylon and promote a dialogue that cuts across, and unites, both cultures and academic disciplines. ‎TEMPLE DECORATION AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THE ARCHAIC GREEK WORLD The Metopes of Selinus‎

‎Lower corners bumped. ; In this book, Clemente Marconi provides a new interpretation for the use of figural decoration in Greek temples of the Archaic period, through a study of the Archaic metopes of Selinus. The study of figural decoration on Greek temples has traditionally been identified with the broader study of architectural sculpture. At the same time, the original, articulated appearance of Archaic temples has been fragmented into a discussion of individual types. Marconi argues against both the typological approach and the tendency to investigate style and iconography as two aspects unrelated to the cultural and social background within which temple decoration operated. He explores the relation between style and function and examines the function of figures on temples within the cultural and social context of the communities for which these images were created. Critical to this exploration are the reintegration of the figures into the fabric of buildings, the space of Archaic sanctuaries and cities, and the ritual dimension that represented the context for the reception of the figural decoration of Greek temples. Marconi argues for a closer interaction between art history and disciplines such as semiotics, anthropology, and hermeneutics. ; 10.3 X 7.1 X 1.1 inches; 370 pages‎

‎CLEMENTIS ALEXANDRINI PROTREPTICUS‎

‎Minor bump to top corners. ; Vigiliae Christianae, Supplements , No 34; 0.85 x 9.64 x 6.38 Inches; 240 pages; Clement of Alexandria (ca A.D. 150-215) is one of the leading Church Fathers and the first Christian philosopher. His early Protrepticus is of great significance for Patristics, Classical scholarship, Greek philosophy and religion. The treatise is preserved virtually in a single manuscript --the famous Codex Arethae, Parisinus graecus 451, copied in 913-914,-- which proves to be lacunose, corrupt, interpolated and dislocated. The only critical edition of the Protrepticus was prepared back in 1905 by Otto Stahlin (G.C.S., Volume 12). The present edition is based on a thorough in-depth study of the Parisinus, on the inclusion of the entire opus of Clement, on an extended and updated Quellenforschung, and finally, on a more sensitive approach to meaning and textual criticism. The edition includes the Scholia.‎

‎Mardges Bacon T‎

‎Corbusier in America Travels in the Land of the Timid‎

‎Hardcover with dusjacket, 424 PAGES Illustrated. ISBN 9780262024792. How Le Corbusier's first trip to the United States shaped his critique of the country and affected both his work and the diffusion of his ideas. Le Corbusier's first trip to the United States in 1935 is generally considered a failure because it produced no commissions. The experience nevertheless had a profound effect on him, both personally and professionally. Sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Le Corbusier promoted his ideas through a lecture tour, exhibition, and press conferences, as well as in meetings with industrialists, housing reformers, New Deal technocrats, and editors. His lectures were watershed events that advanced the cause of European modernism. Yet he returned to France empty-handed and published a bittersweet account, Quand les Cathedrales etaient blanches: Voyage au Pays des Timid Personnes (When the Cathedrals Were White: Journey to the Country of Timid People), which faulted America for lacking the courage to adopt his ideas. In this first major study of Le Corbusier's American tour, Mardges Bacon reconstructs his encounter with America in all its fascinating detail. Through extensive archival research and interviews, she presents a critical history of the tour as well as a nuanced and intimate portrait of the architect. Drawing on the methods of microhistory, she also considers how small ordinary events affect larger biographical, architectural, and cultural developments. Bacon notes that Le Corbusier's dialogue with America was drafted within a spirited European discourse on Americanisme. She contends that the trip validated his concept of a second machine age that would unite standardized industrial methods with a new humanism. Le Corbusier's subsequent work, she suggests, reflected an Americanization, evidenced by the introduction of tension structures and the textured skyscraper conceived as an integrated system with functions articulated. She also defines Le Corbusier's role in the debate over New York City high-rise public housing. Appearing here in print for the first time are color reproductions of the pastel drawings that illustrated Le Corbusier's American lectures.‎

