GRIGOR was a solicitor who tried to highlight the procedures for the legal hunting of game for the Country Gentlemen to avoid the attentions of the Provincial Magistrates who were responsible for enforcing the poaching acts. The author may be the same gentleman who had been a merchants son born 1805 who became a solicitor in the Supreme Courts in Edinburgh in 1833. Only two copies of this edition of Grigors work are known: Edinburgh University and Trinity College Dublin. Exceedingly rare. "Instructions to Young Sportsmen" was written by British soldier and sportsman Lt. Col. Peter Hawker. Hawker served in the Royal Dragoons under Wellington during the Peninsular Campaign in which he was wounded. His sporting exploits and writings were widely followed during his lifetime. He was regarded as one of the best "shots" of the 19th century and his writings are classics of the genre. xv 1 150 pp. Bound in full tan leather with red leather spine label gilt lettering and borders. Marbled endpapers. Exterior is lightly worn along edges with a very small chip near head of spine. Some foxing and light corner creases throughout.
