Le relevement de l'accouchee. [i.e. Le relèvement de l'accouchée].
In-12, demi-basane fauve à la Bradel, plats de papier marbré, tranches rouges (reliure XIXe), 14 p. Edition originale de "la satire la plus rare de la série de l'Accouchée". En 1839 cette pièce manquait au grand bibliophile Pixérécourt qui avait pourtant réuni plusieurs collections des "Caquets de l'accouchée". Vive satire de la bourgeoisie parisienne de la période, le titre fait référence à la coutume qu'avaient les bourgeoises de se visiter lorsque l'une d'elles était en couches. Récits libres et lestes, historiettes lestes de cocus et coucheries, de mauvais coups, de savoir si une fille "a laissé aller le chat au fromage" (cédé avant le mariage), d'autres "au fessier plus gros que n'eut jamais la haguenée de Gargantua", etc. qui s'achève ainsi: "Sur ce discours, la garde de laquelle a esté parlé cy-dessus, estant ennuyée de tant de sornettes, joint que l'appétit la tenoit autant au gosier comme il luy tient par fois au cul, ne fut honteuse de dire tout haut : Ne vous desplaise, Mesdames, si je vous interromps ; il vaut mieux gouster à bon escient, puisque la collation est preste, que de parler tant d'amour comme vous faictes. Par ma foy, il vaut mieux n'en guère dire et en faire davantage" (p. 14). Le texte est considéré comme une bonne source sur la vie quotidienne et les représentations de la femme dans ce premier quart du XVIIe s. Cf. P. In-12, plein veau havane de l’époque, dos lisse entièrement orné d'un riche décor de compartiments dorés aux petits fers, roulette sur les coupes, tranches rouges, xvi, 341, (2) p., imprimé en gros caractères, vignettes, bandeaux et culs-de-lampe. Rarissime édition liégeoise à la date de l'originale de cet ouvrage que l'auteur consacre entièrement à la gaieté et au bonheur. Au nombre des chapitres sur la gaieté: Les différentes sortes - Contribue beaucoup à la santé - Nécessaire aux gens d'étude - Des jeux – Des rires - Des bons mots – "L'éducation, telle qu'on la donne, nuit beaucoup à la gaieté" – "Il n'y a pas de vraie gaieté dans liberté" - De plaisirs, etc., etc. Reliure abîmée en pied (brûlure). Cette impression liégeoise est très rare. Un unique autre exemplaire est recensé dans le monde (WorldCat): National Libr. of Sweden (Manque à Theux de Montjardin, 'Bibliographie liégeoise'). Très bon état intérieur, très frais, imprimé sur papier fort.

Trimmed quite closely but without loss to image minor creasing from original folds otherwise fairly bright and clean. Caricature by Gillray originally published in May 1806 by H.annah Humphrey this was reproduced by Carl Starcke for the 'London und Paris' magazine which appeared eight times a year in octavo between 1798 and 1815 with each issue consisting of three parts opening with articles from London then Paris and a third satirical part comprising English and French political caricatures See Deuling 'Aesthetics and Politics in the Journal London und Paris 1798-1815' in Oergel Ed 'Re- Writing the Radical - Enlightenment Revolution and Cultural Transfer in 1790s Germany Britain and France' pages 102-118. The caricature shows John Bull having lost his 'William Pitt' oar being swamped by the 'unfathomable sea of taxation' unleashed by the budget of Lord Henry Petty; in this torrent anthropomorphic cormorants greedily fish representing many of the prominent Whig politicians who had previously argued against excessive taxation including Grenville Sidmouth Sheridan Fox and Moira. 24 A-E; 25-50 A-C; 12; 6 2 engraved leaves.An extremely rare and marvellous series of satirical dwarf caricatures in its most complete edition. This famous satirical "Theatre of Dwarves" is a wholly engraved book of caricatures of a wide variety of types of men and women: nobelman intellectual official alchemist doctor soldier pilgrim milkmaid etc. all depicted as grotesque dwarves. Dutchmen Spaniards Turks blacks and jews all feel the barbs of the artist's pen and engraver's burin.The present quarto issue seems to be even rarer than the folio issue which has decorative frames printed from separate plates around each print.At least most of the four Amsterdam editions were published in two issues one in folio with decorative borders and one in 4to or possibly sometimes even 8vo without borders. Muller first knew only parts 1 to 3 3695b but later acquired a copy in the 4to issue with all 4 parts and described its part 4 in his supplement 3695d.The four parts were no doubt printed together probably in the 1720s. We have seen a copy of the folio issue with all four parts on this same paper so the two issues were no doubt published simultaneously. In very good condition. Caricature by Gillray originally published in February 1806 by H.annah Humphrey this was reproduced by Carl Starcke for the 'London und Paris' magazine which appeared eight times a year in octavo between 1798 and 1815 with each issue consisting of three parts opening with articles from London then Paris and a third satirical part comprising English and French political caricatures See Deuling 'Aesthetics and Politics in the Journal London und Paris 1798-1815' in Oergel Ed 'Re- Writing the Radical - Enlightenment Revolution and Cultural Transfer in 1790s Germany Britain and France' pages 102-118. The caricature shows Charles James Fox wearing the red cap of liberty soaring through the air with Sidmouth under his left wing and Grenville under his right with John Bull clinging to his coat-tails. The Chancellors' Hobby or More Taxes for John Bull. Hand colored caricature
London: Thomas Tegg 1819. Very good condition. Caricature depicting the Chancellor riding a money sack on wheels on which are the names of the new taxes New Mall Tax New Tobacco Tax Coffee Tax Tea Tax are written and kicking John Bull in the mouth. Bull exclaims "What the Devil the fellow at- are you going to cram all this Down my Throat Zounds you will choak sic me". The Chancellor replies "Take care John I don't rightly know how to manage my new Hobby it is rather a heavy machine if you don't go out of the road to Bottany Bay or America I can't answer for the consequence."
