Full leather binding with gilt lettering & decoration to spine gilt ruled borders on both boards all edges gilt marbled endpapers engraved frontispiece and title page 6-1/4" x 4†434 pp. Aucher’s name appears in three different versions on the first leaf: Armenian transliterated Armenian and Latin dated 1847. George Gordon Lord Byron traveled to the Island of St. Lazar where Father Pascal Aucher 1774-1854 taught him Armenian. Together they published Grammar of the English and Armenian Languages in 1819 and contributed to Aucher’s 1821 English Armenian Dictionary. Byron was devoted to the Armenian language writing: “I learned the language of the Armenians in order to understand how and what language the Gods spoke for the Armenian language is the language of the Gods and Armenia is the homeland of the Gods and the Gods come from the Ararat valley.â€A translation of twenty-four prayers one for each hour of the day of St. Nerses the Graceful translated into twenty-four languages. This is the culmination of an effort that first had 6 10 14 and then 16 translations. This effort was likely from many of the Mekhitarist monks at San Lazzaro degli Armeni. The monastery was founded in 1715 by twelve monks; when Byron visited there were 70; today there are 12 monks and five novices. Despite the small population St. Lazzaro has been a major center of Armenian studies for centuries and still maintains the third-largest library of Armenian materials in the world. This polyglot prayer book is notable not just for its place in Armenian history and the spread of Orthodoxy but it is also a typographic success in acquiring the various fonts.</p> In Insula S. The supposed consigner “La Baronne de Vez†was very probably fictitious. This sale consisting mostly of Northern pictures offered 76 lots of paintings and 11 lots of engraved stones. Henry has contributed informative descriptions for most of the pictures. Attributed here to P. de Hooch lot 36 now at the Frick is today credited to Hendrik van der Burgh.<br/> <br/> Nice copy a little foxed. Paris: Gogué & Née de la Rochelle 1785. The rare sale catalogue of the great library of books and early manuscripts many illuminated founded by Henri François d'Aguesseau 1668-1751 Chancellor of France a man of great learning. According to the preface of the catalogue he had acquired the collection of the poet Florent Chrestien 1541-1596 and his son Claude b. 1567. His library passed to his second son Jean Baptiste Paulin d'Aguesseau Marquis de Mannoevre 1701-84 who considerably enlarged it. Between the two generations they created a most remarkable collection. The father and son employed fifteen versions of their coat-of-arms on their bindings. The sale included 5583 lots and was sold over a 57-day period. Payne and the Marquis de Méjanes were major buyers. Very good copy with some minor foxing. Short tear due to a paper flaw to title but with no loss of text. Bookplate of the great French bookseller Georges Heilbrun. As mentioned above this copy lacks - as does the Grolier Club copy - the schedule of sale and index but it does have a final leaf in which the auctioneers promise to deliver the index at no charge by the end of May 1785 to anyone who requests a copy. ❧ Gustave Brunet Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique col. 405-"cette vaste réunion d'ouvrages importants." The scarce catalogue of an auction directed by Bon-Thomas Henry 1766-1836 first a painter then a respected dealer and tasteful collector. The supposed consigner "La Baronne de Vez" was very probably fictitious. This sale consisting mostly of Northern pictures offered 76 lots of paintings and 11 lots of engraved stones. Henry has contributed informative descriptions for most of the pictures. Attributed here to P. de Hooch lot 36 now at the Frick is today credited to Hendrik van der Burgh. Nice copy a little foxed. In 1793 he began to deal in pictures and until 1812 spent part of his time travelling abroad mainly in Italy to increase his knowledge of art. In October 1816 he was appointed Commissaire-expert des Musées Royaux a post he held until his death. Between 1810 and 1830 he assembled an eclectic collection purchasing either privately or at sales among them the posthumous sales 1826 and 1827 of Vivant Denon. His tastes in Italian art ranged from the work of Fra Angelico to that of the 17th-century Bolognese masters.In 1834 Henry offered a large part of his collection to the town of Cherbourg and on 29 July 1835 a museum to house his works was opened on the second floor of the Hôtel de Ville; it was later named the Musée Thomas-Henry.". unknown books

viii 268 pp. 8vo early 19th-cent. marbled boards spine defective. Amsterdam: P. Yver 1785. The extremely rare French edition there was an edition in Dutch the same year of this catalogue of an impressive sale. A contemporary annotator has supplemented it with prices buyers' names and commentary on the artworks almost all dismissive in the margins. Van Slingelandt 1701-82 a great patron of the arts who lived in Dordrecht amassed one of the most notable Dutch painting collections of the 18th century. This heavily annotated volume is the first and most important part of the sale describing 701! paintings along with eight drawings. The second part of drawings and sculptures followed shortly thereafter. Van Slingelandt's collection consisted of Old Masters and contemporary Dutch artists some of whom the collector himself patronized. The present catalogue details the works of Asselijn Bakhuizen Berghem J. Brueghel père et fils Cuyp 38 lots Dou van Dyck Jordaens Metsu Netscher Adrian and Isaac van Ostade Potter Rembrandt Rubens Ruysdael Steen Teniers ter Borch Wouwerman etc. etc. All lots are priced with buyers' names. It is clear the annotator viewed and attended the sale. For almost every item he has provided the name of the buyer. The annotator likely a connoisseur has written generally disparaging comments on the works for sale deriding them as copies or incorrectly attributed: "mauvais" "bizarre" "lourd" "médiocre" "not by Rembrandt." There are additional remarks on condition and provenance which are very interesting. The rare positive observation praises the work of a young artist or salutes a master's finest painting. This sale presided over by Pierre Yver 1712-87 and Abraham Delfos 1731-1820 the preeminent Dutch art dealers of the period was attended by many of their competitors including Pierre Fouquet who frequently purchased on behalf of the famous French expert Jean Baptiste Pierre Lebrun 1748-1813 as corroborated by several annotations in this copy. Lebrun solidified his position as the leading dealer in Netherlandish pictures by purchasing directly from the source and was buying heavily at sales such as these. Other notes indicate there were dealers from Brussels Lyon Antwerp Amsterdam Germany the Hague and Rotterdam. An extremely interesting annotated copy. A very scarce sale catalogue mostly priced; we locate no copy in North America. A later 19th-century pencil inscription in the present copy as well as in two other inscribed catalogues suggests that the contents of this auction belonged to the art collector Hippolyte de Livry 1765-1834 - not to be confused with the author of the same name. Our Hippolyte had previously dispersed a portion of his collection through the expert and art critic Charles Landon in 1814 one sale but in two parts Lugt 8473 & 8515. The present catalogue details 134 lots of paintings by Boilly S. Bourdon Le Brun Guido Reni B. van der Helst Lairesse Largillière Oudry Leprince van Spaendonck D. & A. Teniers Tintoretto J. Vernet Veronese Vouet etc. and various curiosities lots 119-134 including sculptures clocks vases and drawings. Each painting is listed with measurements. In very good condition.
