‎Adler Suits Standee - "Adler Collegian clothes. They keep you looking your best."‎

‎Milwaukee MI: Adler Company c.1927. Colour lithographic image mounted on sturdy card-stock c.559 x 356 mm decorative Arts & crafts style border at foot. Some minor edgewear lettering at borders slightly cropped in order for the display to be trimmed to a standard sizevery light soiling lower fore-edge remains a very good example complete with its hinged cardboard stand mounted verso. Striking counter display advertisement for the Adler Company "Collegian" men's suits line in a style reminiscent of the California Plein-Air School with two sharp young men in Adler suits standing at a carved stone wall talking to a young beautiful co-ed in a jaunty orange hat. The "Collegian" line was aimed at college men or anyone who cared about "perfect style with points of refinement". Although their advertising was not specifically collegiate their advertising campaigns usually employed images that conjured idealised college associations implying that the purchase of an Adler ready-to-wear suit was the essential ante for success in college business and the all aspects of the appropriate middle-class lifestyle. This piece offers a beautiful example of Jazz Age aspirational advertising. The Adler Company was founded in 1848 by Solomon Adler in Milwaukee Wisconsin and thrived through the Civil War the Victorian era eventually employing over 900 people with nation-wide sales in the 1920s over $1.5m. During the Jazz Age the Adler Company became synonymous with their Collegian line. The company was liquidated after the crash in 1929. Daniel Clark Creating the College Man American Mass Magazines and Middle-Class Manhood pp. 165-168; and Historic Designation Study Report Emanuel D. Adler House pp. 5-6. ‎Annis Fur Post Season 1922-1923.‎

‎Detroit: Newton Annis 1922. Folio. Wire-stitched in the original illustrated card wraps. 48-page brochure with over 100 half-tone illustrations from photographs. A little rubbed one leaf torn without loss archival tissue repair one gathering slightly loose but overall very good. Uncommon trade catalogue for fashion fur - coats capes scarves hats and muffs for the Jazz Age. The types of fur include chinchilla ermine monkey mink fur seal leopard white fox beaver marmot civet and caracul. Annis Fur Post was founded in 1887 by Isaac Newton Annis 1858-1939 who had started collecting furs around his home in southern Michigan as a young man. In 1880 he was employed by Frederick Buhl and Company a Detroit fur pioneer in the manufacturing department and remarkably by August 1887 on a capital of less than $1000 Annis started in business for himself with four employees. By the 1920s he had over 120 employees and was a major supplier to the American fashion trade. The business continued successfully until the 1980s when changing tastes forced scaling back and eventual closure. This beautifully produced catalogue is highly evocative the oh-so luxurious and stylish 20s. Detroit: Newton Annis, paperback‎

‎Fans - 1932.‎

‎Harrisburg PA: The Myers Manufacturing Co. 1932. Small quarto 232 x 260 mm Wire-stitched in the original colour-printed wraps. 27 full-page coloured illustrations of pictorial fan designs. Wraps a little rubbed mild cockling of the catalogue pages but overall very good indeed. Spectacular trade catalogue featuring the vivid pictorial fans produced by The Myers Manufacturing Co. a Pennsylvania novelty company founded by Dr. L.B. Myers the first man to patent rubber tips for pencils. Myer's fans were essentially an advertising medium commended for their "distinctive appearance - large advertising space - compactness" and insert offers "Suggested Copy for Fan Advertisements". The subject matter of the images is unashamedly populist sentimental and even religiose - "Guarding his flock" Christ with sheep - that of "Colored Mother and Child" is described as "An unexcelled medium for the advertiser who serves the race." A quite extraordinary survival. Harrisburg, PA: The Myers Manufacturing Co., paperback‎

