First edition: rare. COPAC NSTC & OCLC locate copies at BL Cambridge NLS Glasgow Edinburgh Un. and Boston Athenaeum Michigan State. The two Critiques> were by Sydney Smith 1771-1845 the philosopher man of letters amateur architect bon viveur country parson and bitter critic of evangelicals and Methodists. In about 1798 Smith had taken up residence in Edinburgh where he made friends with the literati of the day including Dugald Stewart. It was Sydney Smith who suggested to Jeffrey and Brougham the foundation of the Edinburgh Review> in 1802 of which he supervised the first three numbers and to which he was a frequent contributor. 'Eventually leaving Edinburgh for London he secured the preachership of the Foundling Hospital whilst also giving lectures on moral philosophy at the Royal Institution 1804-1806. These were a great success and established his reputation. He moved in the Whig ambience of Holland House and these connections secured him an absentee living near York. This was a double-edged blessing since a Residence bill was passed in 1808 and Smith was commanded to attend to his parish the first incumbent to do so since the middle of the seventeenth century; he moved to York in 1809.' John Stephens in Dictionary of 19th Century British Philosophers> II p.1039. Styles scorns both the substance and the style of Smith's essays. 'In perusing the critique . I have been not a little amused with the palpable contradictions and absurdities with which it abounds while I have beheld with pity the arts of misrepresentation and the boldness of unblushing falsehood. and I am sorry that I cannot compliment the Reviewer on the score of literary talent.
