‎NAST, THOMAS; TWEED, WILLIAM M, "BOSS"‎

‎Can the Law Reach Him?-The Dwarf and the Giant Thief.‎

‎Thomas Nast Caricature of "Boss" Tweed Nast, Thomas [1840-1902]. [Tweed, William M., "Boss" (1823-1878)]. Can the Law Reach Him?-The Dwarf and the Giant Thief. New York: Harper's Weekly, January 6, 1872. Attractively glazed and matted 15" x 10" woodcut in handsome 24" x 30" wooden frame, small plaque to center of bottom. Light rubbing to frame, light even toning to background of image. An attractive piece. $750. * This is one of Nast's famous editorial cartoons from Harper's Weekly. An infamous figure in New York City history, Tweed exploited his position as a political leader to amass immense wealth and power. He was a symbol of corruption and the target of urban political reformers. One of these was Nast, who chronicled Tweed's activities in a series of cartoons in Harper's Weekly from 1870 to 1873. Some of the greatest editorial cartoons of the nineteenth-century, and important models for later cartoonists, they played a key role in Tweed's downfall.‎

‎PLATH, SYLVIA,‎

‎Portrait.‎

‎. A 19" x 25" portrait by Plath of her high school classmate and friend Arden Tapley, executed in pastels. Undated, but probably from 1950, the year both of them graduated from Wellesley High School. Arden is wearing her hair in the same style as her graduation photograph and may be wearing the same shirt. Plath's mastery of the craft of portraiture is limited: her anatomy is far from perfect, but her intent to capture the essence of her subject is boldly realized not only in the outer depiction of her hairstyle and nondescript clothing, but more importantly in the intensity of the gaze captured by the artist. The portrait would be remarkable if it contained only her eyes, which look askance with a combination of intensity and vulnerability that seems to perfectly embody the artist herself, perhaps as much as her friend. Arden Tapley's daughter recalled that her mother often spoke of her high school friendship with Sylvia, and that both were rather "shy, sensitive girls who naturally gravitated toward each other." She said that when she first saw the image she immediately recognized it as her mother, and in that sense Plath did capture an essence of her young friend. We have never seen such an artwork by Plath offered on the market; her sketch of Ted Hughes that was done seven years later and recently sold for $49,000 was a considerably less "finished" work, albeit one that showed a more mature command of style and representation. All of Plath's significant works have long been institutionalized. Once creased near the lower edge, apparently to display the image without showing the hands; small red stamp lower left corner; else fine. Matted and framed to 23-1/4" x 30". A powerful image of a close friend by the noted writer while she was still a high school student.‎

‎POTTER, J.K.,‎

‎Archive of Original Photographs and Autograph Letter Signed.‎

‎, [c. 1990]. Fifteen original pieces of horror art (including one print and one set of contact sheets, in addition to photographs) by Potter, one of the most renowned contemporary fantasy artists. Potter uses traditional darkroom techniques to generate startling, often erotic, mind-bending, sensual images with both dramatic shock value and a dark sense of foreboding. His art has illustrated works by J.G. Ballard, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Poppy Z. Brite, Lucius Shepard, Ramsey Campbell, Clive Barker, William Gibson, William Burroughs and others. Poppy Z. Brite and Lydia Lunch are among his most frequent models. All of the photographs in this collection are from an unpublished book on his work. Most are 11" x 14", and most are signed by Potter. Together with an autograph letter signed by Potter to the would-be editor of the book, Stanley Wiater. Two pages, in which Potter weighs in on the idea of a dark fantasy children's book and works out the medium for an interview with Wiater. A fine collection from a work that was scuttled by the publisher and will never see light of day. Unique.‎

