PAULINUS OF ST BARTHOLOMEW [also called Johann Philipp Wesdin or Werdin]
India Orientalis Christiana continens fundationes ecclesiarum seriem episcoporum missiones schismata persecutiones reges viros illustres and two other works
Rome: Typis Salomonianis 1794. Three works bound together quarto the first main work with folding map 2 plates and an engraved portrait vignette with two shorter pamphlets 24 & 26 pp.; an attractive copy in contemporary patterned vellum boards spine banded red morocco spine label faded.

Three works by Paulinus including his important India Orientalis Christiana a study of and introduction to the Carmelite missions in India in the late eighteenth century in a particularly attractive contemporary binding. The work is illustrated with two plates and a fine map of India as well as a smaller vignette portrait of Paulinus himself. Paulinus of St Bartholomew 1748-1806 also known as Johann Philipp Werdin or Wesdin was a missionary and orientalist. A member of the Carmelite Order in 1774 he was sent to India Malabar where he was appointed vicar general of his order. In 1789 he was recalled to Rome in order to report on the mission and given the task of preparing books for the use of missionaries.

One of the first Orientalists to note and work on the close relationship between Indian and European languages Paulinus was the author of many learned studies on the east and is best known for having published the first Sanskrit grammar. As an antiquarian who worked from original sources he was fortunate to have the patronage of Cardinal Stefano Borgia 1731-1804; a good Borgia whom he served as private secretary and who financed many of his publications. Both men served long periods on the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide a body preoccupied with exotic languages insofar as they impacted on spreading the christian gospels but also in understanding exotic theologies. In this context the Propaganda Fide was a central recipient of missionary collecting in the field which gave Paulinus exceptional advantages which enabled him to undertake extensive linguistic studies.

After Borgia's death his remarkable library and museum were gradually distributed with the important biblical manuscripts mostly being added to the Vatican libraries after the secular materials had chiefly made their way to the national library of Naples.

The two rare pamphlets bound in here are both concerned with Borgia's museum: Scitismo Sviluppato. del Museo Borgiano Rome c. 1793 and Lettera. del Museo Borgiano Rome same period both written in Italian not Latin and both discussing the Museo Borgiano. Borgia was particularly expert on Coptic relics but here Paulinus discusses early Brahmanic and other Indian manuscripts in his collection.

All of these works are rare although as often the pamphlets are the scarcer. Worldcat lists some 10 copies of the India Orientalis Christiana 2 copies of the Scitismo and only 1 of the Lettera.

. Typis Salomonianis unknown

CELLINIS SALIERA : Die Biographie eines Kunstwerks
Hardcover, 376 pages Text + 56 pages with illustrations in colour, Deutsch , 280 x 240 x 40 mm, Neu, im stabilen Koffer. ISBN 9783902976987.

Pedro de Aguado (1513 or 1538-late 16th or early 17th century)
Historia de Santa Marta y Neuvo Reina de Granada

2 volumes. 867 pages; 826 pages. Octavo 8 3/4" x 6 1/2" bound in quarter blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. Edited by Jeranimo Becker. Second edition.

Pedro de Aguado was a Spanish Franciscan friar who spent around 15 years in the New Kingdom of Granada preaching to the Indians. During this time he collected source material for a history of the region and began a manuscript Recopilacion historial which he completed in Spain between 1576 and 1583 but was unable to publish. The manuscript was used by other historians but was not published until the twentieth century.

De Aguado's date of birth is uncertain. He is believed by Juan Friede to have been baptized in Valdemoro on 26 January 1513 whilst Guillermo Morón argues for 16 February 1538. Arriving in the New World in 1560 or 1561 in Cartagena his movements are uncertain until his arrival in Bogota in 1571 although it is likely he soon left Cartagena to minister to the Muisca people. By around 1564 he was a pastor to the Muisca at Cogua and he was able to build two churches there. Cogua was considered the first Indian town in New Granada where all the Indians were converted to Christianity an achievement of Aguado's recognized by King Philip II. In 1571 de Aguado moved to Bogota and became a "minister provincial" of the local Franciscan Province. In 1575 de Aguado was sent by the Province on a mission to Spain to answer charges that the local monks were greedy and abusive. He was not able to leave Spain to return to Bogota¡ until 1583. During this time he developed a manuscript on the history of the region Recopilacion historial begun during his "idle hours" in Bogota¡ It is likely that Part I on Santa Marta and the New Kingdom of Granada was written in Bogota and Part II on Venezuela and Cartagena in Spain. De Aguado tried unsuccessfully to secure publication over a number of years. A series of bureaucratic hurdles around censorship were complicated by a change in the rules invalidating the royal license to print which de Aguado obtained in 1581 while a second license in 1582 was complicated by a new requirement to have the printed copy checked against the original manuscript signed off by the king's secretary. Financial difficulties also played a role but a definitive reason for publication failing to materialize is not known. A planned Part III appears to have been abandoned possibly in frustration at the difficulties with publication with the witness statements that would have been the source material left in Spain on his return to Bogota in 1583. Dates for de Aguado's death are even less certain than those for his birth; dates vary from 1589 1595 to 1608. After his death his work was used directly and indirectly by other authors notably by Fray Pedro de Simon who appears to have had access to a copy of Part II of the manuscript which de Aguado took with him on his return to Bogota

The manuscript de Aguado left in Spain was obtained in the late eighteenth century by the historian Juan Bautista Munoz; his collection became part of the University of Valencia on his death and was transferred to the Real Academia de la Historia after the university was partly destroyed in 1812 during a French siege of Valencia. There the manuscript was discovered in 1845 by Joaquin Acosta and it was consulted by some historians in the latter part of the nineteenth century. However it was not published until 1906 Part I Historia de Santa Marta y Nuevo Reino de Granada and 1913 Part II Historia de Venezuela.

Condition:

Shelf wear with some rubbing to extremities spine gilt dulled else a very good copy.
Real Academia de la Historia 1916-17 Madrid hardcover

"Jules Pelcoq born in Belgium was a Parisian book illustrator and colleague of Honoré Daumier and contributed to Le Charivari and other French periodicals of the time. He also covered the French side for the Illustrated London News during the Franco-Prussian War. While covering the 1870 siege of Paris Pelcoq dispatched his work by balloon to London. Wood engravings were then made from his sketches once they arrived in England. His work captures the attempt by Parisian troops to break through the surrounding Prussian army and the plight of citizens on the edge of starvation forced to eat animals from the Parisian zoo. Pelcoq often signed his name with pseudonyms such as: Jipé or Pipey

By the 19th century caricature in France had become a highly evolved form of public discourse about famous figures politicians artists and writers etc. and the events of the day. During the 19th and early 20th centuries French periodicals such as La vie Parisienne Le journal amusant Le petit journal pour rire and Le Charivari became well-known for the caricatures they published. Caricaturists many of whom published under pseudonyms themselves became public figures. Paris: A. de Vresse [&] Maison Martinet, 1862 unknown books
