‎Summary The treatment of long-term agricultural transformation remains a lively topic for historians. Much debate arose when agricultural development patterns were discovered that did without a dominant, production-oriented cereal crop, even when it was accompanied by livestock farming. Joan Thirsk hoped to conclude this debate by putting forward the hypothesis that such "alternative agriculture" was the farmers' way of responding to the difficulties caused by periods of low agricultural prices. This theory stirred up controversy and arguments both for and against. The contributions to this volume take this hypothesis seriously and attempt to assess its validity. ‎Summary La dynastie du Quesnoy est constitu e de J r me le Vieux (B thune, ca 1570-Bruxelles, 1650), arriv Bruxelles en 1594, et de ses deux fils : Fran ois (Bruxelles, 1597-Livourne, 1643) et J r me le Jeune (Bruxelles, 1602-Gand, 1654). N anmoins, seuls la vie et l'?uvre de Fran ois du Quesnoy, qui avait connu Rome une brillante carri re, avaient fait l'objet d' tudes approfondies. La condamnation au b cher de J r me le Jeune en 1654 avait entra n dans son sillage la consid ration que la critique aurait pu porter son ?uvre. Ce dernier avait pourtant lui aussi connu une importante ascension sociale et artistique, en devenant le sculpteur, statuaire et architecte de la cour de L opold Guillaume (1647-1656), alors gouverneur des anciens Pays-Bas. Cet ouvrage tudie sous un angle neuf la biographie et la production de J r me le Vieux et de J r me le Jeune. Les questionnements qui accompagnent cette recherche portent autant sur le dynamisme et le contexte de la sculpture bruxelloise durant la premi re moiti du xviie si cle, que sur l'existence d'une transmission interg n rationnelle au sein de l'atelier.
