Professor or Dr Josh Toth
Truth and Metafiction: Plasticity and Renewal in American Narrative
Hardback. New. Metafiction has long been associated with the heyday of literary postmodernism—with a certain sense of irresponsibility political apathy or outright nihilism. Yet if as is now widely assumed postmodernism has finally run its course how might we account for the proliferation of metafictional devices in contemporary narrative media Does this persistence undermine the claim that postmodernism has passed or has the function of metafiction somehow changed To answer these questions Josh Toth considers a broad range of recent metafictional texts—bywriters such as George Saunders and Jennifer Egan and directors such as Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino. At the same time he traverses a diffuse theoretical landscape: from the rise of various new materialisms in philosophy and the turn to affect in literary criticism to the seemingly endless efforts to name postmodernism’s ostensible successor. Ultimately Toth argues that much contemporary metafiction moves beyond postmodern skepticism to reassert the possibility of making true claims about real things. Capable of combating a “post-truth†crisis such forms assert or assume a kind of Hegelian plasticity; they actively and persistently confront the trauma of what is infinitely mutable or perpetually other. What is outside or before a given representation is confirmed and endured as that which exceeds the instance of its capture. The truth is thereby renewed; neither denied nor simply assumed it is approached as ethically as possible. Its plasticity is grasped because the grasp the form of its narrative apprehension lets slip. hardcover

Vernaculars in an Age of World Literatures
Paperback / softback. New. This open access book complicates and develops the notion of the vernacular. Understood in the linguistic sense as well as an element of the local the vernacular facilitates the exploration of local and global dynamics. Through exploring the unexamined active role of the local the indigenous and the periphery in international literary exchanges this volume argues that a coherent theorization of the vernacular will enable us to do so. The essays in Vernaculars in an Age of World Literatures present new critical approaches in the debate on world literature which has given priority to cosmopolitan movements global circulation of literatures and metropolitan centers. In nine case studies approaching narratives from the long 20th century from more or less marginal contexts—such as the Francophone Chinese diaspora multilingual regions in Spain West Africa and the Caribbean—the volume offers theoretical and methodological ways of putting the concept of the vernacular in practice and demonstrates how vernaculars operate within different literary critical cultural and political circumstances. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. paperback

Vopli Vidopliassova’s Tantsi
Hardback. New. Rock ‘n’ roll may not have toppled the USSR but it definitely rumbled through its foundations. Unlike the often-saccharine pop music sanctioned by the Soviet state Ukrainian punk musicians of the 1980s Kyiv underground adapted ideologies of rock to roast the absurdities of late Soviet life to articulate new ways of being Ukrainian and to celebrate the cathartic pleasures of collective gatherings organized around musical performances. This book tells the story of Tantsi Dances a 1989 semi-official cassette release by the now-legendary Ukrainian punk band Vopli Vidopliassova known to fans simply as VV pronounced “Ve-Veâ€. Their disruptive musical sounds ironic lyrics use of language and propulsive performances toyed with the distinctions between official and unofficial Soviet culture. VV's Tantsi exemplifies how Soviet musical cultures existed within an ecosystem of contradictions as entrenched state infrastructures collided with emergent youth subcultures on the quicksand of late Soviet life. Today Tantsi continues to invite us to dance while we laugh or cry at the absurdities of everyday life. hardcover

Province of Ontario
Public (Or Separate) School Daily Register for Recording the Attendance of Pupils in Public (or Separate) School, No. 6 in the Township of Montague, Ontario for the Year 1922
Original daily hand-written attendance register for this small rural Ontario public school which was located near Merrickville, Ontario. Three of the pages are loose but present. Includes detailed guidelines re: Religious Instruction as well as Forms of Prayer. Inside front cover is printed a detailed provincial act entitled Act for the Protection of Insectivorous and Other Birds, presumably so teachers could instruct their young charges to not kill certain birds. Also included is a blank "Form of Engagement of a Public School Teacher". Surnames of students attending this school include Richardson, McKibbon, Jones, Martin, McTavish and McRitchie. The teacher was Miss Ruth Bates. This register was examined and signed (twice) by inspector R. Rose. A wonderful piece of history from Montague Township and a rare memento of the way Ontario's public education system used to operate. Book

