He was admitted to the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Chunking Central University and then transferred to the Faculty of Law of Dongwu University majoring in International Law. He was an English translator at Ta Kung Pao newspaper and subsequently moved to Hong Kong with the newspaper and worked as a copy editor at Ta Kung Pao and Hsin Wan Pao newspapers. At this time he also took on the job as scenarist-director at the Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd. and Phoenix Film Company in the late 1950s focusing on play writing and in 1955 he began to write swordplay fiction. In the meantime he started the Ming Pao Daily News with Shen Baoxin in 1959 acting as its director. Since 1966 he has expanded his publishing network considerably. The immense popularity of his martial-arts novels continues unabated having sold more than 1 billion copies making him the most popular living Chinese author. He has more than redefined the genre. Critic Simon Elegant has compared the power of the novels to a Chinese Three Musketeers a Patrick O'Brian naval series and George MacDonald's Flashman combined. ; "Kung fu together with Chinese medicine calligraphy painting playing Go and strumming the seven-stringed zither constitute the core of the Chinese cultural essence. All these elements appear in the novels and their placement firmly in the myth-shrouded past combine to produce a kind of 'cultural euphoria' in Chinese readers that cannot be found anywhere else in modern Chinese literature."--John Minford. ; in multicolored pictorial dustjackets with classic watercolor scenes color-coded by novel and stiff paper wrappers ; text in Chinese with many illustrations; Paginations: Bi xue jian 2 v. 4 828 p. : ill. ; 21 cm.; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 3-4 ISBN: 7108006677; 9787108006677 ; LCCN:2007-556539 ; OCLC: 32447936 -- Shen diao xia lu 4 v. 4 1564 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. ; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 9-12 ISBN: 7108006669 set; 9787108006660 set ; LCCN: 2007-556538 ; OCLC: 32447953 -- Xue shan fei hu 4 394 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. ; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 13 ; ISBN: 7108006642; 9787108006646 ; LCCN:2007-558748 ; OCLC: 32752984 -- Fei hu wai zhuan 2 v. 4 726 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. ; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 14-15 ISBN: 7108006650; 9787108006653 ; LCCN:2007-558749 ; OCLC: 32752899 -- Yi tian tu long ji 4 v. 4 1594 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. JM (or GEORGE) WEATHER and SAMUEL BENN J M
c1904 THREE 3 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN FIELD BOOKS OF THE EXTENSIVE DETAILED AND PLANNED WORK REQUIRED TO REBUILD THE TOWN OF ABERDEEN WASHINGTON AFTER IT HAD BURNT TO THE GROUND A YEAR EARLIER
ABERDEEN WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1904. On offer are three 3 original field books most probably written in 1904 and detailing the rebuilding of the city of Aberdeen Washington after a raging fire destroyed the town. On October 16 1903 a raging fire destroyed 140 buildings in the center of Aberdeen Washington. A city constructed primarily of wood including sidewalks Aberdeen had little chance of stopping the fire once it began to spread. Obviously the city needed to rebuild its streets after the fire. Two people one by the name of Weatherwax and the other by the name of Benn seem to have been hired to do the task. Weatherwax is most probably J.M. Weatherwax or George Weatherwax two men who owned a large lumber company in Aberdeen and Benn is most probably Samuel Benn. The three books are labelled P-138 book 44 P-214 book 105 and P-215 book 106. Each book contains an index at the beginning which lays out what streets in the city are written about. For example book P-215 deals with information on old planks new elevations storm sewers street levels and more on the 20 different street including Michigan Ave Jefferson St. Washington St. and more. The books are excellent artifacts of city construction from the early 20th century containing dozens of pages of detailed schematics drawings charts and figures for the city of Aberdeen in the wake of its destruction. There are approximately 450 handwritten pages over the three books. The books each measure 7 ¼ by 4 ¼ inches. All three show sustained use and strong wear. For the most part the structural integrity is still there however the last book P-215 shows the most wear with parts of the book disconnected from the binding. Two of the books shows evidence of taping to the spine and boards. These books are a fascinating look at the intricacies and details of rebuilding a city after its destruction and an intimate part at the history of Aberdeen Washington a place that Kurt Cobain would eventually call home. Background: On October 16 1903 a fire destroys 140 buildings in the center of Aberdeen. Fed by wood-frame structures wooden sidewalks and sawdust fill the fire rages unchecked until some 20 acres have burned. The fire will spur the city leaders to enact a more stringent fire code. On the morning of October 16 1903 a resident of the Arctic Hotel began making breakfast in his room. An accidental fire started and the room was quickly engulfed in flames killing the lone occupant. Within minutes the three-story frame structure was ablaze and the fire spread to adjoining buildings including the fire station and jail.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF ABERDEEN WASHINGTON FIELD BOOKS TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY 1903 ABERDEEN FIRE MILL TOWNS J.M. John C Hamilton [John Church Hamilton] (1792-1882), fifth child of founding father Alexander Hamilton (1755 or 1757-1804) [Georg
Autograph Letter Signed 'John C Hamilton' from John Church Hamilton son of founding father Alexander Hamilton to the poet Col. George Pope Morris regarding disputed points following the sale of his house Undercliff Bull Hill Mt Taurus NYS.
