MAWLANA KHALID AL-BAGDADI, (1779-1827).
Tercüme-i mektûbât-i hazret-i Mevlânâ Hâlid kuddise sirrehu. Copied and translated by Es-Seyyid Alî Tâlib en-Naksibendî el-Hâlidî.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original marbled papers. Papers toned, slightly wear on spine and extremities and scattered ink on several words. Otherwise a good copy. 16mo. (15 x 11 cm). In Ottoman script. [18], [2] p. He was an Iraqi Kurdish Sufi, by the name of Shaykh Diya al-Din Khalid al-Shahrazuri, the founder of a branch of the Naqshbandi Sufi order -called Khalidi after him- that has had a profound impact not only on his native Kurdish lands but also on many other regions of the western Islamic world. Mawlana Khalid acquired the nesba Baghdadi through his frequent stays in Baghdad, for it was in the town of Karadag (Qaradagh) in the Shahrizur region, about 5 miles from Sulaymaniyah, that he was born in 1779. His father was a Qadiri Sufi who was popularly known as Pir Mika'il Shesh-angosht, and his mother also came from a celebrated Sufi family in Kurdistan. He was an influential Ottoman mystic, who is believed by his followers to have been capable of time travel (Tayyi Zaman). He was born in the year 1779 in the village of Karadag, near the city of Sulaymaniyyah, in what is now Iraq. He was raised and trained in Sulaymaniyyah, where there were many schools and many mosques and which was considered the primary educational city of his time. His grandfather was Par Mika'il Chis Anchit, which means Mika'il the Saint of the six fingers. His title is `Uthmani because he is a descendant of Sayyidina `Uthman ibn `Affan, the third caliph of Islam. He studied the Qur'an and its explanation and fiqh according to the Shafi`i school. He was famous in poetry. When he was fifteen years of age he took asceticism as his creed, hunger as his horse, wakefulness as his means, seclusion as his friend, and energy as his light.Young Khalid studied with the two great scholars of his time, Shaykh `Abdul Karam al-Barzinji and Shaykh `Abdur Rahim al-Barzinji, and he read with Mullah Muhammad `Ali. He studied the sciences of mathematics, philosophy, and logic as well as the principles of jurisprudence. He studied the works of Ibn Hajar, as-Suyuti, and al-Haythami. He memorized the commentary on Qur'an by Baydawi. He was able to find solutions for even the most difficult questions in jurisprudence. He memorized the Qur'an according to the fourteen different ways of recitation, and became very famous everywhere for this. For many years Mawlana Khalid's interests were focused exclusively on the formal traditions of Islamic learning, and his later, somewhat abrupt, turning to Sufism is highly reminiscent of the patterns in many a classic Sufi biography. He began his studies in Qaradagh, with Qur'an memorization, Shafi fiqh, and elementary logic. He then traveled to other centers of religious study in Kurdistan, concentrating on logic and kalam. Next he came to Baghdad, where he astounded the established ulema with his learning and bested them in debates on many topics. Such was his mastery of the religious sciences that the governor of Baban proposed him a post as modarres, but he modestly refused. However, when Abd al-Karim Barzanki died of the plague in 1799, Mawlana Khalid assumed the responsibility for the madrasa in Sulaymaniyah he had founded. He remained there for about seven years, distinguished as yet only by his great learning and a high degree of asceticism that caused him to shun the company of secular authority. He reached Delhi in about a year (1809). His journey took him through Rey, Tehran, and other provinces of Iran. He then traveled to the city of Herat in Afghanistan, followed by Kandahar, Kabul, and Peshawar... (Source: Wikipedia). This manuscript and risala includes short examples of his 'letters' to prophet, Ottoman rulers, Sheikh Mahmud Sahib, Abdullah Pasha etc. Proper nouns in this booklet are written in red ink: Fazlullah, Hâlid Naksibendî Mujaddidi Osmani, Abdullah, Akmaladdin, Mahmud, Jacob, Gazali, Sahhab, Suhreverdi, Muhammad Mustafa, Celâl, Suyuti, etc. Hegira. 1286 = Gregorian: 1870.

