It states on the contrary that the political and economic rise of the bourgeoisie accounts for the decline of Latin in secondary education during the last two centuries. Although Latin kept its dominant position in the curriculums throughout the nineteenth century, its supremacy was increasingly challenged by certain exponents of the bourgeoisie, who demanded school learning to be more markedly connected to the professional world. Jan Spoelder, "The decline of Latin as the academic language at Dutch universities and its consequences for education in Latin" In the eighteenth century, Latin lost its status as the universal scholarly language in countries like France, Germany and Britain. However, the Royal Decree of 1815 provided that Latin remained the exclusive academic language in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. More and more tension arose between maintaining classical educational ideals and the with to use the vernacular. Only when the Act on Higher Education was passed in 1876, this meant in practice the end of the mandatory use of Latin at Dutch universities. This new situation also ended the raison d' tre of the Latin school, the kind of education that had prepared for university entrance in the towns of the Dutch Republic and the later Kingdom. This type of school was reorganised to meet the altered requirements of the modern time under the name of Gymnasium. Young was an army officer in the Bengal civil service. Although some Latinists considered him as the greatest living Latin poet, his Latin verses display imperfections and he rapidly fell into oblivion after his death. But because of his atypical profile, he could serve the cause of Latin as a universal language. Through the figure of Young, this article provides us with an overview of the evolution of living Latin in the late nineteenth century. Marie-France David-de Palacio, "Un epigrammaton liber fin-de-sie cle: les ?latineries? de Jean Richepin" This contribution demonstrates on the basis of Jean Richepin's "Latineries" how a writer can breath new life into his own poetic language by imitating ancient authors. ‎Summary This book collects papers presented at two multi-disciplinary gatherings which sought to examine concepts belonging to the semantic field of religious belief. The collection sets out from the observation that the relevant terms are ambiguous and equivocal, and indeed that this ambiguity persists in the scholarly literature in the humanities. It is therefore important to historicise these terms adequately and to clarify their development and transformation over time. This involves a sustained engagement with key discourses - logic, history of religion, epistemology, political history - of significant intellectual heterogeneity. Platonism fundamentally informs classical and patristic Christian reflections as well as the thought of their medieval heirs. It carries with it a tension between 'opinion' and supra-rational certitude which is exploited by Christian thinkers up to and including scholastic theologians. These thinkers insist above all on the existential dimension of a certitude which seeks to establish a privileged link with the divine. It involves the attempt to harmonise the ritual and social aspects of religious practice with the individual urge towards transcendence, a quest which has been bequeathed to modernity and still largely defines the nature of contemporary Western social engagement with religion. In 2002, architects and fellow students David Van Severen, who worked at Neutelings Riedijk Architects, and Kersten Geers, started working for Stéphane Beel and Xaveer de Geyter, the OFFICE architect firm Kersten Geers, David Van Severen. One of their first designs, OFFICE 2: Entrance was for a notary in Antwerp. In the early days the duo started a collaboration with photographer Bas Princen to turn off the visual style of the office. In 2005, the agency designed OFFICE 15: Border Crossing to mark the architectural competition "Build the Border Wall". As an alternative idea for a border crossing between the United States of America and Mexico, they draw a garden that is walled with white, nine-meter high walls. Inside the walls are palm trees planted in a grid and pavilions for passport control and administration. The design is awarded the first prize. OFFICE Kersten Geers In 2007 David Van Severen designed the Handelsbeurs bridge on the Kouter in Ghent. The bridge runs over the Ketelvaart and connects the terrace of the Handelsbeurs with the Ketelvest. For this design, the office was awarded the Belgian Architecture Prize in 2009 in the Public Space category. For the 2008 Architecture Biennial in Venice, OFFICE designed the Belgian pavilion. With After the Party (1907-2007) the agency brought an ode to the Belgian pavilion that had turned 100 years ago, but had not had a party. Two years later, OFFICE received the Silver Lion in Venice for the most promising young architects. In 2014, the architectural office was declared the winner of an architectural competition for the new building of the Swiss French-speaking broadcaster Radio Télévision Suisse. The new broadcasting building will be located in the city of Lausanne on the campus of the Technical University and Université de Lausanne. OFFICE appears in October 2014 on a shortlist of five teams for the design of the new VRT building. In 2015, an episode of the Reyers 2020 Canvas series will be dedicated to the agency and their design. Ultimately, the Robbrecht & Daem architectural firm wins the competition. In 2016, OFFICE was appointed as the curator of the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk. That year there is an exhibition on the work of OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen from March to May in the Brussels museum BOZAR. The retrospective exhibition Everything Architecture shows models and drawings together with artworks that are related to the style and idea of the office.‎

‎Eye and Art in Ancient Greece examines the art of ancient Greece through reconstructions of how the Greeks saw and understood the products of their own visual culture. Special attention is given to factors contributing to the formation of taste and the emergence and transmission over time of concepts of art and beauty and the means by which they were identified and judged. The approach facilitates encounters with the material in ways that give rise to new insights into how the ancient Greeks experienced their own visual culture and how Greek art may be understood by us today. Christopher L.C.E. Witcombe, a British citizen born in Oxford, studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy, before moving to the United States to undertake undergraduate and graduate studies in art history.
