‎De Koning Boudewijnstichting geeft een publicatie uit over de 'Kruisdraging', een werk dat Victor Jacobs van Merlen en zijn kinderen aan het Erfgoedfonds schonken, zodat het in het Museum Mayer van den Bergh publiek toegankelijk zal zijn. De Kruisdraging in navolging van Jheronimus Bosch getuigt van het succes van de beeldtaal van Bosch in de zestiende eeuw, maar neemt binnen de grote groep schilderijen die in navolging van Bosch zijn gemaakt een bijzondere positie in vanwege de monumentaliteit, de kwaliteit en de creativiteit van de schildering. Het schilderij bleef voordien steeds in priv bezit en was daarom weinig bekend en al zeer lang niet meer bestudeerd of onderzocht. Het Ergoedfonds maakte het mogelijk dat een kritische studie en onderzoek kon gebeuren. Die opdracht werd toevertrouwd aan Prof. A.M. Koldeweij van de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen en M. Ilsink van het Bosch Research and Conservation Project te 's-Hertogenbosch. Het resultaat daarvan werd in deze mooi ge llustreerde publicatie vastgelegd. Het situeert de Kruisdraging duidelijk in de navolging van Bosch, maakt de bronnen en betekenis ervan duidelijk, en maakt tegelijk komaf met de oude toeschrijving aan Jan Mandijn.‎

‎Summary Anyone familiar with the Modern Icelandic language will know that the country's policy is to avoid borrowing lexemes from other languages, and instead to draw on their own vocabulary. This often results in the formation of a word pair, consisting of a loanword and its respective native equivalent, as the process of borrowing systematically eludes the tight tangles of language policy. But how did this phenomenon develop in the Middle Ages, before a purist ideology was formed? This volume offers a unique analysis of a previously unexplored area of Old Norse linguistics by investigating the way in which loanwords and native synonyms interacted in the Middle Ages. Through a linguistic-philological investigation of texts from all medieval Icelandic prose genres, the book maps out the strategies by which the variation and interplay between loanwords and native words were manifested in medieval Iceland and suggests that it is possible to identify the same dynamics in other languages with a comparable literary tradition. In doing so, new light is shed on language development and usage in the Middle Ages, and the gap between case-study and general linguistic theory is bridged over. ‎The Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneumburied during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, then rediscovered in 1750 contained a large collection of bronze and marble statuary and busts. Before they were published or exhibited, the sculptures were restored so as to appear whole, thereby helping to shape early modern tastes in classical sculpture. This book describes the nature of the ancient sculptures and their impact on the modern public. Their chance discovery affected the interpretation of the statuestheir styles and subjectsover the course of the next 250 years. The ancient sculptures were copied extensively in reproductions of various sizes and patinas. The author traces the popularity of these copies in Europe and America. Also presented in the book is a technical study of the production techniques and materials of the sculptures, as well as of their modern restoration history. Scientific analyses and detailed photographs reveal both how the pieces were cast and pieced together in antiquity and how they were restored in the eighteenth century. Even though this collection has been known for two and a half centuries, this book covers for the first time the eclectic nature of the sculptures, their actual condition, and their quality, pointing in some cases to mass production.‎
