Januar 1900 in Paris; ? 15. Januar 1955 in Woodbury, USA) war ein französischer Maler des Surrealismus. Yves Tanguys Landschaften sind mal luftig leicht, ähneln Wolkenformationen, mal erinnern sie an die Tiefen des Meeresgrunds, mal an die Oberfläche fremder Planeten, nie aber sind sie eindeutig fassbar: Sie sind surreale Landschaften im wahren Sinne des Wortes. Seine verschlüsselten Bildwelten geben bis heute Rätsel der Deutung auf. Tanguy, der 1900 in Paris geboren wurde, war ein anarchischer und gleichzeitig schweigsamer Mensch. Während seiner Zeit auf dem Gymnasium traf er auf Pierre Matisse, der sein zukünftiger Sammler und Freund wurde. Nach einem Besuch einer Ausstellung von Giorgio de Chirico in der Galerie Paul Guillaume im Jahr 1923 fasste er den Entschluss, Maler zu werden. Tanguy war Autodidakt, er begann 1923/24 zu zeichnen und aquarellieren, wobei er damals vom Dadaismus beeinflusst und noch weit von der Pittura metafisica entfernt war. In den frühen Werken Tanguys sind Expressionismus, Kubismus und neue Sachlichkeit als Einflüsse zu spüren. Noch 1925 wandte er sich dem Surrealismus zu. In diesem Jahr heiratete er Jeannette Ducrocq. Tanguy pflegte neben dem Kontakt zu André Breton auch den zu Louis Aragon, André Masson, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí und Max Ernst, in deren Schatten er jedoch blieb. Die Bildsprache, die er Mitte der 1920er Jahre entwickelte, sollte er weitgehend beibehalten. Er schuf auch erotische Zeichnungen, etwa um 1928 acht Illustrationen zu Les Couilles Enragées für den Verleger René Bonnel, Paris. Diese wurden jedoch bei einer Polizei-Razzia beim Drucker Gaston Coquette beschlagnahmt, und der Verleger gab sein Vorhaben auf. Sie wurden erstmals Mitte der 50er Jahre veröffentlicht in dem Werk Maria Comburg, Journal intime d'une provinciale, mit der Verlagsangabe London-Melbourne-Calcutta und Philéas Fogg als Verleger. Tatsächlich verbarg sich dahinter der Pariser Verleger Eric Losfeld. Im Jahr 1938 war er maßgeblich beteiligt an der Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme in der Galerie Beaux-Arts in Paris. Tanguy emigrierte im November 1939, nach dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs, in die USA. Tanguys Bilder waren z. T. Kommentare zu Aufrüstung und Krieg. 1940 heiratete er in zweiter Ehe die amerikanische surrealistische Künstlerin Kay Sage. 1942 nahm er an einer Ausstellung in Peggy Guggenheims Galerie Art of This Century in Manhattan teil. Tanguy starb 1955 in Woodbury, Connecticut, an einem Hirnschlag, den er infolge eines Sturzes erlitten hatte, nachdem sich sein Gesundheitszustand bereits in den Jahren zuvor verschlechtert hatte. Gerda Taro gilt heute als Pionierin der modernen Kriegsfotografie und war doch jahrzehntelang neben ihrem Kollegen und Lebenspartner Robert Capa in Vergessenheit geraten. Die Fotografin, 1910 als Gerta Pohorylle in Stuttgart geboren, war eine engagierte Kämpferin gegen Hitler und Franco: Fast alle ihre Bilder zeigen das Spanien der Revolution und des Bürgerkrieges und den Kampf gegen den Faschismus. Nachdem Taro 1933 für kurze Zeit in Deutschland verhaftet wurde, floh sie ins Exil nach Paris. Dort baute sie sich mit ihrem Gefährten André Friedmann eine Existenz als Fotografin auf. Fortan nannten sich die beiden Gerda Taro und Robert Capa. Als im Sommer 1936 der Spanische Bürgerkrieg ausbrach, fuhr das Fotografenpaar nach Spanien. Taro filmte und fotografierte an fast allen Schauplätzen dieses Krieges. Sie war die erste Kriegsfotografin, die inmitten des Kampfgeschehens fotografierte und die erste, die bei der Kriegsreportage ums Leben kam. Sie wurde nur 26 Jahre alt. Taro schuf einige der dramatischsten und am häufigsten veröffentlichten Bilder des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges (Google Books).‎

‎* Pavel Fyodorovich Tchelitchew (3 October [O.S. 21 September] 1898 ? 31 July 1957) was a Russian-born surrealist painter, set designer and costume designer. Tchelitchew was born to an aristocratic family of landowners and was educated by private tutors. Tchelitchew expressed an early interest in ballet and art.[3] His family was forced to flee Russia after the Russian Revolution in 1917. He studied under Aleksandra Ekster at the Kiev Academy, and after graduation worked designing and building theater sets in Odessa and later Berlin from 1920-1923. Tchelitchew moved to Paris in 1923 and became acquainted with Gertrude Stein and, through her, the Sitwell and Gorer families. His interest in creating multimedia experiences during this period that drew together painting, film, and dance, led to collaborations with ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev (stage designer for Ode by Léonide Massine, 1928) and choreographer George Balanchine. He and Edith Sitwell had a long-standing close friendship and they corresponded frequently. Tchelitchew painted six major portraits of Sitwell. His first U.S. show was of his drawings, along with other artists, at the newly opened Museum of Modern Art in 1930. In 1934, he moved from Paris to New York City with his partner, writer Charles Henri Ford. In New York he continued to work with Balanchine and met his greatest champion and patron, Lincoln Kirstein.[4] From 1940 to 1947, he provided illustrations for the Surrealist magazine View, edited by Ford and writer and film critic Parker Tyler. His most significant work is the painting Hide and Seek, painted in 1940?42, and currently owned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Tchelitchew's early painting was abstract in style, described as Constructivist and Futurist and influenced by his study with Aleksandra Ekster. After emigrating to Paris he became associated with the Neo-romanticism movement. He continuously experimented with new styles, eventually incorporating multiple perspectives and elements of surrealism and fantasy into his painting. As a set and costume designer, he collaborated with Sergei Diaghilev and George Balanchine, among others. Tchelitchew?s works can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Among Tchelitchew's well-known paintings are portraits of Natalia Glasko, Edith Sitwell, and Gertrude Stein and the works Phenomena (1936?1938) and Cache Cache (Hide and Seek, 1940?1942). Tchelitchew designed sets for Ode (Paris, 1928), L'Errante (Paris, 1933), Nobilissima Visione (London, 1938) and Ondine (Paris, 1939).[6] He was known for camouflaging bodies and faces into geometric lines or landscaped forms on artwork. He used abstractionism and symbolism to convey both the outer and inner appearance of the object. Tchelitchew became a United States citizen in 1952, but lived mainly in Italy from 1949. Tchelitchew was openly homosexual. He met the American pianist Allen Tanner in Berlin in the 1920s and the two men became lovers, moving to Paris together to pursue their artistic careers.
