A complete Victorian magic lantern set.
Nuremberg: Ernst Plank c. 1900. Tin lantern 230 x 240 x 115 mm painted black fitted with brass lion's feet brass fittings and tin makers roundel on door "E. P. Made in Germany" brass adjustable glass lens kerosene lantern with wick glass flume; 12 glass colour-illustrated magic lantern slides measuring 235 x 75 mm edged with red protective tape as issued all fitted within slots; housed in the original wooden case 275 x 375 x 150 mm chromolithograph label mounted on top of lid printed instruction label on inside of lid brass hinges covered in black shagreen. A little wear to edges some rubbing of gilt paint around periphery of base and lid minor dampstaining to interior liner yet overall a remarkably well preserved example. A very attractive example of a late 19th century magic lantern in strikingly good condition produced by the renowned Ernst Plank Company one of Europe's foremost manufacturers of magic lanterns and tin toys. The set of 12 delightful glass slides neatly preserved in specially constructed slots in the original storage case include whimsical scenes of anthropomorphic animals street trades Chinese match seller knife grinder fanciful ethnographical images Native Americans with buffalo and coyote on the plain Arabs in the desert three of famous World Exposition buildings children at play the circus and other fanciful scenes. Magic Lantern Slides of Qajar Iran
Collection of 2 Vintage Optical Lantern images of Iran circa 1905. 3 1/4" x 4." The first photo shows a few hundred people attending a funeral with over twenty people standing in the trees. In the foreground musicians hold tubas and flutes. It is rare to find images of this era with musicians and their instruments. The men in the photo are wearing Qajar-era clothing including long tunics with astrakhan hats and most have beards. The second image shows a man being exposed to a public foot whipping as punishment for a crime. The accused is lying on his back with his feet tied up at an angle to a horizontal post. Men surround around him holding canes including one extended out and resting on the accused's feet. The men are all dressed in traditional Qajar-era clothing including trousers waistcoats sardaris and astrakhan hats. These are positives on a glass lantern Gelatin silver bromide. In 1850 William and Frederick Langenheim invented a transparent positive image of a photograph in the form of a glass slide that could be projected onto a wall or screen using a Magic Lantern. Magic lanterns provided one of the most popular forms of entertainment during their heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries. Using an artificial light source and a combination of lenses these devices enlarged small transparency images or miniature models and projected them onto a wall or screen. Small Archive of Magician George Corrigan's Correspondence with other Magicians Circa 1930 Regarding Tricks
Massachusetts 1930. 8 � by 11 inch leatherette binder filled with correspondence. An interesting small archive of material from the semi-professional club magician George Corrigan consisting of letters written by other magicians most concerning the sale and trade of tricks. Corregan was the managing editor of the Sphinx published by Boston Assembly No. 9 and wrote a humorous personal interest column. He also like many magicians of the era traded tricks. According to Magicpedia Corregan "ran a humorous personal-interest column headed as "Dear Uncle Koko Esq." It was years before members realized that the initials of the heading spelled out a clue to the unknown author "D-U-K-E". Corregan contributed his magical ideas to the Sphinx. His Four Ace Trick published in 1922 was a favorite of Ted Annemann. He also marketed "Be a Human Calendar" and "Unkle Koko's Kloryphyll Kard Trick". He authored a column "Spilling the Beans" in The Seven Circles in the 1930s." Some entertaining material is included here particularly the effusive letters of Corregan's colleagues trying to upsell their tricks or engage in small time bartering: "Perhaps you think I am trying to pull the wool over your eyes in our transaction regarding my item Cig-o-Jest." Over 75 unique some in duplicate including correspondence trick want lists two realphoto postcards and unused stationery. We have kept the material as found loosely inserted into a leatherette binder. An interesting window into the life of a small time touring magician and magic writer circa 1930. Generally very good with some normal wear and some mimeographed pages showing normal chipping. unknown

Small Archive of Magician George Corrigan's Correspondence with other Magicians Circa 1930 Regarding Tricks
Massachusetts 1930. 8 ½ by 11 inch leatherette binder filled with correspondence. An interesting small archive of material from the semi-professional club magician George Corrigan consisting of letters written by other magicians most concerning the sale and trade of tricks. Corregan was the managing editor of the Sphinx published by Boston Assembly No. 9 and wrote a humorous personal interest column. He also like many magicians of the era traded tricks. According to Magicpedia Corregan "ran a humorous personal-interest column headed as "Dear Uncle Koko Esq." It was years before members realized that the initials of the heading spelled out a clue to the unknown author "D-U-K-E". Corregan contributed his magical ideas to the Sphinx. His Four Ace Trick published in 1922 was a favorite of Ted Annemann. He also marketed "Be a Human Calendar" and "Unkle Koko's Kloryphyll Kard Trick". He authored a column "Spilling the Beans" in The Seven Circles in the 1930s."<br /> <br /> Some entertaining material is included here particularly the effusive letters of Corregan's colleagues trying to upsell their tricks or engage in small time bartering: "Perhaps you think I am trying to pull the wool over your eyes in our transaction regarding my item Cig-o-Jest." Over 75 unique some in duplicate including correspondence trick want lists two realphoto postcards and unused stationery. We have kept the material as found loosely inserted into a leatherette binder. An interesting window into the life of a small time touring magician and magic writer circa 1930. Generally very good with some normal wear and some mimeographed pages showing normal chipping. unknown books
