‎Daniel Colin was born in 1963 and was primarily influenced creatively by the 1980s growing up. The 1980s were a tumultuous period culturally, and were marked by growing global capitalism, global mass media, significant discrepancies in wealth, alongside a distinctive sense of music and fashion, epitomised by electronic pop music and hip hop. Artists growing up during this time were heavily influenced by this cultural atmosphere. The 1980s were a significant decade politically, marked by the African Famine and the end of the Cold War, which was signified by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Neo Geo and The Pictures Generation became leading art movements during the decade, alongside Neo-Expressionism which became well-known in Germany, France and Italy (where it was known as Transavanguardia). Artists such as Anselm Kiefer, J rg Immendorf, Enzo Cucchi, Francesco Clemente and Julian Schnabel were leading artists of the era, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, who established the street art and graffiti movements.‎

Global warming and concerns about sustainability recently have pushed ecological design to the forefront of architectural study and debate. As Peder Anker explains in From Bauhaus to Ecohouse despite claims of novelty debates about environmentally sensitive architecture have been ongoing for nearly a century. By exploring key moments of inspiration between designers and ecologists from the Bauhaus projects of the interwar period to the eco-arks of the 1980s Anker traces the historical intersection of architecture and ecological science and assesses how both remain intertwined philosophically and pragmatically within the still-evolving field of ecological design. The idea that science could improve human life attracted architects and designers who looked to the science of ecology to better their methodologies. Walter Gropius the founder of the Bauhaus school taught that designed form should follow the laws of nature in order to function effectively. With the Bauhaus movement ecology and design merged and laid the foundation of modernist architecture. Anker discusses in detail how the former faculty members of the Bauhaus school�including Laszlo Maholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer�left Nazi Germany in the mid-1930s and engaged with ecologists during their "London period" and in the U.S. A subsequent generation of students and admirers of Bauhaus such as Richard Buckminster Fuller and Ian McHarg picked up their program and�under the general banner of merging art and science in the design process�Bauhaus-minded architects began to think ecologically while some ecologists lent their ideas to design. ‎What is a house? What is dwelling? How can a house be a body? What does ''being modern'' mean in rural Africa? How are local and global worlds intertwined through material culture? This book reflects on the meanings of housing in West Africa by analysing vernacular architectural traditions and the related ideas and worldviews grounding these building traditions. In the West, much attention is paid to the quality of housing in terms of material comfort and durability. However, houses no longer grow organically, and are no longer layered by time, or embedded in a social community and intertwined with the natural environment. The house, and even more the interior of the house, has become an expression of the individuality of the inhabitant (witness the whole marketing of lifestyle, design, interior decoration, cocooning, etcetera). Paradoxically, though, this goes hand in hand with the erosion of the house as a signifier. Houses are becoming almost generic realities, without a memory or a past, the anonymous results of mass-production, or the interchangeable, standardized products of a globalised Ikea and turnkey culture. Many of the important phases of the lifecycles of the inhabitants no longer unfold within the house, but are evacuated to spaces external to it (hospitals, restaurants, hotels, party rooms, funeral homes, banquet halls). In contrast to the poor signifier that the Western house has become, the chapters in this book analyse the rich meanings embedded in the processes of dwelling in rural West African worlds, with a specific emphasis on Ghana and Burkina Faso. At the same time, the authors document the changes that are manifest in the material and social structures of these houses, and show the flexibility and responsiveness of traditional practices of building and dwelling when confronted with the influences of urban modernity. As such, this reflection on local architectural forms also deals with many of the challenges and issues currently facing Africa.‎

At the core of this work lies a new die-study of the coins produced by the strategically and economically important coastal cities of Homolion and Meliboia as well as the lesser-known mints of Eureai, Eurymenai, and Rhizous. Combining this die-study with a close examination of the cities' topographical context in a border region between Thessaly and Macedon and drawing on archaeological data from Magnesia and beyond, the monograph addresses key questions concerning the chronology, denominations, and circulation patterns of the bronze issues minted on eastern Mount Ossa. This analysis not only throws new light on coin production in Late Classical and Hellenistic Magnesia, but also allows a discussion of the possible military and non-military functions of the region's different bronze issues. Placing the coins of Eureai, Eurymenai, Homolion, Meliboia, and Rhizous in their wider context, this monograph furthermore addresses broader issues in the history of Thessalian coinage. In particular, the monograph's regional approach offers an unusual opportunity to examine to what extent Thessaly's Late Classical and Hellenistic civic coins were genuinely local in design, production, and function. Ze doet dat met de rug naar de toekomst, de blik gericht op wat geweest is. Soms staat ze op om plaats te nemen aan de vleugel en een variatie te gaan spelen. Maar de pianostudie lijkt voor de vrouw allereerst een verdovend middel. Langzaam maar zeker, variatie voor variatie, ontvouwt zich het landschap van haar verleden zoals zij dat voor zich ziet. Dat levert een allerminst chronologisch beeld op. Op de voorgrond treedt echter voortdurend een gezin: een vrouw (die zij zelf is), een man, een dochter en een zoon ? in verschillende levensstadia. Momenten van geluk en pijn, van vrolijkheid en razernij, van onbekommerdheid en zorg wisselen elkaar in snel tempo af. Zo is het leven. Maar onder al dat onvermijdelijke existeren resoneert van meet af aan iets; aanvankelijk ternauwernood waarneembaar maar gaandeweg dringt een verontrustende ondertoon zich in toenemende mate aan ons op. Een onstuitbare melodie als een aanzwellend noodlot dat alles overstemt en essentieel is. De toekomst heeft zich in de verste hoek van de kamer teruggetrokken. Buiten gaat het leven zijn onhoudbare gang. In een kleine wereld, los van ruimte en tijd, speelt de moeder een lied voor haar kind. Voor het eerst, voor het laatst.‎
