A History of the Regiments & Uniforms of the British Army.
A History of the Regiments & Uniforms of the British Army.
London: Seeley Service & Co. Very Good/Good. 1954. Third Edition. Hard Cover. Narrow 4to Dust jacket rubbed with loss to edges price clipped. Red cloth with bright gilt titling backed in black. Previous ownership inscription on f. paste downEnd papers marked. Colour frontis plate. 24 Colour Plates 336 pages clean and tight. THIS BOOK TELLS THE story of the British Army as a fighting machine. Since its formation from the veterans of Cromwell's "Model Army" and by the incorporation of the "Household" troops it has an unparalleled record of foreign campaigning. With every advance in weapons & to meet the fury of new enemies or the rigours of distant climes horse foot and guns have undergone ceaseless modification. But despite new uniforms new arms and new training the native courage and good humour of the British soldier remains constant; as the author writes : " it is more than likely that if a regiment distinguished itself at Minden or Waterloo it did so again at Alamein or in Normandy." . This extremely rare variant copy includes the text "Nach Original-Skizzen von E. R. Barteau" lithographed in blue on the cover plate. A splendid production. The beautiful plates are printed with rich, dense colours and excellent gloss. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least 9 separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than 20. Colas 230 .
