"Piyale Pasha Moque and its Social Complex were construction cluster constructed by Architect Sinan upon the request of Kaptan-i Derya Piyale Pasa in 1573. It was constructed as a social complex consisting of mosque, education center, lodge, mausoleum, special part, ottoman elementary-primary school, market and Ottoman bath; however, only the mosque and mausoleum reached to today. The mosque in the 30,5x19,5 sizes and with rectangular plan is located on two big granite columns and arches and covered with six domes each of which has a diameter for 9 meters. Even if it is considered within Pre-Ottoman Grand Mosque in Anatolia with its six domes, Piyale Pasha Mosque is thought to be an example which was developed and made thinner through the new method of Sinan. One of the very rare tile mihrabs of classical period takes place in the marble minbar mosque. The sole minaret of the mosque which does not comply with the architectural traditions of the period with its domes, arches, entrance portico takes place right on the entrance and it has a single balcony. The mosque was ruined because of the surrounding dense structuring activities, omissions, and natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes in time. All cement-based joints and plasters were rasped and therefore, original hand-drawn works were found out and protected within the scope of the restoration works. Upon the removal of the screed layers on the top cover, the original dome figures were revealed. The work was reached to its original identity and unlicensed constructions in the parcel were demolished and environmental planning was realized at the end of the restoration.".

Istanbul Modern is currently the venue for the second exhibition of the VitrA Contemporary Architecture Series project, which aims to promote contemporary architecture in Turkey. Titled "VitrA Contemporary Architecture Series Presents: Please Do Not Disturb," the show, which runs until April 7, focuses on the concept of holiday as the current theme for the project is "tourism buildings." Istanbul Modern's pop-up space has been divided into five rooms for the works of Burak Arikan, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, Nermin Er, Meriç Kara and Metehan Özcan, making a reference to the atmosphere of holiday residences. The show presents some photographs, a collection of postcards, computer animations, videos and a series of objects, all inviting the visitor to have an experience of a virtual holiday and think about the concepts of tourism and the passage of time. There are also film screenings under the title "Fon Sehirler" (background cities), presenting some contemporary Turkish movies at the Istanbul Modern Cinema within the scope of the exhibition. A book titled "Tourism and Recreation Buildings," about architectural approaches in Turkey after 2000, will also be published for the new theme of the project that is organized by the ceramic company VitrA and Turkish Association of Architects in Private Practice. The book will also focus on other projects devoted to tourism, construction of hotels, social facilities and some other buildings.

Autograph Letter Signed 'Ed G. Paley' to an unnamed sculptor providing a piece for a niche in the Storey Institute Lancaster.
26 February 1890; Lancaster. 12mo bifolium: 2 pp. Text clear and complete. On aged spotted and lightly-creased paper. Relates to the Lancaster landmark the Storey Institute designed by Paley and his partner Hubert James Austin 1841-1915 for Sir Thomas Storey built on the site of the old Mechanics' Institute and opened in 1891. It now houses the Storey Art Gallery. Paley states that his firm 'will put the work in hand for the completion of niche of the Storey Institute & when this is finished in say a month we shall be glad to have the marble group down'. The sculpture 'will have to be taken through the corridor floor leading to the large room & this floor being constructed of iron & concrete we shall be anxious to get on with but cannot do it until the marble group has been got into its place'. If the recipient is 'coming Northwards it will be well to see the building & consider how the group may be best got to its resting place in the Niche'. 26 February 1890; Lancaster. unknown

Bosphorus to Kerempeh from the Russian survey of 1834 with additions and corrections by Commander W. J. L. Wharton., R. N. 1872-80. It's written 'London published according to Act of Parliament at the Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty Jare. 16th 1854. Also shows Killa Bay (Shile Bay) from a survey by Lieut. Comm. W. R. Pristen and the midshipmen of H. M. S. Royal Sovereign, 1920. Topography partly from a Turkish map. Up side of map, engraved a view from sea of entrance of the Bosphorus, Rumili (sic. Rumeli) Lighthouse and environment with several hills. And also shows Amastra (Ancient Amastris) from Russian surveys, 1834-41; Kosku Bay from a surbey by Capt. Spratt R. N. 1854; and Sungul Bay (Zonguldak) from the Heraclee Companys plans to 1915. A rare navigation chart.

Received his Master of Architecture degree in 1964 from the Danish Royal Academy in Copenhagen where he taught architectural design with Professor Jorgen Bo. After returning back to Ankara in 1966, he taught at METU until 1975. Established his private office in 1968 and has been practicing architecture ever since. Served as the Chairman of the Association of Turkish Architects in Private Practice, between 1996 - 1998. Won the National Architectural Award of the Chamber of Turkish Architects twice; first in 1992 with the Bilkent Amfitheatre project, than in 1996 with the Bilkent University Library Annex.

Very Good Turkish Original typewritten letter written in response to questions about some interior decorations and curtains during the construction of a Republican Turkish school, signed 'Professor Egli'. 30x23 cm. In Turkish (Modern). 1 p. Chipped and damaged right side. Otherwise a good paper. Written to 'Zeki Bey' on December 21, 1933. An architectural environment of the Early Republic Period (1923-1950) has an effective language explicitly revealing political and cultural aspects of the Republic. Under such conditions, architects coming from German-speaking countries contributed quite significantly to the establishment of the International Architectural Style of Turkey in the '30s. Throughout the 1930s when the Building of School Political Sciences constituting the subject of the study was constructed, the International Architectural Style conveyed to Turkey by means of architects coming from Germany-speaking countries had a growing impact in the country. Ernst Egli, one of those architects, was one of the pioneers of this "modern" style with his numerous designs, and his educator and manager identity. Egli, son of Johann Jakob Egli, (1840-1918) carried out significant works in the field of educational buildings which he dealt with cautiously and fastidiously and explicitly regarded as a symbol of prestige. Primarily educational buildings together with National Education Ministry Construction Office management, Istanbul Fine Arts Academy Architecture Branch management, and teaching, design, and application of important public buildings in Ankara are among the said studies. (An important building for the representation of modernization project: Swiss architect Ernst Arnold Egli and Ankara Political Sciences School, Leyla Alpagut.).