‎Parfums Lucien Lelong.‎

‎Paris: Lucien Lelong 13 rue Alphonse de Neuville 1949. Octavo. Original plain boards in cream wrapper front panel with company device embossed within debossed cartouche. 10 chromolithographic plates after illustrations by Cassandre and similarly printed plates from photographs of the perfume bottles themselves by Réné Messager. Wrappers a little rubbed and irregularly toned spine slightly chipped at ends repair to short split at head of front joint contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper else very good. First edition rare with no other copies traced of this spectacular promotional brochure for Lelong's fragrances. Largely forgotten today apart from amongst the couture cognoscenti Lelong 1889–1958 was enormously influential. After the First World War Lelong took charge of his parents' small fashion house which was noted for its espousal of the modern look—the chic autobiographical heroine of Colette's 1908 novella Les Vrilles de la vigne is dressed by Lelong—and continued their tradition of innovation advancing the concept of the "kinétique" clothes "constructed in such a way that their true shape would emerge in movement not at rest". Not a designer himself he employed a number of young designers who were later to strike out on their own. Christian Dior Pierre Balmain and Hubert de Givenchy all spent time developing collections for Lelong. His contribution to the success of the house was in his vision and his marketing brilliance: he redesigned his parents' salon decorating entirely in black so that it was said to resemble a black-lined jewellery box he offered discounts to society women who agreed to be photographed in his dresses and was early into the branded perfume market. The first fragrances offered by Lelong were enigmatically named A B C J and N intending to evoke a sense of mystery and romance. The artfully designed bottles were largely the work of Lelong himself. Over 30 years he created a total of 27 different fragrances. This superbly produced catalogue features ten suitably mysterious and evocative plates by Cassandre né Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron the Ukrainian-born French painter illustrator poster designer and typographer probably best-known for his imposing poster for the great CGT liner Normandie. ‎New York: Standard Fashion Company June 1895. 4to. 96 pp. 1 large folding colour chromolithograph frontisp. sized 21.5 x 10.75 in. 1 colour chromolithograph plate over 150 woodcut text illustrations & engravings. Gold-coloured printed softcovers brick-red lettering minor dustsoiling light wear to creases of folding frontisp. still VG copy. First edition of this scarce and beautifully printed fashion magazine which was published under this title only from 1894 through 1896 when it was forced to change the name to The Standard Designer after losing a lawsuit brought by the Butterick Publishing Co. against Frank Koewing d. 1933 their former western sales manager for Butterick. Founded in 1887 the Standard Fashion Co. would eventually become a serious rival to the Butterick Pattern Co. appropriating the “Delineator†for his magazine poaching employees and eventually building the company to issuing over 100000 cut patterns a week. While often facing bankruptcy and litigious to a fault the company was acquired as a subsidiary in 1900 by Butterick and the combined companies would thrive through the ensuing decades. Each of the Standard Delineator magazine issues featured a large chromolithograph frontispiece of the latest fashions as well as a smaller one of millinery designs. We have been unable to discover much about the artist Mr. Leigh. But he was clearly an accomplished designer colorist and draftsman. We do know he was based in New York City and assume given the professional skill with which these works were executed that he likely worked in the industry either for a designer or a fashion magazine. The portraits themselves are quintessentially post-war in their style and taste clearly indebted to VOGUE and their artists. A beautiful primary collection of 1950s high fashion. unknown‎

‎Photographs of Jazz Era Window Displays for Meier & Frank's Department Store Portland OR.‎

‎Portland OR: Charles O. Stevens & Max Sommers Feature Service c.1925. 4 large window-display photographs image 247 x 178 mm; print 350 x 279 mm of of flapper era women's spring and summer fashions in the windows of Meier & Frank in downtown Portland Oregon wet-stamps of Stevens and Sommers verso of two of the prints Some spotting two hole-punched at left margin one also with a small chip at the upper fore-edge not affecting image one creased at the corner solely in the margin remain very good. Four real black and white photo images on semi-gloss stock of the windows of Meier & Frank at night. Founded in 1857 at the time of these images Meier & Frank humorously referred to locally as Murphy & Finnigan's was the largest retail outlet west of the Mississippi one of the largest in the country. These four salesman's sample photos from the 20s offer an invaluable historical reference for the marketing of women's fashions at the height of the Jazz Age. Two of the photos include distinctive art deco themes with Ikebana-inspired flower arrangements amongst geometric display elements. The styles include typically 20s drop-waisted dresses in one and cocktail or party dresses with full skirts in chiffon in the other. Another creates a fantastic formalised setting incorporating a large French Madame Pompadour-style fan in the background with heavy brocade swags interspersed with large Asparagus Ferns in jardinières; while the other identified as "Spring" on a small placard - includes an Italianate garden terrace setting with amphorae and rose-twined balusters. Portland, OR: Charles O. Stevens, & Max Sommers Feature Service, unknown‎

