It is considered to have one of the finest classification systems in traditional East Asian medicine.<br /> <BR> <BR> HÅ Chun 1539/46-1615 was a court physician of the Yangcheon HÅ clan during the reign of King Seonjo 1568-1608 of the Joseon dynasty in Korea. During the Japanese invasion of Korea 1592-98 HÅ faithfully accompanied the king through numerous difficult campaigns. Following the conflict the king commissioned HÅ to write a medical book for his citizens who suffered from post-war famines and epidemics. In 1610 HÅ completed his masterwork which was first published in 1613 an even rarer book.<br /> <BR> <BR> The TongÅ­i pogam is divided into five broad sections: internal medicine four vols. external medicine four vols. miscellaneous diseases 11 vols. herbal remedies three vols. and acupuncture one vol. all preceded by a most useful two-volume Table of Contents. In the first section on internal medicine HÅ describes the interdependence of the liver lung kidney heart and spleen. The section on external medicine explains how the skin muscles blood vessels tendons and bones allow for movement and maintenance of posture. The part on miscellaneous diseases describes the symptoms diagnoses and treatment methods of various diseases. HÅ’s remedies rely on readily found medicinal herbs and plants and he provides impressively detailed instructions on how to extract maintain and consume the herbs. The last section explains acupuncture strategies.<br /> <BR> <BR> The work spread to other East Asian countries like China Japan and Vietnam and is still regarded as one of the classics of Asian medicine. “The Treasured mirror of eastern medicine was in fact one of the very few non-Buddhist works written outside China that achieved a wide circulation within China. It was written by HÅ Chun 1539-1615 as a summation of Korean medical knowledge and was printed in Korea in 1613. Copies were sent directly to China in 1721 and 1728 and a copy reached Japan in 1681. A revised edition was printed in Japan with glosses in 1724 and again in 1799; copies of the 1799 edition were sent to China via Nagasaki in 1811 and 1837. The Treasured mirror of eastern medicine was reprinted in China in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries either from the Korean edition or from one of the Japanese editions with the glosses removed. A printed box-form thick card portfolio with ribbon ties external dimensions 392 × 290 mm containing a thin volume of text 'Croquis de Route et Notes de Voyage' 36 pages in stab-sewn printed wrappers extensively illustrated and a suite of 50 loose colour plates each printed on a numbered and captioned bifolium. Portfolio tanned bowed and slightly marked with a short split to the foot of the upper joint; ribbon ties frayed; wrappers of the text volume a little creased; plates are generally a little offset onto the conjugate leaf and about a quarter of them have a very short split at the foot of the fold; the first plate is discoloured from contact with the binding of the text volume; these are relatively trifling blemishes that do not detract from what essentially an excellent example of a beautiful publication. Number 117 of 500 copies of the trade edition a further 200 'hors-de-commerce' copies were also printed as well as a deluxe edition of 20 copies. This suite of plates is the lavish pictorial record by the official artist of the Expedition Citroën Centre-Asie colloquially known as the Croisière jaune the Yellow Cruise. Financed by André Citroën and using all-terrain tracked caterpillar-tread vehicles from his factories this trans-Asian motorised expedition covered vast distances in 1931 and 1932. The plates from Iacovleff's striking pastels and watercolours encompass portraits and scenes from Kurdistan to Tonkin by way of Persia Afghanistan Kashmir Mongolia and western China. <p>Provenance: Mary Isobel Barr Smith with a contemporary gift inscription in ink to her 'from Mary Isobel Legoe Christmas 1937'. Mary Isobel Molly Barr Smith 1863-1941 was the wife of Tom Elder Barr Smith 1863-1941 pastoralist and financier; he was the eldest son of Robert Barr Smith 1824-1915. Both were great philanthropists; the library at the University of Adelaide is named the Barr Smith Library in their honour. Ihing first published his dictionary privately in 1786 the date of the Preface. We know of only one copy of this edition held at a Chinese library. All other copies in circulation are to the best of our knowledge of the second edition.<br /> <br> <br> In 1708 on the Kangxi emperor’s command a Mirror of the Manchu Language had been published at court. In 1724 Li Yanji published Ch.: Qingwen huishu 清文彙書 Ma.: Manju isabuha bithe Manchu Collected which translated the contents of the Mirror into Chinese and rearranged the entries in Manchu alphabetical order. Li’s book became outdated however when the Qianlong emperor reformed the Manchu lexicon and published a number of new lexicographical works the most important of which was the Mirror of the Manchu Language Expanded and Emended from 1772-73. Our book did to the “expanded and emended†Mirror what Li Yanji had done to Kangxi’s original: rearrange its contents in Manchu alphabetical order. Yet Ihing went further than that. He also culled words from other Manchu books published on imperial command in the preceding years including a book with phrases from pre-conquest Manchu sources and translations of the Confucian classics. The result is that Ihing’s dictionary contains words that were not in Qianlong’s expanded Mirror making it in these cases the more complete lexicographical resource. For example a term such as deyengge nimaha “flying fish†is included in our book but not in Qianlong’s Mirror. In such cases Ihing noted that the words had been announced by the Grand Secretariat on such-and-such a date.<br /> <br> <br> Our copy has slips on the outside cover of the volumes with Manchu syllables written in manuscript. The syllables indicate which word initials are covered in the volume in question facilitating searching the dictionary. There is a colophon by Fa-ke-jing-e æ³•å…‹ç²¾é¡ dated 1802. A nephew of Ihing Fa-ke-jing-e revised the book at his uncle’s request.<br /> <br> <br> Ihing Ch.: Yi-xing 1747-1809 belonged to the Bordered Yellow Manchu Banner and as a descendant of Nurhaci was a member of the imperial clan.
