‎Saul Leiter (b. 1923 in Pittsburgh) has only in recent years received his due as one of the great pioneers of color photography. This can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Leiter saw himself for a long time mainly as a painter. After coming to New York in 1946, he exhibited alongside abstract expressionists like Willem de Kooning before beginning in the late 1940s to take photographs. Like Robert Frank or Helen Levitt, he found his motifs on the streets of New York, but at the same time was visibly interested in abstraction. Edward Steichen was one of the first to discover Leiter's photography, showing it in the 1950s in two important exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Back then color photography was regarded as "low art," fit only for advertising. Leiter accordingly worked primarily as a fashion photographer, for magazines such as Esquire and Harper's Bazaar. Nearly forty years would go by before his extraordinary artistic color photography was rediscovered. This book, published to mark the first major retrospective of Leiter's work anywhere in the world, features for the first time, in addition to his early black and white and color images, his fashion photography, the overpainted nudes, as well as his paintings and sketchbooks.‎

Symbols are projected into dream landscapes of transparent clarity in which different aspects of surrealism are revealed ? from the convulsive forms of Dorothea Tanning, the fetishism of Dali, and the alchemical and magical sources of the Middle Ages, and then returning to close the circle of Freudian symbolism. This painter is not striving after the latest in art fashion, rather she has an iconography which searches for the hidden roots of modern consciousness, and confronts the material world with transcendence. Her thought world is realised with extraordinary perfection and penetration. Her paintings are both original and sophisticated in their dimensional world of which they are both the surface and the core, going beyond introversion and extroversion, and forcing us to guess at unknown possibilities. The absolute values of known painting fade away in the viewer, letting these paintings, undisturbed by convention, pursue their own visual and spiritual level. The compulsive picture language of Brigid Marlin hints at the visual signposts of a world whose deeper meaning slumbers in a kind of presensuality. ‎Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) became one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s, rejecting abstract expressionism in favor of the classical representations of the nude, still life, and landscape. He created collages and assemblages incorporating everyday objects and advertising ephemera in an effort to make images as powerful as the abstract expressionism he admired. He is perhaps best known for his Great American Nude series with their fat forms and intense colors. In the seventies, Wesselmann continued to explore the ideas and media which had preoccupied him during the Sixties. Most significantly, his large Standing Still Life series, composed of free standing shaped canvases, showed small intimate objects on a grand scale. In 1980 Wesselmann, using the pseudonym Slim Stealingworth, wrote an autobiography documenting the evolution of his artistic work. He continued exploring shaped canvases (first exhibited in the 1960s) and began creating his first works in metal. He instigated the development of a laser-cutting application, which would allow him to make a faithful translation of his drawings in cut-out metal. The 1990s and early 2000s saw the artist expanding on these themes, creating abstract three-dimensional images that he described as ?going back to what I had desperately been aiming for in 1959.? He had indeed come full circle. In his final years he returned to the female form in his Sunset Nudes series of oil paintings on canvas, whose bold compositions, abstract imagery, and sanguine moods often recall the odalisques of Henri Matisse.‎

‎Vue d'une propriété des environs de Dourdan, composée d'une jolie maison à la façade rose et au toit d'ardoises, à côté de laquelle se développent des communs plus bas et une bâtisse plus ancienne cantonnée d'une tour circulaire. Au premier plan, trois personnages s'éloignent sur un chemin de terre, un homme coiffé de son chapeau et muni d'un bâton, une femme avec un enfant, la femme porte une panière de linge sur sa tête. Il s'agit du "château" de Mondétour comme l'indique la légende inscrite en dessous de la partie peinte. A l'arrière, sur le carton d'encadrement, une inscription manuscrite presqu'illisible, renseigne sur l'origine du tableau : "aquarelle de Pauline Brière de Mondétour, devenue Mme Etienne Geoffroy de Saint-Hilaire. Donnée par Louis Dupont à Edith d'Andecy en septembre 1926".La personnalité de Pauline Brière de Mondétour est connue à travers celles de son père, de son mari et de son fils aîné. Elle est la fille d'Isidore-Simon Brière de Mondétour (1753-1780). Sa famille possédait le petit fief de Mondétourt sur les paroisses de Roinville et Sermaise en Essonne, à l'est de Dourdan. Avocat de formation, il est nommé receveur général des Économats en 1787. En 1799 il devient maire du IIe arrondissement de Paris. Il est fait chevalier de l'Empire en 1808 et la même année, l'Empereur le nomme membre de la Commission des finances. Devenu veuf très rapidement, il eut cependant trois enfants dont Pauline, qui épousera Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire en 1804.Ce dernier (1772-1844) fut un grand naturaliste. Il est d'abord démonstrateur au Cabinet d'histoire naturelle (1793). Il occupera ensuite la chaire de zoologie au Museum d'histoire Naturelle de Paris et aménagera la ménagerie. Il participa à l'expédition scientifique en Egypte lors de la campagne de Bonaparte. Il est élu membre de lAcadémie des sciences en septembre 1807. La valeur de ses travaux lui permet d'être élu membre de l'Académie des Sciences en septembre 1807, et il en deviendra le Président en 1833. De son mariage avec Pauline, il eut un fils, Isidore, en 1805, puis deux jumelles en 1809. Isidore marcha sur les pas de son père ; membre de l'Académie des Sciences en 1833 (section d'anatomie et de zoologie), il lui succède à la chaire de zoologie au Museum en 1841. Ses recherches sur les anomalies qui surviennent au cours du développement embryonnaire font progresser la tératologie expérimentale. De cette union naîtront cinq enfants (dont une des filles, Louise, épousera le mathématicien Henri Poincaré).‎
