Germana Marucelli (Settignano 1905 - Milano 1983) è stata l’apripista della moda concettuale ed è considerata la “sarta” più intellettuale della moda italiana, in ideale sintonia con la contemporaneità. Convinta della «interdisciplinarietà tra moda e arte», riprese il filo di un’esperienza risalente alle avanguardie di inizio Novecento (praticata, tra gli altri, dal futurista F.T. Marinetti e dalla sarta Rosa Genoni) e, nel 1948, in collaborazione con il pittore e scenografo P. Zuffi, presentò una collezione ispirata al surrealismo; nel 1950, poi, fondò e finanziò il premio di poesia S. Babila che fu assegnato a S. La delimitazione geografica e cronologica di questo lavoro - i secoli XVII-XVIII in Italia - vuole cogliere il segmento temporale nel quale la "moda", il lusso e le leggi suntuarie sussumono un ruolo più specifico in un confronto non solo fra i sempre più autonomi stati nazionali, ma anche con mondi lontani solo da poco scoperti. L'abbigliamento è sempre esistito, in quanto risponde a un istinto primario, quello del coprirsi, e quindi del vestirsi, e con esso anche il lusso, come anche le leggi suntuarie che indicavano i limiti, soprattutto etici, del vestirsi. Ma è l'entrata "Mode", nella sezione arts dell'Encyclopédie che ne delinea il nuovo ruolo e l'ormai già avvenuto processo storico. La grande attenzione dedicata alle tematiche culturali e ai nuovi fenomeni di diffusione dell'abbigliamento al di fuori delle corti e dei palazzi ha insieme prodotto forme di repressione dell'ostentazione di abiti di lusso. In questo, snodo fondamentale è stato il Seicento, preludio della modernità, che ha contrassegnato un'epoca di profonde trasformazioni culturali, ideologiche e scientifiche: è questo il secolo di Galilei, Bacon e Cartesio tra gli altri. Nello spazio lasciato aperto tra le sempre più massicce importazioni estere e le conseguenti leggi a sostegno della produzione italiana, tra l'imitazione dei modelli stranieri e la volontà di manifestare la propria creatività, in generale in ambito culturale e in quello artistico in particolare, tra la tendenza a seguire le norme e il desiderio di evasione, si dispiegano le pagine di questo lavoro.

Mary Zimbalist film actress and disciple of Krishnamurti. Collection of 28 letters and cards to playwright Christopher Fry an intimate and affectionate correspondence on a number of topics.
From Brockwood Park Bramdean Hampshire and Ojai California. Between 1978 and 2008. A total of twenty-eight items of correspondence comprising: nineteen Autograph Letters Signed two on the backs of cards two Typed Letters Signed and seven Autograph Cards Signed. In good condition. All signed 'Mary' and the large part addressed to 'Christopher' with a few to 'Kit' and one to 'Dear Phyl i.e. Fry's wife Phyllis dear Christopher'. The correspondence indicates a deep affection and long-standing intimacy. In 1987 she transcribes entries from her diary of 1958 regarding dinners in Rome between the Frys and Zimbalists while Fry was working on the script of the film 'Ben Hur' which Sam Zimbalist produced commenting: 'it is startling to find how these pale ink lines evoke us then – almost 20 sic years ago'. Later in the letter she states: 'I wish I could have seen the tv broadcast of The Lady and hope you have a video recording of it. It is like wanting to again hear the English language rising and thundering like winter surf and pure as a Bach prelude. Since Christopher Fry this does not happen these days.' In 1997 she writes: 'So many things hovered in my head all night some of them reaching back to Italian summer days when you and Phyl and Sam and I were together. An unbroken line began then for me of feeling whenever I was with Phyl and you that all was well with the world. That has continued ever since – something wondrously enduring.' And in 2000 she tells him that hearing his news 'is a sort of centre of gravity'. Topics include: her pleasure in his messages and calls texts he has sent her 'What you have said about death and love touches so many things I feel profoundly and the eloquence is no less than the truth.' her admiration for his work 'Language is such a root of human understanding. Other writers seem to be stuttering alongside the eloquence of your plays. Your language unfolds in breadth in splendour a music of the mind. It is as if you are creating language of a different order new and yet with its original and intrinsic meaning freed.' her travels her health in 1988: 'I seem to be hobbling about with little grace but ground-covering success' the taking of vitamins a centenarian's death. In 1999 she comments on a list of 'Krishnamurti books' she is sending him concluding by noting that 'Krishnamurti's Notebook' is 'one that is not personal for a time a daily recording of consciousness. In it he notes the curious physical pain he called “the processâ€. It had begun with extreme severity in 1922 after a spiritual experience that altered his life and continued to manifest from time to time with differing intensity. He did not consider it as physical illness but as having to do with perceptive ability. He never took anything to mitigate or affect it and seldom spoke of it.' Dagli abiti delle passerelle al prestigio del made in Italy, il nostro paese detta legge nella moda e nel bel vivere grazie alla capacità senza uguali di unire l'abilità secolare degli artigiani alle intuizioni di brillanti imprenditori. Ma quali sono le origini di questo straordinario successo? Dopo aver raccontato con brio le storie tutte italiane del libro, della finanza e della buona cucina, Alessandro Marzo Magno ci mostra, in un viaggio nel tempo che dall'antichità arriva fino ai nostri giorni, in che modo e perché nei secoli è cambiata l'idea di eleganza, e perché l'Italia è sempre stata al centro di questi cambiamenti. Ci racconta di come gli uomini nel Cinquecento si imbottissero le calzemaglie sui polpacci e sulle natiche per sembrare più muscolosi, o come le donne nel Seicento, in attesa dell'era del silicone, indossassero seni artificiali di cartapesta. Ci rivela in che modo si sia passati dagli abiti variopinti del rinascimento a quelli noiosamente monocromi della nostra epoca, e di quando il buon gusto imponeva scarpe altissime, fino a mezzo metro, o strettissime, un paio di misure in meno, e apparire alla moda provocava sofferenze e svenimenti. Si parla dei singolari tatuaggi religiosi che dal santuario di Loreto si affermano nel resto d'Europa, di quando a Venezia l'unguento è diventato profumo, e di come grazie ai Medici si sia diffuso nelle corti di Firenze prima e di Parigi poi. Davanti ai nostri occhi scorrono così, come in una sfilata ideale, le infinite fogge di cappelli, guanti, calze, parrucche e accessori che, partendo dalle nostre città e dalla nostra geniale fantasia, hanno contribuito, con stile, a rendere più bello il mondo.
