[ALASKA -- COAL MINING ATLAS]. [WALKER, John P., McDANIEL, GG. (Surveyors) & DAVIDSON, Charles E. (Surveyor General)]. G. G.
Matanuska Coal Field showing leasing units government reservations and topographic township plats Alaska. . . .
Washington D.C. & Juneau A.T.: Superintendent of Documents U.S. Surveyor General’s Office 1916. Oblong Atlas Folio. 24 x 19 in. 14 colour maps 1 large folding 17.25 x 41.5 in. Printed softcovers stapled and paper reinforcement at gutter margin some minor toning & soiling to fore-edges edgewear to spine minor scuffing and a couple removed label ghosting still VG- bright copy. First edition of this remarkably scarce plat map atlas for the Matanuska coal fields and township sites surveyed by Walker & McDaniel during their surveys following those on the Kenai Peninsula. By 1912 with the act establishing Alaska as a U.S. Territory and in 1914 the authorization to construct an Alaska Railroad there became an increased need and demand for coal. The Matanuska mines located about 45 miles northeast of Anchorage first began production in 1916 and would stay in continuous production through both World War I and World War II and well into the 20th Century re-opening again in the 21st Century. Not only do these maps show available government lease sites for coal mines but also available Township sites for homesteaders as required by the original Homestead Acts of 1866 and the 1916 Act for Alaska requiring surveys and resurveys to accurately determine boundaries of unsold railroad lands and identify their boundaries. [Consumers' Mutual Coal Company]; James Lynd, President
The Consumers’ Mutual Coal Company. Capital Stock: 50000 shares at $10 per Share $500000. President James Lynd. Treasurer Josiah Kisterbock No. 1231 Market Street . Office No. 5 1/2 South Sixth Street

Philadelphia: H. Evans printer Fourth & Library 1864. 16pp. Pamphlet. 8vo. Printed wrappers with added 1865 title cancel: “Stock at Par Till Feb. 1st 1865 Only.â€; stitched. Vertical crease; wrappers with two small abraisions affecting a few words; brief soiling; good. Accompanied by an undated though 1865 one-page 4to. printed circular letter issued by James Lynd President and a printed two-page 4to. 1865 resolutions and updated subscription circular. Folds; very good.

Scarce immediate post-Civil War-era coal mining prospectus with only four institutional holdings for The Consumers’ Mutual Coal Company. It is accompanied by two contemporary circulars from the company promoting investment in its Pennsylvania coal.

This group including the 1864 pamphlet with a tipped-on printed cover-title “cancel†relates to a January 1865 attempt to attract new investors by offering stock at par for a limited time. The pamphlet prospectus might therefore be considered a variant issue promulgated in early 1865.

The Consumers’ Mutual Coal Company. Capital Stock… prospectus seeks investors to subscribe to the company’s stock:

"We most earnestly present this Organization to the public as one eminently claiming their support it being the desire of the present Stockholders that the subscriptions to this stock shall be confined to actual consumers so that the original object shall be carried out viz. : supplying a great want in an important department of domestic economy. It is therefore desirable that Consumers of Coal shall speedily come in and take the remaining shares thereby preventing any portion of the Stock from falling into the hands of speculators—which the directors have been careful so far to avoid. p2 emphases in original"

The pamphlet explains “The Mutual Principle†and “The Mutual System†of investment. It also reprints two newspaper articles describing the company’s collieries in Berks and Schuylkill Counties Pennsylvania. Also found are testimonials and a list of names of about 1000 subscribers. A printed label appended after-the-fact above the title reads: “Stock at Par Till Feb. 1st 1865 Only.â€

Accompanying it is an undated circular letter from The Consumers’ Mutual Coal Co. president James Lynd. Internal references within suggest it was created after a meeting of the board of directors which took place according to the second circular on January 6 1865. Lynd’s circular likely served a “cover letter†for the extended stock offer: “There are surely few if any investments that pay better; and as to its safety and reliability the Board invite every test and scrutiny.â€

The second circular prints the resolutions enacted at that January 6 1865 Directors’ meeting and includes a list of approx. 250 additional new stockholders “since last publication.†
An unusually complete collection of printed investment matter likely mailed out together in a single envelope based on the folds relating to a new effort to attract investors.

OCLC: LCP Office of Commonwealth Libraries Hagley AAS. A variant imprint: LCP and Hagley.
unknown

"The fight of these courageous mountaineer coal miners is the fight of all of us who are opposed to the use by the Coal Barons of the rack and the thumbscrew in dealing with men who work. The miners are headed toward the electric chair by the economic masters of the Cumberland Coal Fields. Two of them have already been convicted on framed up charges of conspiracy to murder a coal company gun thug. Forty more remain to be tried." - The General Defense Committee

The General Defense Committee is an organization that strives to "defend and support the entire working class divided and under attack by those who wage class war against us. We therefore promote through organization action and outreach a mass non-sectarian defense of the class in order to build a self-organized working class that treats differences as strengths and opportunities to live in solidarity. Community Self Defense means we intend to build our revolutionary community precisely by defending it and the earth on which we live."

Coal mining was fundamental to the Appalachian area for close to 150 years forming much of its economic backbone. The struggle against starvation wages and for better working conditions escalated during the winter of 1930-31 resulting in one of the most intense labor disputes in American history - the Harlan County Coal War. By early 1931 nearly 6000 coal miners were on strike. This pamphlet rails against the injunctions yellow-dog contracts evictions and gun thugs who strove to take away the miners' rights to free assemblage free speech and picketing. The mines of Harlan County played a significant role in the history of grassroots labor militancy. General Defense Committee [Industrial Workers of the World / I.W.W. / IWW] unknown
