Germany the artist before 1835. Single leaf 8.9 x 7.1 cm with four small detailed drawings of beetles mounted on a larger sheet 17.5 x 11.7 cm. Preserved in a larger modern cardboard frame 37.4 x 25.6 cm. = A beautiful scientifically accurate illustration of four beetles. Included are a cardinal beetle Pyrochroa coccinea a carrion beetle Dendroxena sp. a rhinoceros beetle Oryctes female and another smaller beetle which we leave to the experienced coleopterists to identify. On the verso the following genera are written in an old hand: Pyrochroa Buprestis Scarabeus and Sylpha. Signed on the larger sheet in an old hand Jac. Sturm del. i.e. the German naturalist engraver and publisher Jakob or Jacob Sturm 1771-1841. Sturm illustrated many zoological botanical and entomological works e.g. Abbildungen zu Karl Illiger's Übersetzung von Oliviers Entomologie and Deutschlands Fauna in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen. However on the sheet verso itself inscribed in a different old hand viz. J. A. Boerner i.e. the German painter etcher lithographer auctioneer print collector and dealer Johann Andreas Boerner 1785-1862. It is quite possible that this is actually Sturm's work and that Boerner merely added his name as an owner. Boerner did paint animals however no other entomological drawings are known from his hand. On stylistical grounds we rather attribute these drawings to Sturm. Moreover they were found in a map with drawings and print proofs that are certainly from the latter. Some very light foxing otherwise an excellent clean item with the colouring accurate and bright. unknown

Evidently Sturtevant was outlawed and lost his Patent which was taken by Rovinson. Hardcover full beige cloth red cover titling. Worn yellowed and stained foxing and spots in text waterstain on lower corner affecting several pages. Pagination: xx 40 iii 30 ii 119 including a four page listing of subscibers and publisher's note explaining the reprinting and giving a few biographical details on Dudley by one John Bagnall. There is also a folding genealogical chart for the Dudleys and a sort of a map. Not a lot of practical information but interesting historically. Third Edition. Cloth. Fair/No Jacket. 6¾" by 8½". T. 24 color-printed woodcut illus. of which six are double-page & 18 are full-page. 20 folding leaves. Large 8vo orig. wrappers wrappers somewhat soiled orig. block-printed title label on upper cover new stitching. Osaka or Kyoto: very likely issued privately Preface dated 1808. First edition posthumously published of this extremely rare work by Buzen Sumie 1734-1806 edited by his son Aizan. WorldCat locates no copy of our edition; there was a later edition issued in 1826 with rather different images and color palette. The Union Catalogue of Early Japanese Books does not record a copy. Small tray or pot landscapes - known in the Edo period as senkeiban - have their origins in 10th century China. The "trays" in Chinese zhan jing pan or penjing were made out of copper or pottery. They were filled with soil rocks pebbles sand plants and miniature trees forming elaborately conceived miniature garden landscapes. The landscapes are clearly Chinese in style with mountains and pagodas surrounded by the sea or rivers represented by pebbles or sand. Many of the created landscapes include miniature houses temples gates stairways etc. The descriptive text for many of the images discusses the unity and philosophy involved in the creation and depiction of these miniature landscapes. The extensive explanatory text at the end describes in very great detail how to create the landscapes materials used aesthetic considerations how to care for the plants and trees etc. Aizan Sumie has provided a most interesting two-page "Afterword" in which he describes the genesis of this book. Buzen Sumie a bonkei and bonsai artist in the Chinese style created many senkeiban and the images in this work are a representative selection of his creations. The selection was made by the publisher Tadataka Katsu who also wrote a highly complimentary preface. Sumie's teacher was Settei Tsukioka. Very good copy. One image has some soiling. Original plum cloth gilt spine very good spine a little faded owner's name and stamp on flyleaf light soil to outer pages. 432 pp. Rare in commerce fairly well represented in institutions. The author 1802-1885 was a Methodist and ardent abolitionist and anti-slavery polemicist who also dabbled in mesmerism phrenology and spiritualism some of that is the subject of this book and occult phenomena but was critical of mesmerism and its claims as well as phrenology etc. earning the wrath of many of the pseudo-scientists of his time. He was however interested in the place of trances and hypnotism in American revivalist theology and coined a term "pathetism" to describe the possible beneficial effects of the trance state in revival meetings and prayer groups. An interesting descendant of 19th century fringe medical theories who marched to his own beat. Stearns and Company hardcover
