Fixes sur des paniers de vannerie ou des boitcs en ecorce battue, les emblemes du Ngoye ou du Bvvete etaient au centre des cultes voues aux ancetres. Dans le bassin de l'lvindo, chez les Mahongoue par exemple, le grand Bwete renvoyait au fondateur du lignage, les figures de plus petite taille a ses successeurs les plus prestigieux. L'identification de tel ancetre etait permise par l'attribution d'un nom precis et par certains details de son image. Les reliquaires suscitaient des pratiques rituelles complexes qui necessitaient offrandes funeraires et sacrifices. Ces ceremonies qui en appelaient a la force ct a la sagesse immortelles des ascendants illustres devaient favoriser toute entreprise de quelque importance: cam-pagnes de chasse, expeditions guerrieres, engagement des activites agraires... L'acces a cet univers des "ance-tres-vivants", garants de la cohesion des families et de la perennite des clans, etait reserve aux homines qui avaient au prealable subi les epreuves physiques et intellectuelles de l'initiation. Aussi etait-ce a ces derniers qu'il revenait de maintenir, par les cultes qu'ils celebraient sur les autels des ancetres, la presence benefique de l'esprit des defunts au sein de la communaute des vivants.