Notes: Publius Ovidius Naso or Ovid 43 BC – AD 17/18 was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. A contemporary of Virgil and Horace he is often ranked one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature and enjoyed enormous popularity. Augustus sent him into exile where he died. Today he is best known for his Metamorphoses a 15-book continuous mythological narrative written in the meter of epic and for works in elegiac couplets such as Ars Amatoria "The Art of Love" and Fasti. His poetry was much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages and greatly influenced Western art and literature. The Metamorphoses remains one of the most important sources of classical mythology.
The Metamorphoses Ovid's most ambitious work was written in dactylic hexameter about transformations in Greek and Roman mythology set within a loose mytho-historical framework. The characters in this work undergo many different transformations. Within an extent of nearly 12000 verses almost 250 different myths are mentioned; each myth is set outdoors where the mortals are often vulnerable to external influences. The first book describes the formation of the world the ages of man the flood the story of Daphne's rape by Apollo and Io's by Jupiter; the second Phaethon and the love of Jupiter with Callisto and Europa; the third focuses on the mythology of Thebes with the stories of Cadmus Actaeon and Pentheus; the fourth on three pairs of lovers: Pyramus and Thisbe Salmacis and Hermaphroditus and Perseus and Andromeda; the fifth on the song of the Muses which describes the rape of Proserpina; the sixth on the rivalry between gods and mortals beginning with Arachne and ending with Philomela; the seventh on Medea as well as Cephalus and Procris; the eighth on Daedalus' flight the Calydonian boar hunt and the contrast between pious Baucis and Philemon and the wicked Erysichthon; the ninth on Heracles and the incestuous Byblis; the tenth on stories of doomed love such as Orpheus who sings about Hyacinthus as well as Pygmalion Myrrha and Adonis; the eleventh on marriages of Peleus and Thetis and the love of Ceyx and Alcyone; the twelfth moves from myth to history describing the exploits of Achilles the battle of the centaurs and Iphigeneia; the thirteenth discusses the contest over Achilles' arms and Polyphemus; the fourteenth moves to Italy describing the journey of Aeneas Pomona and Vertumnus and Romulus and the final or fifteenth opens with a philosophical lecture by Pythagoras and the deification of Caesar. The end of the poem praises Augustus and expresses Ovid's belief that his poem has earned him immortality.
In analyzing the Metamorphoses scholars have focused on Ovid's organization of his vast body of material. Ovid engages creatively with his predecessors alluding creatively to the full spectrum of classical poetry.

This 1732 first Amsterdam edition is superbly illustrated employing copper plate engravings attributed to the Dutch: Balthasar Bernaerts engraving c.1711–1737; Jacob Folkema 1692–1767; Wouter Jongman engraving c.1712–1744 Joseph Mulder c.1659/60-; Jan Schenk engraving c.1731–1746; Jan Wandelaar 1690–1759 Philip Van Gunst 1685–1732; the Flemish: Martin Bouche c. 1640–1693 Frederic Bouttats c.1610–1675 Peter Paul Bouche c.1646- and the French: Bernard Picart 1673–1733; after the works of the Dutch: Louis Fabritius Dubourg 1693–1775; Godfried Maes 1649-1700; Jan Punt 1711–1779; Jacob De Wit 1695–1754; the French: Charles LeBrun 1619–1690; Sebastien Leclerc 1637–1714; and the Italians: Giulio Romano 1499–1546; and Pietro Testa 1612–1650.
Size: folio 455 x300 mm Illustration: Illustrated with allegorical copper engraved frontispiece by Picart and onehundred twenty-nine 129 copper engravings throughout the text by and after illustrious and notable engravers and artists mostly listed under notes.