‎Paris: Societe Paritys / Lebotys 1957. Post binder with 3 brass posts decorative screw tops. Publisher's color pictorial glazed boards blue spine and joints. Board edges rubbed and worn; short split to rear outer joint; inner joints tender paper splitting though cloth reinforcement beneath is intact. Page block foxed occasional foxing/spotting throughout; light offsetting from fabric samples to some pages. Fabric sample generally clean and bright with occasional creasing/fraying. Overall Gd. 97 pp. 16 color fashion drawings; ~ 740 pasted or tipped-in fabric samples. 16-1/8" x 12-1/8"

A mid-century salesman's sample catalogue from the winter collection of Parisian firm Société Paritys a haberdashery and fabric supplier established in 1946 and still in operation today. The fabric samples have been supplied by Lebotys a couture design firm in its own right and highly regarded for the quality of its textiles. As we find record of Lebotys having issued catalogues of its own collections in both the 1930s and 1960s we speculate that the two firms collaborated for a limited time possibly due to continuing post-war shortages and the need to adapt to the rapidly changing clothing market of the 1950s. The late 1950s saw a revolution in French fashion — and by extension Western fashion in general — due in no small part to the influence of material factors underlying the purely aesthetic side of the industry: availability of fabric continuing technological advances in synthetics and the surging post-war economies of America and Europe. The reluctant expansion of haute couture into the ready-to-wear market during the latter half of the century and the increasing reliance on synthetic fabrics to meet the demand would ultimately spell a major shift in the industry one that would impact fashion trends for decades to come. Some fashion houses like Dior whose “New Look” revitalized fashion at the beginning of the decade successfully managed to adapt by issuing couture ready-to-wear lines. Some however even long-established houses survived the war only to be undone by the prosperity that followed. The collaboration here of Société Paritys and Lebotys as well as the fabrics offered and styles displayed leads us to infer that the two firms were likely targeting the growing ready-to-wear market. The fabrics include a variety of silks cottons wools mohair etc. as well as nylon fibranne rayon Rhodia tergal crylor acetate and other “Matieres Synthètiques” often in blends and advertising their washable and/or antiwrinkling qualities. The styles in the illustrations still heavily influenced by the “New Look” emphasize wasp-waisted dresses hourglass silhouettes etc. No copies located on OCLC nor the major French institutions as searched on KVK. Ferris Woolen Company a subsidiary of Wawak Woolens was originally founded in 1922 in Chicago along with Detmer Woolen Co. Bruner Woolen Co. Mason & Hanson Inc. and Salter & Wolf to supply woolens and trimmings to tailors and department stores across the United States. The companies were known for their high-quality wools at a reasonable price and often incorporated imported wool wool silk blends gabardines and tweeds especially from Scotland Wales France and Great Britain. In 1933 the Wawak Co./Ferris Woolen Co. purchased the exclusive right to all the Detmer Bruner Co. customers West of the Mississippi. They quickly began commissioning and producing display cases reflecting the change and proved very successful with the Ferris Woolen Co. catering to the trade into the 1960s. These sample cases were very expensive to produce and so were most often found in department stores mercantiles and menÕs stores which would have these display on the sales floor for two seasons or more often adding or subtracting fabrics as they became available. The samples included with this case offer invaluable textile reference for the colors and fabrics during the era of fashion influenced by the elegance and glamor of Hollywood films and film noir at the time. The styles depicted on the inside of the lid and the drop-down front are reminiscent of the very popular Thin Man fashions worn by William Powell and Myrna Loy at the time.
