‎London: Rodwell & Martin 1822. First Edition. Quarto. engraving accompanied by a tissue guard and descriptive text in English and French. Captain Batty was an officer who served with the 1st Grenadier guards and he fought with the 3rd battalion at Quatre Bras. His battalion played an important role at Waterloo and served in the occupation of France. He made sketches and etched the plates in this work. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and his drawing of buildings showed a remarkable understanding of architectural principles. Handsomely bound in maroon straight grained morocco both boards with corners decoratively stamped in gilt within gilt frame raised bands and lettering gilt all other compartments fully gilt decorated all edges gilt light scattered marginal foxing joints strengthened. ‎Beauchamp Tower inventor describes his 'yachting cruises during the past season' in the Gwynfa to Sir Richard Harington. Nineteen-page Autograph Letter Signed to 'Dick' comprising extracts from his diary including a pair of hand-drawn diagrams.‎

‎Warley Mount Brentwood 30 October 1901. 19pp foolscap 8vo. On five bifoliums. Neatly and closely written. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Tower's letter begins: 'My dear Dick I enclose a chart not present which will show you at a glance my yachting cruises during the past season'. The rest of letter consists of extracts from Tower's diary 4 April to 12 September 1901 describing with the care one would expect from an engineer 'one of the best long vacation cruises on record' and ending with a table of 'Distances sailed by me in Gwnfa' from Brightlingsea to Harwich Antwerp 'Abortive attempt from Flushing' Flushing Dover Portsmouth Dieppe Maestrand Copenhagen Kiel Brunsbutell Hamburg Cuxhaven Lowestoft' totalling 2135 miles. Tower adds this to the total steamed in another ship 'Ingani' 'making a grand total for the seaon of 1901 of 3508 miles'. In businesslike fashion Tower notes times position weather and significant incidents. A representative entry reads: 'Tues 13th. Very fine weather Lat 54.40 N Long 6.22 E by obs. At noon Wind dropped at 4.pm. We were amongst a fleet of German steam trawlers. Sent a boat to one of them and got a bucket full of fine Plaice becalmed all night'. See Tower's obituary in Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers vol.162 1905 pt 4 which describes his connection with the sea his 'principal work' being 'the gyroscopic “steady platform†for guns and searchlights … The device was submitted to the Admiralty and after being thoroughly tested was fitted to two gunboats on which it answered very well; but ultimately the Admiralty rejected the apparatus on account of the extra weight involved … Mr. Tower nevertheless proceeded to adapt the platform for passenger-seats on cross-channel steamers'. The recipient Sir Richard Harington 12th Baronet 1861-1931 would not succeed to the baronetcy until the death of his father in 1911. Himself a keen yachtsman he was a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal between 1899 and 1913. From the Harington family papers. ‎Le retour temporaire Bruxelles, dans le cadre d'Europalia Autriche, d'un nombre de pi ces prestigieuses faisant partie du Tr sor de la Toison d'Or, voquera notre pass commun et fera revivre l'histoire m me de notre pays. Qui pourrait ne pas s'en r jouir? Le d placement des ?uvres a t conditionn par les exigences des techniques actuelles de conservation, autant que par le souci des sp cialistes et par le respect des responsables pour la pr servation de ces tr sors artistiques irrempla ables. Certains d'entre eux sont en effet tr s vuln rables, et notamment les ornements liturgiques brod s de fils d'or et de perles. A juste titre sans doute, il a fallu renoncer leur transfert. Une s lection s v re autant que r fl chie s'imposait donc. Nous avons t heureux que le Professeur Herman Fillitz ait accept d'assumer la charge de Commissaire de cette exposition. Sa longue exp rience, comme responsable de la Schatzkammer de Vienne, et sa comp tence en la mati re, lui ont permis de d finir la ligne rigoureusement historique de l'ensemble qui sera pr sent . Ce fut, en ce qui me concerne, une exp rience des plus enrichissantes de pouvoir pr parer cette exposition en collaboration avec lui. L'objectif de cette manifestation n' tait pas de r diter l'importante et tr s compl te exposition tenue Bruges en 1962 (Het Gulden Vlies), dont le catalogue demeure une source d'information de grande valeur. Dans le cadre d'Europalia Autriche, l'on a plut t choisi de constituer un ensemble-noyau, d'un nombre limit de chefs-d'?uvre, soit, exclusivement, ceux ayant une relation directe avec la Toison d'Or, ses souverains, ses festivit s et avec le pr cieux Tr sor de l'Ordre, et qui au surplus sont r v lateurs de l'histoire de l'Ordre et de sa signification autant que de l'origine myst rieuse de son symbole. Le catalogue suit en grandes lignes la structure de l'exposition, compos e de trois grandes sections, selon la conception que le Professeur Fillitz expose dans son introduction. Sur base de ce projet, la t che de Bruxelles consistait faire ressortir dans la pr sentation quel point, d s l'origine, l'Ordre a t li la culture de l' poque lorsqu'en 1430, Philippe le Bon prit la d cision de le cr er. A l'origine, l'intention du duc ne relevait sans doute pas uniquement de son ambition, ni de ses objectifs politiques visant conf rer un rayonnement important sa dynastie. Nous pouvons supposer qu'il se fondait tout autant sur l'int r t raviv de ses contemporains, souverains, savants, amateurs d'art, pour la mythologie et la philosophie grecques, hypoth se confirm e autant par le choix du nom que par l'insigne de l'Ordre (la l gende de Jason). L'origine de l'Ordre a un caract re complexe. L'Eglise d'abord, toute la d fense de la Chr tient (la s rie des croisades caract re militaire et id ologique avait en r alit d j pris fin en 1291 avec la neuvi me croisade) a jou un r le appr ciable, voire primordial dans la vie de l'Ordre en imprimant sa symbolique et ses activit s une orientation essentiellement religieuse, apportant une contrepartie l'int r t renouvel pour la mythologie, la philosophie et la litt rature antiques et la fascination qu'elles exer aient. Les tapisseries command es par les princes de Bourgogne pr sentent fr quemment des motifs se rapportant soit l'exaltation des h ros de l'antiquit , soit celle de la Chevalerie. La pr sence l'exposition de plusieurs admirables enluminures, exem-platives ce propos, se trouve ici parfaitement justifi e. L'esprit du XVe si cle, et plus particuli rement, l'orientation que prend, cette poque, la litt rature telle qu'elle se per oit dans la biblioth que de Bourgogne, se trouvent ainsi mis en vidence, comme ils le m ritent. Cet int r t que Philippe le Bon t moignait pour les incunables est peut- tre sup rieur celui qu'il accorda aux peintres, sculpteurs et musiciens, dont il a laiss pourtant des preuves ind niables. L'inflexion religieuse que l'Eglise r ussit donner la signification de l'Ordre (la toison emprunt e au r cit biblique de G d on) n'a pu le [...]‎
