VICTORIAN FASHION SAMPLES.
A marvelous and massive Victorian American sample catalogue filled with over 700 fancy lace embroideries trims metal trims many with Arts & Crafts-inspired designs some Japanese-inspired silk designs and more.
New Jersey & New York: n.p. ca. 1895. Elephant folio. 15 x 19.5 by 2.5 in. 84 pp unpaginated. on think clay-sized paper stock. With 732 textile lace and embroidery samples tipped-in ranging in size from 1 x 1 in. up to 9 x 12 in. with most of the samples identified by stock numbers and occasional pricing in ink manuscript either below or to the side. Contemporary purple linen sample book raised bands marbled endpapers minor edgewear some wear & minor splitting to the outer cloth at head & foot of spine outer hinge starting occasional dustsoiling & edgewear to some of the leaves offsetting from samples a few samples removed several laid-in loose still a VG- exemplar w/ label for J.M. Bleyer Stationer Printer Paper 20-22 E. 21st St. NY on front pastedown. Joseph Bleyer 1862-1916 was an Austrian-born stationer and paper dealer who according to city directories opened his shop around 1889 was located at this address in 1895-96 and the firm would declare bankruptcy after his death in 1917. This astonishing sample catalogue for Gilded Age fancy laces embroideries trims and fabrics worn by stylish women at the end of the 19th century is one of the most lavish such productions by an American firm we have ever catalogued. The family from whom this sample catalogue originated maintained that it was prepared by an ancestor’s trim and lace factory in New Jersey which also operated a wholesale operation in New York. Haute couture fashions in the 1890s reflected a rich and decorative aesthetic incorporating silk threads gold and silver thread embroideries elaborate lace trims bodices beautifully decorated and richly ornamented sleeves collars capes and more. Many similar fancy trims and embroideries can be seen in Victorian dresses designed by James McCreary Paul Doucet colourful designs depicted in such contemporary magazines as the Delineator. These incorporate Arts & Crafts patterns clearly influenced by William Morris with special emphasis on organic shapes as well rich colours striking geometric shapes epaulets and more. These samples encompass embroidered cotton silk & linen laces silk blends many are rich brocades and embroidered cuffs with rich bright jewel colours including reds deep greens purples golds gold thread pieces as well as beautifully embroidered blacks & navy blues brown velvets and more. Of interest are several leaves towards the end where the textile company has chosen to arrange the samples in a collage pattern reminiscent of French and Japanese factory and fabric store sample catalogues at the time. n.p., hardcover

"Il vestito dei sogni" è innanzitutto un "libro della memoria", che raccoglie i risultati della ricerca all'Archivio di Stato di Catania nelle fonti d'epoca sulla moda italiana e straniera a Catania. Ne "Il vestito dei sogni" la moda si sfoglia disinvoltamente attraverso un excursus di immagini di bozzetti, modellini, capi d'abbigliamento, oggetti vari e recensioni pubblicitarie dagli anni '30 agli anni '70 del XX secolo, tratte dai quotidiani d'archivio e selezionate con cura. In tal modo essa si rivede nelle sue più vaste accezioni: stili che si alternano in contesti politico-sociali e culturali diversi, storia di negozi della città etnea che nascono e che muoiono o che resistono, ricordi di un passato di industriosità e di eccellenza del 'Made in Italy', ove si impone con originalità il 'Made in Catania', spaccati di vita urbana, emozioni di gioventù, riviste e indossate come si fa con vecchi abiti riscoperti in fondo all'armadio.

In 8° (19,8x13 cm); 494, (2 di errata) e 2 c. di tav. fuori testo più volte ripiegate. Opera in buono stato di conservazione. Bella legatura coeva in mezza pelle, piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata. Tagli spruzzati i rosso. Titolo, autore e fregi in oro al dorso. Allo stesso dorso, sempre in oro, le iniziali dell’antico proprietario che identificano l’esemplare come appartenuto al Marchese Ludovico Guarenti. Le proprietà della celebre famiglia veronese dei Guarienti a Valeggio sul Mincio, dove vi era il palazzo di campagna di famiglia fin dal quattrocento, vennero disperse, in una celebre vendita pubblica, proprio alla morte di Ludovico Guarienti, nel 1859. All’inizio dell’opera dedicatoria di Dandolo a Carlo Verri. Prima edizione di questo celeberrimo studio dedicato alla storia della bachicoltura ed alla produzione della seta, scritto dal celebre agronomo, scienziato e politico veneziano, Vincenzo Dandolo (Venezia, 22 o 26 ottobre 1758 – Varese, 12 dicembre 1819). Il conte Vincenzo Dandolo fu figura di spicco della storia italiana. Fautore e animatore della Repubblica Veneta durante il periodo napoleonico si industriò in ogni modo per scongiurare il ritorno degli austriaci a Venezia, arrivando ad offrire a Napoleone 18.000 soldati pagati di suo pugno. Fu in contatto con i più accesi patrioti italiani e grazie a lui, durante il periodo della Repubblica veneta, vennero abolite numerose leggi liberticide, come quelle che limitavano la libertà di stampa e quelle che ostacolavano le riunioni dei circoli costituzionali. Finito il periodo napoleonico, deluso dalla situazione politica, si ritirò a Varese dove riprese i suoi amati studi scientifici.