New York; 4 July 1835. 3pp. 4to. 74 lines of text. Originally a bifolium but with the two leaves now separate. Good on aged and lightly-worn paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'George P Morris Esq. Cold Spring.' The reference in the letter to Morris having 'cut down the wood' around his property is ironic given that he is most famous for the poem/song 'Woodman! Spare that Tree!' Hamilton begins by stating that he has seen 'Mr. Robinson' who will see Morris on the subject of buying Morris's house. Hamilton considers Morris's price of $8000 for his house 'very cheap'. 'Indeed if you had not cut down the wood I should be half inclined to buy it myself but that I consider a paramount objection to the property.' He thinks that 'most of the objections contained in the memorandum' Morris sent him on Undercliff 'of a nature that would occur in any New House The work will swell & requires easing repeatedly. As to the Locks I am sure who ever told you they were "common Locks" knows nothing about it as I paid Pye's Partner for them myself - all the fastenings are of the same quality as those of the house I occupy'. He has 'sent for a person competent to judge' who informs him that 'the house is as well built as Contract Houses are generally and that the work is as good if not better than that of the one I am in - The frame was up under my eye - The walls built under my personal inspection and all appeared to be solid and substantial'. He hopes Morris will see that 'Mr Peirson fulfils all his contract. He is necessitous and I wish to pay the small balance due him as soon as you are satisfied'. After a paragraph discussing the roof Hamilton declares: 'I think you have a very cheap property - a beautiful place and a good and commodious house'. He states what he considers the 'correct view' of 'one point': 'when I sold the House - you will admit I sold it as it stood with the benefit of the contracts I was careful to be explicit in telling you there would be some extras in addition to the contract work but expressly said I could not tell the amount - I have expended on it about $6400 Dollars altogether and with the Interest to the 1st of June last I shall be a loser of from 6 to 700 Dollars'. He considers that 'Forty Dollars judiciously applied under you eye will do every thing you want but if you trust to workmen to come and do as they please there is no limit to the cost'. He ends by discussing 'the Stucco of the Columns' and the outside of the house. New York; 4 July 1835. unknown

JOHN GAILBREATH or GALBREATH
1763 Pennsylvania Plantation Rental Agreement Between a Shopkeeper and Millwright Both Enslavers and Land Owners With Significant Primary Source Genealogical Data for 18th-Century Philadelphia and Chester Counties
<p>On offer is a pre-Revolutionary plantation rental agreement between a Philadelphia shopkeeper and a Springfield millwright featuring notes that connect multiple family and business ties in late 18th-century Philadelphia and Chester counties.</p><p>The rental memorandum is the work of Philadelphia-based lawyer Paul Isaac Voto whose office was located at <em>"the corner of Black Horse Alley in Second Street." </em></p><p>The agreement was drafted between Mr. John Gailbreath often spelled Galbreath or Gilbreath in other historical documentation c. 1717–1766 a shopkeeper whose store was located <em>"in Second Street between Market and Chestnut streets" </em>and the prospective renter millwright Richard Hall of Springfield Chester County. Historical documents show that Hall also owned property in the region.</p><p>Dated May 1763 the rental memorandum indicates that John Gailbreath <em>".letts his house and plantation in Springfield… for one year from the date hereof to… Richard Hall paying the rent of twenty seven pounds…"</em></p><p>The agreement lays out several rules of tenancy including the following examples:</p><ul><li><p><em>"The Tenant is to have Liberty to reap his Corn and Thrash it in the Barn after the time is over leaving the Thaw and Chatt…"</em></p></li><li><p><em>".the Tenant agrees not to take any Hay Straw or Dung off the Premises…"</em></p></li><li><p><em>".the Tenant agrees to… keep the House… and Premises in repair as good as now… shall not keep more fires in the House but only one in the kitchen and one in another room and… not to cut any timber or wood But in the Back Field joining to Crosiers Croziers Plantation…"</em></p></li></ul><p>A caveat on the verso of the lease agreement states that <em>".If John McCoy do not think it proper to rent the place it shall be lett to James Cochran John Cairnes son in law at 26 pounds…" </em>According to historical news documents Galbreath was traveling in 1763 and appears to have entrusted a Chester County contact with the final decision on the rental in his absence.</p><p>The document is signed by Hall but not Galbreath. Its delivery was witnessed by Paul Isaac Voto and Elyha Taylor and the original seal is present.</p><p>This document provides not only insight into property rights legal agreements and plantation rentals in pre-Revolutionary Pennsylvania but it also offers genealogical data to support research on the still-incomplete history of early Pennsylvania families. These include the Cairnes Voto Hall Cochran and Crozier or Crosier families among others.</p><p>While some 18th-century newspaper data exists digitally to assist with ongoing research these being the sources used to find the location of the subjects' businesses this document remains an invaluable primary source for those interested in 18th-century life movement and genealogical links.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Significant age toning folding and micro-tears with significant tearing in one corner. The document is written in ink with a clear legible hand and remains in good condition for its age. Overall: Fair to Good.</p>
