Gebrocheerd onder geillustreerde kartonomslag, 140 x 210mm., 80pp., uitgebreid geillustreerd in kleur. ISBN 907431158x. De afronding van de karkasrestauratie van het priorshuis, in Waarschoot sinds geruime tijd beter bekend als het "rattenkasteel", was de aanleiding tot de publicatie van de 38ste Kleine Cultuurgids. Met die restauratie wordt een getuigenis van een belangrijke episode in de plaatselijke geschiedenis van de ondergang gered. Het priorshuis is wat er nog rest van een klooster dat in 1444 werd gesticht door de rijke Gentse patricier Simon Utenhove die op rijpere leeftijd tot inkeer kwam en aan de wereldse rijkdom verzaakte. De vestiging in Waarschoot, te midden van bos en heide, en ver van de rumoerige wereld, was erg geschikt voor een klooster volgens de regel van Bernardus. De contemplatieve rust werd al vrij vroeg verstoord door plunderingen en godsdiensttroebelen. De monniken moesten geregeld vluchten naar hun refuge in Gent, waar ze zich in 1660 definitief gingen vestigen. Maar in de archieven van Waarschoot bleven eigendoms- en bevoegdheidsconflicten met de parochiale overheid het plaatje kleuren. Via leven en werk van de opeenvolgende priors krijgt de lezer een vrij goede kijk op het "spirituele en temporele" leven van de priorij, van de 15de tot het eind van de 18de eeuw, toen de gebouwen door de Franse bezetter werden ontruimd. De voornaamste bron over de geschiedenis van de monniken en hun tijdelijk verblijf in Waarschoot wordt ons geleverd door de erudiete prior en historiograaf Judocus Vander Cruyssen met zijn "Historia Chronologica Monasterii Beatae Mariae" uit 1706. Kunsthistoricus Olivier Scheir heeft alle geschreven bronnen voor ons opgespoord en gebald tot een samenhangend verhaal waarin de "petite histoire" en kenschetsende citaten uit de archivalische bronnen niet ontbreken. De bouwgeschiedenis van het priorshuis, en de jammerlijke aftakeling nadat het verlaten achterbleef, vormt voor restauratiearchitect Benoit Delaey de aanloop tot het herwaarderings- en restauratieverhaal van het gebouw. Nu de restauratie een feit is, wordt het uitkijken naar middelen en partners om het beeldbepalende gebouw een nieuwe vleugel, een eigentijdse bestemming en een nieuwe toekomst te garanderen. Nieuw.
