New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Croatian. 173 p., color ills. Traces of Ottoman culture in Croatia.= Tragovi Osmanske kulture u Hrvatskoj. Text by Andelko Vlasic. "One of the aims of this book is to remind both the Croatian and Turkish public of the significance of the Ottoman heritage for the cultural wealth of Croatia, as well as Turkey and the balkans, because the fullness of ouor common heritage would be seriously lacking in scope if it was not for the Ottoman part. Readers of this book will, hopefully, be surprised byb the sheer number of Croatian towns and villages whose historical development included (unfortunately, mostly poorly researched) an Ottoman period, and whose topography includes numerous buildings, monuments and historical remains originating in the mentioned period.".

Trade in Byzantium: Papers from the Third International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 548 p., color and b/w ills. Trade in Byzantium: Papers from the Third International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium. In the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople served not only as an administrative, military, and religious center, but also as one of trade and commerce. The city was selected as the new imperial capital due to its geographical advantages, its vasthinterland, its situation as an ideal vantage point for travel by land and sea, and its safe natural harbors, making it a perfect location fo trade. Considering that medieval Anatolia, and especially Constantinople, was located at the center of a broad trade network and was a center of both production and consumption, trade is rightfully a continuing subject matter of Byzantine studies. In addition, since 2004, the Directorate of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums has carried out archaeological research in Üsküdar, Sirkeci, and Yenikapi, as part of the Marmaray and Metro projects. The excavations have revealed spectacular artifacts and new knowledge on Byzantine trade, ship-building technology, and ships and their cargo. Inlight of harbor excavation results and information accumulated from other ongoing research, it wastheright time to re-evaluatetrade in Byzantium. New findings and knowledge arising from the Yenikapi excavations, in particular, gave reason to revisit issues of trade in Byzantium again. The articles collected in this volume derive from papers presented at the Third International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium on 'Trade in Byzantium' held in Istanbul on 24¿27 June 2013.

Proceedings of the International Symposium on Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa, 31 August - 3 September 2006. This book resulted from the symposium on "Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa" which was held in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, on 31 August-3 September 2006. It was co-organised by IRCICA, Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) and the University of Johannesburg. The symposium was a landmark event, first to be co-organised by the OIC and IRCICA in the region. It aimed, among others, to increase knowledge on the history and heritage of Islam in the OIC Member States and their neighbours in the region, and to promote dialogue amongst Muslim peoples in the region and with peoples of other faiths and cultures. After the opening addresses, the book contains the keynote article by Mahomed Haroon, titled "Southern African Muslim Communities in Context and Scholarship". Then come six articles under the section title Historical Background, five articles under Challenge of Racism and Response in Politics, seven articles under Spiritual Culture and Learning, and seven articles under Miscellany. The papers have been edited and prepared for publication by Mahomed Haroon and Suleman Essop Dangor, specialists of Islamic culture in Africa.

Besibiryerde. Compiling the visual odyssey of our beloved borough of Üsküdar, spanning 500 years from the 1420s up until the 1950s, "The golden city" album aims at presenting the pertinent documents of the historical heritage that Üsküdar possesses. The paintings, etchings, photographs, postcards, and maps incorporated into the book all function to adequately and efficiently reflect and convety a semblance of the likeness of the past times pertaining to the "Eternal city" Üsküdar (Scutari) the our present day, and carry them forward to to posterity. Each page of this book-album ensures the remembrance of an exalted glory and an enduring magnificence of the bygone epochs, and, in a sense, successfully attempts to recreate the memory of a living metropolis. Each visual element and image featuring in the album attests to a diverse and rich accumulation, amassed over hundreds of years, as this impressive and exhilarating pictoral feast defines the magical and enchanted atmosphere of Üsküdar, standing out prominently as a "Dreamland" or the "City of fairy-tales and fantasies. Rethinking art & architecture: A challenging interdisciplinary ground.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 428 p., ills. Rethinking art & architecture: A challenging interdisciplinary ground. The relationship between art and architecture remains a challenging issue today, first and foremost in the domain of architecture, and particularly in art and design schools. To address this issue, the Winter School International Research and Education (WIRE) programme was run in the Gazi University Department of Architecture between 2013 and 2014, with the main theme being "Art and Architecture", and the sub-themes determined as "Architectural Installation" (2013) and "Archi-Stage/Scene" (2014). This book is a product of WIRE, including essays on the main theme of "Art and Architecture", keynotes and the workshop studies conducted during the WIRE programme. The two subthemes, Architectural Installation and Archi-Stage/Scene, spurred new discussions on space, as well as critical assessments of the built environment, and this led the participants to attempt to develop different approaches to promoting their abilities and facing the challenges of modern society by analysing and understanding the changing environment. We hope that the book will serve as a source of reference for both students and academicians alike in architecture, art and design schools. To discover the limits and potentials of architecture, WIRE has for two years presented a unique experience to the participants of the programme, and this book has been prepared to share this experience with its readers.

Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.

"The exhibition of the Museum and Mosque of Yakovali Hasan Pasha can be divided into two major parts. One of them is the restored historical building of the mosque in which we tried to suggest the inner atmosphere of a Turkish mosque by the help of an interiorlike solution. The other part of the exhibition takes places in those basement rooms of the today's County Hospital that join the mosque. The relics of the foundation walls of the former Mawlawi dervish monastery, that came to light during the excavation works, and the partly reconstructed details of the porch of the mosque exhibited here too...".

EDITH OYHON, BENTE ETINGÜ.
Churches in Istanbul.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In English. 148 p., color ills. "Churches in Istanbul is a book about an interesting aspect of a city of a city of many colours and many worlds: Once 'the Rome of the East', Istanbul has housed many religions, and still remains an attraction for who wish to explore the memory of a distant past. The religious sites of the Chiristian peoples who worshipped in the city gives one the opportunity to do just that. Some of these churches are still active, some are in ruins, and some have been turned into mosques - but they all carry the scent of histor within their stones, their domes and arches, their altars, their chapels. Edith Oyhon and Bente Etingu have wandered in the streets of Istanbul searching for traces of time past. This book isa journey into those worlds that they have discoverd: Stories of how some of the churches dating back to Byzantine times were built, the Protestants and others. Churches in Istanbul is a guide that will encourage the reader- wanderer to seek further in a city that hides much more!".