Maynard, R [Richard or Hannah Maynard]
Jack . Going Up the Mt. Back of Big . Stereoscopic View
Douglas & Johnson St Victoria BC: R. Maynard Photographic Artist c1880. Undetermined. very good. Two 8 X 8 CM photographs affixed to 8.75 X 17.5 CM yellowish studio card with rounded corners. The sides of the front and the back of the card contain the photographers information. Slight wear to edges and a little soiling to card. Nice image with clear detailing part of the image is a little out of focus. Slight fading and only a little soiling. The side edges of the card curl upwards slightly. Pencil notation of title on rear on which some words are illegible as shown in title very good From the series 'Views of British Columbia and Vancouver Island for sale'. Richard and Hannah Maynard moved from Cornwall England to Canada in 1852. Richard had been an apprentice boot maker in England and upon arrival in Bowmanville he again set up a shop to do his trade. In 1858-59 and 1862 Richard left his family to prospect gold. During this time Hannah began studying photography. In 1862 the family moved to Victoria. After the move Richard went up the Stikine Rover placer mining while Hannah and the family remained in Victoria. It is believed that it is during this time that Hannah first opened 'Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery'. Richard returned in 1863 to find her successfully entrenched in the business. Hannah taught Richard the photography skills she had learned. As it was somewhat usual for a woman to be a professional photographer during that time there is often confusion as to who actually took some of the photographs his name often being attributed to her work and vice versa. Richard pursued his photographic interest in the wilderness as well as opening a new boot shop in Victoria it was common at the time to be a professional photographer on the side of running another business. Hannah's main interest laid in the studio and the experimental possibilities of the camera. As Richard limited his photographs to the outdoors it is easy to tell the studio portraits are Hannah's. Richard took every opportunity to work outdoors; however sometimes Hannah went on his trips with him and also took photographs. Because of this overlap between the couples photographic subject matter in relation to landscapes it is difficult to ascertain who is responsible for the creation of many of these images. 1880 R. Maynard Photographic Artist unknown

McDonnell Alexander 1857 1945 or MacDonnell
Game Book. A. McDonnell.
1880-1917. Full Morocco. Very Good. Oblong 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content with log entries more or less statistical on all the versos and pictures and/or original drawings mostly mounted on 58 rectos with some additional loose material. 129 numbered leaves in all. Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album with some emphasis on sports including also fishing foxhunting and sailing but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa with photos of native tribesmen ostriches a hut Cecil Rhodes house etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored pencil pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes these sometimes done directly onto the page. Most charming are the comical illustrations of anthropomorphic foxes. Sepia photos are of the country estates their stately homes and rural settings of the hunts as well as the people involved -- the hosts and guests during these country weekends. Many but by no means all of the photos have captions helpfully identifying the participants or the locations. And the log proper provides the names of those participating in the shooting and often what would now be regarded as obscenely large kills. Among the many aristocrats and wealthy in the photographs and/or logs are Lady Randolph Churchill Jennie Churchill Arthur Balfour Lady Minto Mary the famous 4th Countess Henry Lascelles the 5th Earl of Harewood the 5th Earl of Carnavon of King Tut fame as well as the owner of the castle used in Downton Abbey Baron Rothschild Lord de Grey Lord Ashburton Prince Murat the Duke of Buccleuch Prince Duleep de Singh Lord Rosebery and on and on. Country homes include Longleat Greystoke Castle the Hirsel Highcliffe Castle etc. Alexander McDonnell was a son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and a clerk in the House of Lords. Obviously he was very well connected and surely very popular among the upper echelons of English society back then. And we would note that many of the most illustriously titled have frequent entries here; what we have here is a window into a cohesive social network it is our sense. Condition: morocco binding has moderate to heavy wear along edges some scuffs on the boards and spine. The leaves can have a waviness the result of the interaction of the mounted material upon the leaves. A few photos are loose. There is a little bit of a scrappy quality to the book as befitting a log book that was partially turned into something much more and this quality is part of its charm as well.

books

McGuffin, Nancy J.
Spectrum - Dye Plants of Ontario
309 pages including index and bibliography. Presented by the dyers of Ontario to those who share their appreciation of the plant world and join in their commitment to its conservation. Compiled from classic and contemporary books on plant dyeing, it is a pictorial catalogue of more than three hundred dye plants which grow or can be cultivated in the province or in regions with similar climates. The first section explains the dye project and its structures, together with material on plant gathering, plant identification and the plants themselves. The second section presents useful information on preparing the plants and fibres for the dyeing process. The experienced dyer will find unfamiliar plant sources for the dye pot; the inexperienced dyer will also find a review of mordanting and dyeing procedures. Represents one element of a fibre exhibition entitled Spectrum '86 - Natural Dyes, Natural Fibres", organized by the Burr House Spinners and Weavers Guild of Richimond Hill, Ontario. The exhibition and this catalogue arose in response to a call for special fibre events to celebrate the first biennial meeting of the Handweavers Guild of America to be held outside the United States, in Toronto in July, 1986. This catalogue represents the culmination of two years of research, experimentation and documentation - a cooperative effort on the parts of guilds and individuals, dyers and artists, from all parts of Ontario. Clean and unmarked with light wear. Nice copy. Book
