Schedules. "Founded in Baltimore in 1852 to operate a cargo and passenger steamship line between Baltimore and Boston Mass. The service initially operated with two wooden hulled side wheelers but in 1859 built two iron hulled steamers to augment services and extended services to call at Providence Rhode Island. Services were disrupted by the American Civil War but resumed in 1864. After a period of decline after the war the company slowly recovered and by 1869 were able to order a new ship. Further ships were built in the 1870s and in 1876 the Baltimore & Savannah SS Co. was purchased which allowed the company to enter the cotton trade between Savannah Charleston and New York. The company expanded in the 1880s and added several new ports of call including Newport News and Norfolk to their routes. In 1900 a Philadelphia - Savannah service was started and in 1907 the Winsor Line of Philadelphia was purchased with their fleet of seven steamers. A new route between Baltimore and Jacksonville commenced in 1909 and in 1920 a service was initiated to Havana Cuba but this was discontinued after about a year. A service to Nassau Bahamas started in 1939 but on the entry of the United Stated into World War II in 1941 most of the company's ships were requisitioned for war duty. Limited services continued but after the war it was not considered financially viable to re-purchase ships which had been sold to the Government or to build new ships and in 1948 it was decided to cease trading. The company was officially liquidated in 1952." Pamphlet includes overview of the company; information about places along the route to include Chesapeake Bay Old Point Comfort Fort Monroe Hampton Hampton Roads and Norfolk; general information about the ships and officers; information about what one can expect while sailing; information on various rooms aboard the ship to include the Social Hall the Saloon the Companionway and Staterooms and the Culinary Department. [Miners' Protective Association]
APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE MINERS' PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION DATED AT CRIPPLE CREEK COLORADO JUNE 30 1915 COMPLETED BY ERNEST GEORGE AHL AGE 19
Colorado 1915. 5-1/2" x 8-3/4". Printed form on pink paper completed in ink manuscript two holes punched at top. Very Good.

Ernest George Ahl age 19 born in Sweden and residing at 214 No. 4 St. Victor lists his occupation as trammer and claims eleven months' experience at Stratton's Independence Mine. He recites that he has never been a member of the Western Federation of Miners or a member of any labor organization. He states that he is "in sympathy with the objects and purposes of the Miners' Protective Association. . . and will abide by and observe the Constitution and By-Laws as may be prescribed by its Executive Committee." He signs the document. On the verso are additional notes regarding his application.
The Stratton Independence Mine & Mill was located in the Cripple Creek Mining District in Victor Colorado on the south slope of Battle Mountain. Named after Winfield Scott Stratton who discovered the mine on July 4 1891 it was site of the first major strike in the Cripple Creek/Victor area. The disputes led to the formation of the Western Federation of Miners in 1893. Tensions between management and workers escalated into the Colorado Labor Wars of 1903. The Miners' Protective Association formed in Virginia City in May 1863 opposed pending wage cuts and created a benefit fund for sick and injured miners and their families. By 1912 it had established an office in Cripple Creek which was made up of both employers and employees. Mining American Volume 65 1912 p.197.
Ernest George Ahl was born in Malmere Shana Sweden on June 28 1896 and died in San Diego California on June 21 1923. Not much is known about him; Swedish emigration records show him leaving for New York on June 11 1914. His Declaration of Naturalization occurred March 1917 at San Diego California; he registered for the World War I draft on June 8 1917 and listed his employer at the time as Portland Gold Mining Company; he is listed in the Roster of Men and Women Who Served in The World War From Colorado 1917-1918 Teller County as a private in the Infantry. unknown

Kenfig Hill Bridgend South Wales. 1 February 1911 to 18 January 1938. The present volume provides a fascinating sidelight into the operations of an archetypal Working Men's Club Labour leader Ed Milliband was recently described as being 'more at home in Primrose Hill than Kenfig Hill' at what was perhaps the high point of such an institution covering the period from just before the Great War to the end of the Depression of the 1930s. The accounts relate to two locations: the Cefn Institute and the Talbot Miners' Welfare Institute. The latter was founded in 1911 after a gift from the Talbot family and closed in 1959. A listed building it reopened with lottery funding in 2005. The item is 270pp. large 4to. In printed ledger by Western Mail Limited of Cardiff: in double column with 'Receipts' including printed columns for the Kenfig Hill collieries Aberbaidon Ton Philip Bryndu Cribbwr Vawr on the left-hand opening and 'Expenditure' on the right. A sturdy 41 x 34 cm. volume with plum leather quarter-binding and grey cloth covers. In gilt on spine: 'General Income and Expenditure Book'. Internally good on lightly-aged paper in aged and worn binding. Occasional sets of accounts are dated and marked as 'Audited and found correct' and signed and dated by two individuals. Loosely inserted in the volume are manuscript memoranda 2pp. 4to on one leaf with one side carrying a list of 12 Kenfig Hill names and addresses headed 'January 12th 1920 Management Committee Aberberbaiden sic for Aberbaiden a Kenfig colliery together with the name and address of the 'Examiners Rep'. The volume also contains three loose receipts dated 1913 1914 and 1938 and a note in Welsh. The first page of the volume contains a record of sums raised by 'Tickets sold for opening concert' and at the rear are two entries relating to the 'Opening Ceremony' on 20 September 1911: a record of the 'Proceeds of Tickets sold at doors' £6 16s 0d and eleven guineas to J. D. Dover for the 'cost of Luncheon'. The accounts cover everything from methylated spirits to waste paper baskets and a note indicates the care with which the accounts were kept: 'N.B. Of the £8 18s 1d received from the Collieries prior to the appointment of D H Price as Treasurer - the Sum of £8 6s 9d was expended before his appointment and the Balance 11s/4d was transferred to him and acknowledged on opposite page - receipt No. 9'. These exhibits all promoted the nationalistic agenda of progress at the Paris Exposition, illustrating American advancement in art, education, and society." ; "Johnston was a significant-and arresting-figure in early twentieth-century photography.Johnston produced a good deal of the usual society portraiture of the time-including a nude photograph of a debutante that prompted the girl's outraged father to file a lawsuit-but she was also an important photodocumentarian. Students of African American history can reexamine life at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) or Tuskegee using hundreds of photographs made by Johnston at the turn of the last century.through Johnston's work we can see Admiral Dewey on the deck of the USS Olympia, the Roosevelt children playing with their pet pony at the White House, and the gardens of Edith Wharton's famous villa near Paris. Johnston's major project on early vernacular architecture of the American South preserves scores of buildings that no longer exist except on her film." ; photos of the famous include Thordore ROosevelt, Susan B Anthony, Mark Twain, William McKinley, Joel Chandler Harris, Admiral Dewey, Booker T. Washington, Jacob Riis, Alexander Graham Bell, Jane E Clark, Andrew Carnegie, George Washington Carver, John Phillip Sousa, Helen Hay, John Milton Hay, General LEonard Ward, Julia Marlowe, Richard Hovey, Margaret James, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, Albert Beveridge, Edith Wharton, DIfford Pinchot, Jane Cowl, and Ryan Tillman
