ISBN 9781912554560.‎ ‎Summary The 1,055 drawings catalogued in these four volumes are mainly divided between the Royal Library at Windsor Castle and the Department of Greece and Rome of the British Museum, but are also scattered in other public and private collections across the world. They correspond most closely to Cassiano's definition of the Paper Museum as his attempt to have 'skilled young draughtsmen' draw 'everything good in marbles and bronze which can provide some information about antiquity'. He focused in the first instance on the ancient figurative reliefs which are especially abundant in the city of Rome, carved on marble sarcophagi, tombstones, altars, bases and a wide range of other monuments. The drawings depict both the public reliefs of the city - such as those on the Arch of Constantine or the Column of Marcus Aurelius - and those from the major Roman private collections of the period, including the Aldobrandini, Borghese, Medici, Farnese, Barberini and Giustiniani collections. Cassiano started the project in the 1620s with the intention of publishing the drawings as a series of prints. No printed edition ever came to pass, but the drawings collection expanded with still greater energy in the 1630s, when Pietro Testa and other young artists from the circle of Pietro da Cortona were employed. After Cassiano's death in 1657 the enterprise was carried forward by his younger brother Carlo Antonio, who continued to collect drawings of sarcophagi and reliefs well into the 1680s. Sixteenth century purchases were also made for the collection, including works by Battista Franco and Pirro Ligorio. Four introductory essays explore the context in which the project evolved and discuss the collecting history of the Paper Museum as attested by the mounts and numbering found on many of the drawings. They depict a wide variety of ancient statues of gods and humans, standing, seated or supine, large and small, whole and fragmentary, mainly of marble but also of bronze, as well as statuettes in marble and alabaster, figurines in bronze and terracotta, both Roman and Etruscan, military trophy groups and phallic sculptures. Also represented are herms, a sizeable series of portrait busts and heads, miniature busts in semi-precious stones and figurative appliqu s. Some are wellknown pieces, from the Barberini, Giustiniani, Medici and Pamphilj collections in Rome, but many are unusual and otherwise unrecorded. The drawings were largely commissioned in the 1630s and 1640s from artists such as Pietro Testa and Vincenzo Leonardi, with smaller groups thereafter, the last in the mid-1680s. Villa Muller, een van de mooiste art Deco en modernistische architectuur in Belgie, heeft de naam van de opdrachtgevers, realisatie van Architect Marcel Spittael is verwant met andere realisaties van robert Mallet Stevens, Jozef Hoffmann en ook Michel Polak, 1938 Sint-Genesius-Rode; Monumentale villa in nieuwe zakelijkheid gelegen te midden van een omhaagde tuin op een hoekperceel tussen de Beukenlaan en de Haagdoornlaan in de wijk Middenhut. In 1938 ontworpen door Brussels architect Marcel Spittael in opdracht van A. Muller. Volgens de bouwplannen lag op de benedenverdieping de living met halfronde loggia achteraan links van de inkomhal met 'grand escalier' en vestibule en rechts de eetkamer met aansluitend 'office'. Rechts van de eetkamer waren verschillende dienstvertrekken gegroepeerd, onder meer de keuken en de wasplaats. Ook de diensttrap bevond zich hier. De achtergevel geeft uit op een vijver. Hoofdvolume van twee bouwlagen onder plat dak, met hoger opgetrokken westvleugel van drie bouwlagen, het geheel uitgevoerd in geelbruine baksteen met dudokvoeg. Onregelmatige travee-indeling. Strakke, zakelijke vormgeving met kenmerkende verspringende volumes. Inkompartij geaccentueerd door een halfronde erker op pilotis, op de verdieping voorzien van een venster met gebogen glas en fijne horizontale roedeverdeling. Doorgetrokken lateien in witte natuursteen boven de rechthoekige muuropeningen zorgen voor een horizontaliserend effect. Typerende vlaggenmast aan de oostgevel. Vooruitspringende dubbele garage uit de bouwperiode, voorzien van een bandvenster met fijne roedeverdeling, ten westen aansluitend aan het hoofdvolume. Binnen het patrimonium van de gemeente is dit een zeldzaam, grootschalig en verzorgd uitgewerkt voorbeeld van baksteenarchitectuur uit het interbellum. A careful analysis of documents, fabric, and restoration allows us to reconstruct the original site. It reveals two previously unidentified building stages. The first palace, begun in 1255, adapted an ex-neighborhood consortium, reusing an old tower and three houses. In the 1280s, a second palace arose next to it, thus creating a twin-palace complex for the Podest and Capitano, the highest-ranking public officials. Long misidentified as the 1255 palace, the front wing's lower two stories were actually built in 1291-1308. An unroofed precinct wall enclosed the older structures behind a monumental facade, forming an open-air courtyard used for tribunals and stables. This part became known as the ?old palace? when the large, arcaded courtyard and rear wing were addded in 1316-1322. The "new palace" containing the Magdalen Chapel was designed for the Angevin court in residence, not for the communal administration of justice as generally believed. After a 1332 fire devastated the upper stories, the front wing was covered with two immense roof vaults in 1332-1346. Inside, many old dividing walls survived until the nineteenth century. They were demolished with the prisons during the building's conversion into the present national museum, concocting the two vast exhibition halls. This book illustrates the Bargello's early architecture. Reinterpreting the timeline radically changes our understanding of the palace's construction, function, and urban context during the formation of early modern Florence.
