Questo libro ripercorre la storia delle molte analogie che, fin dalla fine del diciottesimo secolo, sono state tracciate tra la biologia e le arti applicate (con particolare rilievo all'architettura). Le prime analogie riguardano la classificazione: metodi di classificazione tratti dalla botanica e dalla zoologia sono applicati alla storia dell'architettura. Viene poi sviluppata una analogia anatomica, in cui la struttura ingegneristica delle costruzioni è paragonata allo scheletro animale. Vi è inoltre una analogia ecologica, la quale considera il conformarsi del design di un oggetto al suo scopo funzionale, equivalente all'adattamento di piante ed animali all'ambiente in cui essi vivono. Infine, vi è una analogia 'darwiniana', o evolutiva, che spiega il design di oggetti aventi utilità pratica e di costruzioni, particolarmente nelle società primitive e nella tradizione artigianale, come il risultato del susseguirsi di ripetute repliche (corrispondenti all'eredità), nel corso delle quali si verificherebbero lievi cambiamenti ad ogni stadio (variazioni"), che sarebbero poi sottoposti a prove di collaudo quando l'oggetto viene adoperato ('selezione'). Tra i teorici dell'architettura presi in esame, sono inclusi Durand, Viollet-le-Duc, Semper, Sullivan, Wright, Le Corbusier, Ozenfante Alexander. Una certa attenzione viene anche rivolta alla analogia biologica applicata allo studio della cultura materiale in archeologia e antropologia, come nel lavoro di Pitt-Rivers, Balfour, e di coloro che hanno applicato le teorie evoluzioniste ai vari campi della cultura, come Spencer, Morgane Tylor. Il libro si propone di chiarire alcune questioni che sono attualmente argomento di ampio dibattito nel campo dell'architettura e del design. Cosa è stato sbagliato nel movimento moderno? Qual è il ruolo appropriato della scienza e di un approccio scientifico nei confronti del design? Quali sono i rapporti tra le tecniche ingegneristiche nel design e gli aspetti culturali e simbolici? In breve, ognuno, quale che sia il suo livello di cultura, troverà un interesse nel consultarlo. Anche la presente raccolta, Teorica di arredamento e design, mira a conquistare il maggior numero possibile di lettori, avvertendo tuttavia, a costo di ridurre l´auto-pubblicità, che essa è sì accessibile a tutti, ma in maniera distinta. Infatti, data l´eterogeneità dell´argomento – già in partenza dedicato a due discipline – le diverse tematiche e i molti livelli di approfondimento, fanno sì che il testo, possa essere letto per intero, ma anche consultato per parti. Lo studioso di teoria, di metodologia, di estetica, di storia e di critica d´arte trova i suoi interessi nei saggi pubblicati in precedenti libri e riviste specializzate in senso teorico (segnatamente «Op.cit.»). L´architetto, il designer, l´arredatore, lo studente possono senza danno ignorare completamente questo tipo di saggi e consultare quelli originariamente apparsi su pubblicazioni più professionali, quali «Domus», «Ottagono», «Casa Vogue», ecc. I tecnici appena menzionati più i sociologi, gli economisti, i critici del costume e simili. troveranno interesse per gli articoli apparsi sui giornali, quali «Il Sole-24 Ore», «Il Messaggero», «Il Mattino». Il libro contiene inoltre conferenze, relazioni a convegni, prefazioni, recensioni, che, a seconda dell´argomento, dovrebbero riguardare tutte le categorie suddette. Del resto questa molteplicità di fruizione non dovrebbe meravigliare data la natura stessa della disciplina trattata. Se infatti l´architettura, che riguarda soprattutto un sol genere di produzione, quello dell´edificare, per dirla con Vitruvio, est scientia pluribus disciplinis et variis eruditionibus ornata, a maggior ragione il design, che riguarda ogni tipo di produzione, è una scienza che si compone a sua volta di più discipline e conoscenze.

Originally named "International Revue" form magazine was founded by Jupp Ernst Willem Sandberg Curt Schweicher and Wilhelm Wagenfeld in 1957. It was the world's legendary journal at the forefront of product industrial and communications design. Wilhelm Wagenfeld was a Bauhaus-trained German industrial designer. He studied under the famed Modernist artist László Moholy-Nagy and the German designer Christian Dell at the Bauhaus school. His belief that "to be useful is to be beautiful" is evident in his designs some of which are still in production. Wagenfeld refused to join the Nazi party and as punishment he was sent as a "political pest" to serve on the Eastern Front with the flying corp. He was captured in 1945 and held in a Russian prisoner of war camp until September 1945 when he returned to Weisswasser. Curt Schweicher 1908 - 1988 was a German art historian and museum director. From 1929 to 1933 he studied art history archeology and French literature in Paris Berlin and Bonn but was unable to complete his studies because he was exmatriculated after the Nazis came to power in 1933. When he and his wife the painter Margrit Lauer 1914-2002 gave assistance to opponents of the Nazi regime they faced arrest by the Gestapo and fled to Switzerland in 1940 where he was interned in Geneva. . . Agli inizi del 1960, in un'Italia in piena ripresa economica Adriano Olivetti decide di costruire il Centro di calcolo elettronico, la fabbrica destinata alla produzione delle macchine del futuro - i computer - e sceglie di affidare l'incarico a Le Corbusier. Siamo davanti a un episodio importante dell'architettura moderna: due personalità eccezionali, che per lungo tempo hanno dialogato da lontano tra loro, decidono di sperimentare insieme la progettazione di uno stabilimento industriale d'avanguardia, la nuova fabbrica a "misura d'uomo" capace di ricreare al suo interno "le condizioni di natura". Il progetto, che verrà elaborato dopo l'improvvisa scomparsa di Adriano (27 febbraio 1960), purtroppo non sarà mai realizzato a causa della crisi finanziaria della Società. Il volume si sofferma sulla lettura diacronica del progetto, ricostruendo in modo puntuale, grazie ai numerosi documenti inediti, la genesi del processo ideativo e l'articolazione nel tempo. Inoltre, attraverso il confronto costante con altre opere e scritti dell'architetto svizzero, vengono poi messe in luce idee, soluzioni e forme a partire dalle quali il progetto stesso si è andato via via strutturando. Agli inizi del 1960, in un'Italia in piena ripresa economica Adriano Olivetti decide di costruire il Centro di calcolo elettronico, la fabbrica destinata alla produzione delle macchine del futuro - i computer - e sceglie di affidare l'incarico a Le Corbusier. Siamo davanti a un episodio importante dell'architettura moderna: due personalità eccezionali, che per lungo tempo hanno dialogato da lontano tra loro, decidono di sperimentare insieme la progettazione di uno stabilimento industriale d'avanguardia, la nuova fabbrica a "misura d'uomo" capace di ricreare al suo interno "le condizioni di natura". Il progetto, che verrà elaborato dopo l'improvvisa scomparsa di Adriano (27 febbraio 1960), purtroppo non sarà mai realizzato a causa della crisi finanziaria della Società. Il volume si sofferma sulla lettura diacronica del progetto, ricostruendo in modo puntuale, grazie ai numerosi documenti inediti, la genesi del processo ideativo e l'articolazione nel tempo. Inoltre, attraverso il confronto costante con altre opere e scritti dell'architetto svizzero, vengono poi messe in luce idee, soluzioni e forme a partire dalle quali il progetto stesso si è andato via via strutturando.
