‎De Vlaamse schilder en graficus Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941 - 1985) was het om 'het gloeien van kleuren' en 'het wonder van het licht' te doen. Om dat vast te leggen had hij meestal genoeg aan de kamers van zijn eigen huis, waar zacht daglicht over wanden en meubels streek en bloemen, fruit en stoffen gloeiden in het licht of de schaduw. Uit zijn werk spreekt een aanstekelijke liefde en aandacht voor alledaagse situaties en spullen. In dit boek is voor het eerst zijn volledige grafische oeuvre bijeengebracht, dat in de afgelopen jaren voor een groot deel is verworven door het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Van Ruyssevelt, bij leven grafiekdocent aan de Koninklijke Academie in Antwerpen, was een meesterlijke etser. In arceringen en drukinkt wist hij binnenskamerse schemering op te roepen, tegenlicht in een stilleven voor het raam en refl ecties in glas of gelakt hout. De etsen zijn altijd figuratief en suggestief tegelijk: precieze vormen en stofuitdrukking zijn ondergeschikt aan het grote geheel van sfeer en compositie. Hoeveel Van Ruyssevelt ook dicht arceerde, hij liet vooral van alles open.‎

‎Met deze kleine cultuurgids, de 34ste in de reeks, wordt ingegaan op de militaire tactiek in het begin van de 19de eeuw. Na vele jaren revolutionair geweld en Napoleontische veroveringsoorlogen wilde Europa elke expansiepoging vanuit Frankrijk onmogelijk maken. In de lijn van het al oudere barrierestelsel uit 1715 werden plannen uitgedacht om dat stelsel efficienter uit te werken. Het initiatief daartoe werd genomen door de toenmalige geallieerden, met de bekende hertog van Wellington als bezieler. De grondgedachte was de Zuidelijke Nederlanden te versterken met een aantal vestingen die met elkaar in verband zouden staan en zo weerstandlinies zouden vormen. Ze werden gepland langs de Schelde en de Maas en aan de grens met Frankrijk. De uitvoering van het plan stuitte op tal van moeilijkheden en raakte daardoor nooit af. Op het grondgebied van Oost-Vlaanderen werden drie vestingen in de context van deze barriere uitgebouwd: Dendermonde, Oudenaarde en Gent. Nieuw.‎

The first volume, entitled Art and Architecture and edited by Annemarie Weyl Carr, was published in this series in 2014. The volume provides a comprehensive survey of the four-century history of Famagusta under Frankish, Genoese, and Venetian rule down to the Ottoman siege and conquest, supplemented by an account of the image of the medieval and Renaissance city in retrospect.