‎Summary The Versus Eporedienses (Verses from Ivrea), written around the year 1080 and attributed to a certain Wido, is a highly fascinating elegiac love poem celebrating worldly pleasures in an age usually associated with contemptus mundi. One of the poem's intriguing features, its extensive use of the Latin classics, especially of Ovid, makes it a precursor of the poetry of the so-called twelfth-century renaissance. In this first book-length study of the poem, the author provides a historical contextualisation, an edition and translation, a verse-by-verse commentary, a detailed analysis of the classical sources and a discussion of its similarities with contemporary and later medieval poetry. ‎Pre-Christian Religions of the North. Research and Reception, Volume II: From c. 1830 to the Present‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xxiii + 635 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:9 b/w, 10 col., 4 tables b/w., 2 Musical Examples, Languages: English, Old Norse. ISBN 9782503568805.‎

‎Summary Over more than a thousand years since pre-Christian religions were actively practised, European - and later contemporary - society has developed a fascination with the beliefs of northern Europe before the arrival of Christianity, which have been the subject of a huge range of popular and scholarly theories, interpretations, and uses. Indeed, the pre-Christian religions of the North have exerted a phenomenal influence on modern culture, appearing in everything from the names of days of the week to Hollywood blockbusters. Scholarly treatments have been hardly less varied. Theories - from the Middles Ages until today - have depicted these pre-Christian religious systems as dangerous illusions, the works of Satan, representatives of a lost proto-Indo-European religious culture, a form of 'natural' religion, and even as a system non-indigenous in origin, derived from cultures outside Europe. The Research and Reception strand of the Pre-Christian Religions of the North project establishes a definitive survey of the current and historical uses and interpretations of pre-Christian mythology and religious material, tracing the many ways in which people both within and outside Scandinavia have understood and been influenced by these religions, from the Christian Middle Ages to contemporary media of all kinds. The previous volume (I) traced the reception down to the early nineteenth century, while the present volume (II) takes up the story from c. 1830 down to the present day and the burgeoning of interest across a diversity of new as well as old media. ‎Summary This book is, sadly, a posthumous publication. It is the author's last work and offers a new approach to the study of Peace in early modern Europe. It explores the creations made by artists, poets, composers, and choreographers for festivals performed at court and in the cities of Europe which were specifically designed to make players and spectators aware of the significance of Peace, and to move them to actions which helped to guarantee its duration. Created in the context of war, these festivals were based on a conception of a world made up of harmony and controlled by an interplay between order and disorder. This view of the universe influenced writers in their opinions of political structures and diplomatic strategies for which festivals played an important role. Politics and spectacle are shown here to be mutually reinforcing, for ballets, intermezzi, masquerades, choral performances, and princely entries, while recognizing the potency of war, allsought to establish concord, and to bring civic unity to countries devastated by conflict. In spectacle, the Quest for Peace is complex, frail, yet rich in invention. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapter I. Concordia discors: Sixteenth-Century Conceptions of the Universe Chapter II. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, 303 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:48 b/w, 9 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503583334.‎

‎Summary European Renaissance Festivals are noted for their extravagance, for their inherited classical culture, and as evidence of how court and civic spectacles could express political, religious, social, and economic aspirations. In this new monograph, the accent is firmly on the violent context of Magnificence: it examines how war affected the minds and practice of both artists and princes, and shows how victims and their suffering were as prominent in festival as were conquerors and their projections of victory. What emerges here is the dark side represented in princely entries where imperial ambitions are built upon civic devastation and where myths elaborate and expose their ambiguous nature and message. Artists and poets collaborated in bringing victory and violence together: Mantegna and Durer in triumphal processions; Frans Floris and Rubens on the canvases they created for triumphal arches, where mythology was put to work to arouse excitement for deeds of heroism and death, while engravers depicted scenes of war and destruction to accommodate contemporary taste.
