Feodor Chaliapin Sr. George Robey Oscar Asche Miles Mander Sidney Fox dir: Georg Wilhelm Pabst; United Artists. The story of an elderly gentlemen in 16th century Spain who goes mad after reading too much about chivalry claims himself a knight and sets out with a small entourage to revive that age. With songs this version of the famous tale would later be realized as the musical MAN OF LA MANCHA. Three versions were filmed for 3 different languages -- English French and German -- with the famous Russian-born opera singer Feodor Chaliapin playing in all three versions resulting in three somewhat different films. This work is one of the only times Chaliapin was captured on film. He is known to have been the first opera singer to concern himself with a believably-acted presentation of character. This card displays beautifully and has been cleaned and backed. There were some creases/tears in the ""C"" of ""Chaliapin"" which has had a bit of touch-up. An area in the top center has been addressed. An area at the bottom of the sword has also had a bit of touch-up and a tear at the center of Chaliapin's neck extending from the right edge has had a touch-up. An inner tear below the windmill has been addressed. A few minor edge creases have been smoothed out VERY GOOD-FINE. unknown books

Known for her chestnut brown hair and wild ways Edy appears as a blonde in this photo coded ""WT-11"" next to a blow up of Humphrey Bogart. The printed blurb appears on the verso. Joel McCrea Laraine Day Herbert Marshall George Sanders Albert Bassermann Robert Benchley Edmund Gwenn dir: Alfred Hitchcock; United Artists. Academy Award-nominated classic for which Hitchcock beautifully blended suspense action and comedy. There was also a bold political statement made just as the entire world went to war that neutrality will not work when others are bent on war. This film along with Rebecca which would win many of the Oscars that year made a huge impression on America during Hitchcock's first year of Hollywood film making. Gary Cooper and Joan Fontaine were the director's first choices for the leads played by McCrea and Day. This half sheet has a much stronger design than the film's one sheet poster and it is always a frustratingly elusive piece to find. This poster has been cleaned and is in beautifully preserved condition paper-backed with the strong center fold addressed with minor touch-up. Internal creases and minor edge tears have been addressed as well VERY GOOD-FINE. unknown books

Stunning hand color and the most desirable card showing the sisters. Wild girl Rascha swears revenge on her bear taming father's enemy Jorga who has disgraced her honor by cutting off her braids. Of course this leads to hot passionate love making. Jorga kidnaps her she falls in love with him and helps him escape the wrath of her father. Wonderful image of del Río as the hot-blooded gypsy girl Rascha set against early Deco graphics. The color printing and embossing are exquisite throughout fresh and highly detailed.<br /> <br> <br> The third volume begins with two extremely rare images. The first depicts a husband praying for a baby girl while his wife prays for a male child. The following scene depicts a midwife assisting the wife who is bearing a hermaphroditic baby.<br /> <br> <br> There is much to be studied in this book; we have only suggested some of the complex subjects.<br /> <br> <br> There is some debate regarding the artists. WorldCat attributes the images to Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Utagawa Kunisada accession number 1020973371 but the NIJL erotica database Enpon Shiryo database and the Ritsumeikan University ARC database prefer Toyokuni and Kunitora. The author is EnkÅbÅ Tsukinari çŒ¿çŒ´åŠ æœˆæˆ. Collection of 35 Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints<br /> <br /> Utamaro 喜多å·æŒéº¿ Harunobu 鈴木春信 Kiyonaga 鳥居清長 Eishi é³¥æ–‡æ–Žæ „ä¹‹ Choki æ „æ¾é½‹é•·å–œ et al artists<br /> <br /> Edo Period<br /> <br /> A large tied navy blue cloth portfolio 52 x 38cm with 35 ukiyo-e prints ranging from approx 39 x 26cm to approx 29.5 x 21.5cm tipped into framed paper mats - Adachi mats are approx 50.5 x 36cm and Takamizawa mats are approx 48 x 33.5cm. <br /> <br /> Classic ukiyo-e hanga printed by Adachi and Takamizawa after the War: 18 have Adachi labels on the mats; 11 have red Takamizawa hanko Takamizawa-han 高見澤版 on the rear of the prints; the remaining 6 others are without marks but most likely fromTakamizawa. All of the prints have the artists’ names and hanko. The prints were likely not issued as a collection but are being sold as a group.<br /> <br /> The rear of 18 mats have a small printed label with the name and address of the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints アダãƒç‰ˆç”»ç ”究所 in English and Japanese. Above that is a typed label with the name of the artist in Roman script and the title in English with some in Roman script as well. The mats with the Adachi label open to the left Japanese style while the others open to the right Western style. Artists named are Utamaro Kitagawa 喜多å·æŒéº¿ 1753-1806 Harunobu Suzuki Harunobu 鈴木春信 1725-1770 Kiyonaga Torii Kiyonaga 鳥居清長 1752-1815 Eishi ChÅbunsai Eishi é³¥æ–‡æ–Žæ „ä¹‹ 1756-1829 and Choki EishÅsai ChÅki æ „æ¾é½‹é•·å–œ active 1760s-early 1800s who was known for his use of mica in the background of a few of his prints like the one here. The Takamizawa prints feature many of the same artists.<br /> <br /> A small label on the front of the portfolio has details of the contents handwritten in English. A few have areas of fading 1 has a crease on the right edge the mat of 1 is starting otherwise very good condition. Very good impressions some embossed karazuri 空摺 and some with metallic pigment. Lovely evocative prints in striking colors by two of the most respected traditional woodblock printing houses of the day. unknown