‎PRICE, BILLY F.‎

‎Adolf Hitler. The Unknown Artist.‎

‎Billy F. Price Publishing Co.:. 1984. Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 260 pages, illustrated in color and b&w. "More books have been written about Aldof Hitler and the Third Reich than perhaps about any other epoch in modern history. Yet despite Hitler's frequent comments that art and architecture dominated his personality, historians have largely ignored his art or dismissed it as an adolescent pasttime. The primary reason may well be that, until now, no comprehensive and authoritiatve catalog of Hitler's art work has been assembled and available. This splendid volume by one of the world's greatest collectors of Hilter's art, the author, accomplishes, in a way, what officials of the Third Reich were unable to do: it brings together a sweeping and impressive collection of Hitler's paintings, drawings, sketches, doodles and daydreasm. First published in a German edition in 1983, this book contains a number of paintings and drawings discovered since." FINE HARDCOVER, FINE- DUST JACKET. Fine/Fine-.‎

‎RACKHAM, ARTHUR‎

‎'Paradise of Children, The'‎

‎A Superb Original Arthur Rackham Watercolor Drawing for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 'A Wonder Book' RACKHAM, Arthur (1867-1939). 'The Paradise of Children.' London: 1922. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing for the tinted line drawing illustrating 'The Paradise of Children' ('Pandora’s Box') in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s A Wonder Book (London: [n.d., 1922]). Signed and dated at lower right. Image size: 15 x 11 inches (381 x 279 mm.). Matted, framed, and glazed. 'Long, long ago, when this old world was in its tender infancy, there was a child, who never had either a father or a mother; and, that he might not be lonely, another child, fatherless and motherless like himself, was sent from a far country, to live with him, and be his playfellow and helpmate. Her name was Pandora. The first thing that Pandora saw, when she entered the cottage where Epimetheus dwelt, was a great box. And almost the first question which she put to him, after crossing the threshold, was this," ‘Epimetheus, what have you in that box?’ ‘My dear little Pandora,’ answered Epimetheus, ‘That is a secret, and you must be kind enough not to ask any questions about it. The box was left here to be kept safely, and I do not myself know what it contains.’ ‘But who gave it to you?’ asked Pandora. ‘And where did it come from?’ ‘That is a secret too,’ replied Epimetheus. ‘How provoking!’ exclaimed Pandora, pouting her lip. ‘I wish the great ugly box were out of the way!’ ‘Oh come, don’t think of it anymore' cried Epimetheus. 'Let us run out of doors, and have some nice play with the other children.’ It is thousands of years since Epimetheus and Pandora were alive; and the world, nowadays, is a very different sort of thing from what it was in their time. Then, everybody was a child. There needed no fathers and mothers to take care of the children; because there was no danger, nor trouble of any kind, and no clothes to be mended, and there was always plenty to eat and drink. Whenever a child wanted his dinner, he found it growing on a tree; and, if he looked at the tree in the morning, he could see the expanding blossom of that night’s supper; or, at eventide, he saw the tender bud of tomorrow’s breakfast. It was a very pleasant life indeed. No labor to be done, no tasks to be studied; nothing but sports and dances, and sweet voices of children talking, or caroling like birds, or gushing out in merry laughter, throughout the livelong day.' This charming watercolor drawing depicts life as it was before Pandora opened the 'great ugly box'" a wonderfully gentle pastoral scene, with a group of three naked children dancing merrily, without a care in the world, with 'the expanding blossoms of that night’s supper' hanging heavily on the tree above their heads and 'the tender bud of tomorrow’s breakfast' growing on the plants in the foreground. 'The moment one opens Hawthorne’s Wonder Book one becomes aware of the rounding and softening of form in Rackham’s work. The modern Pandora of Hawthorne opens her box for the world in 1921, and she is a very living young girl, with breasts just beginning to swell, indicating that Rackham was aware of the undertones of this story which is being retold with every lifetime. In ‘The Paradise of Children’ from the same text the children are drawn in line, but the washes of colour give them a rotundity of form and a very human life. The point which Rackham is making, surely, is that these are real children, a real Pandora, and not some dream from fairy land' (Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, p. 141).‎
