Elles ont été réalisées par Geissler, d'après les dessins réalisés lors du séjour, entrepris sur les ordres de Catherine II, à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1793. Ces planches nous révèlent en particulier les petits métiers présents à Saint-Pétersbourg à la fin du XVIIIe siècle: vendeurs à la criée et colporteurs, marchands d'oiseaux, de fleurs, d'oeufs, de fruits, de poissons, etc. Seules les pages de titre du premier cahier (un en français, l'autre en allemand) ont été conservées. Grand jeu de la géographie avec costumes coloriées.Paris engraved ca. 1830 issued ca. 1840. 18mo 11 x 7 cm. A complete deck of 25 numbered engraved playing cards on laid paper each card with a pictorial image 6.5 x 5.5 cm the image generally with 4 costume figures. The 25 cards and label therefore show 107 costume figures. Each card is backed with light blue laid paper coloured by hand as published and kept in a slipcase with the original publisher's engraved label.
Very rare deck of engraved playing cards for the "grand jeu de la géographie" an educational card game to teach people about clothing styles and cultural characteristics of all countries and regions of the world with "the most decorative and delightful color prints" Hargrave. Each card shows a scene with costume figures usually with a man and woman from one country or region in the foreground with the topographic name below the scene followed by a text describing the country or region usually including the name of its capital city and the nature of its people. Hargrave also notes that in these costume figures "the inhabitants of even the most far-away countries . are French to their fingertips and are utterly charming". The comments on the nature of the people in various cultures may tell us more about French views of exotic peoples than about the peoples themselves but they are surprisingly free of most of the frequent stereotypes of "primitive" societies.The foreground figures cover Europe cards 1-6 & 8: France England Austria Savoy Spain Hungary and Corsica; Asia cards 7 & 9-14: Turkey China Persia Iran the Mughal Empire Circassia on the northeast coast of the Black Sea the Maldives and Siam Thailand; Africa cards 16-18: the Barbary Coast "Juida" Whydah or Ouida now part of Benin and "Cazégut" Ponta in the Bijagós islands off Guinea; America cards 15 19-20 & 22: "Tschoutki" Chugach in southern Alaska Peru California the Baja peninsula and Acadia Nova Scotia and the South Pacific cards 21 23-25: Santa Christina Tahuata in the Marquesas Manila in the Philippines Tahiti and Iles des Amis Tonga.We have located only one set of these cards in libraries worldwide at Yale University. In 1966 Hargrave reported a set of these cards in the collection of The United States Playing Card Company with only 24 cards p. 68 or all 25 p. 82. Most of its collection went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville but these cards are not recorded in the library's catalogue. The Russian kartaslov website records a copy with only 24 cards.Card 20 is slightly browned and card 7 has a small cut at the foot not affecting the picture or text but the cards are otherwise in very good condition. 31 1 blank pp.Very rare first and only published part of a series of hand-coloured carnival costume plates each of the 12 with a letterpress description in German and French. Only plates 9 and 10 bear the name of the German draughtsman and engraver Friedrich Wilhelm Nettling best known for his portrait of Bach but all may have been engraved by him. The mostly comical or farcical plates illustrate a fairy with her entourage a Chinese man Don Quixote and Sancho Panza a group of beast people and many other extraordinary figures. Two figures in one plate wear funnels as hats like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Besides the 12 plates in the booklet itself the engravings on the boards show two male figures gymnasts one in a clown-like costume on the front and a dancing woman with a tambourine on the back.With some minor stains and the front of the binding slightly damaged in the lower margin and lower right corner spine cracked. Five vols. 8vo 240 x 172 mm. orig. finely decorated wrappers each set of endpapers finely painted with botanical landscapes orig. title labels on upper covers in manuscript new stitching. Japan: mid-Edo. A beautiful and remarkable luxury manuscript created on mica paper and richly illustrated in fine colors and brush describing and depicting all the elements of the costumes for the emperor the emperor "emeritus" the crown prince the prince's son male aristocrats retainers and guards of the court. Many of the costumes date from the Heian period. We learn from the first volume that the manuscript draws from three earlier texts: Shozoku shuyo sho 1614 Shozoku yoryo sho 1716 and Shozoku zushiki 1692. The author of our manuscript states that he has edited the earlier works and also made many additions. The luxurious illustrations are entirely new. Each volume has an index at the beginning listing the costumes described and illustrated. The first volume is devoted to the costumes of the emperor to be worn at the most formal ceremonies and religious events including headgear belts jackets trousers inner wear socks shoes fans jewelry and scepters. The illustrations of all these items are finely executed in rich colors and with delicate brushwork. Details of measurements materials patterns etc. are given in the text. The second volume is devoted to the wardrobe of the emperor "emeritus" the crown prince his son and costumes for young princes. There is also a most interesting section on Chinese-style formal costumes for the emperor. Vol. III is devoted to the costumes of the retainers and attending aristocrats. Along with illustrations of many elaborate clothes there are many fine illustrations of swords with adorned with shells and ivory with white sharkskin tsuka handles and elaborately decorated scabbards including a remarkable one covered in fur etc. The fourth volume is in part concerned with the attire for the guards. There are a number of illustrations of bows and arrows elaborate body armor finely decorated quivers etc. The second part of the volume discusses and depicts the attire to be worn by the emperor "emeritus" aristocrats and the prince for informal occasions. The final volume is concerned with headgear for men clothes for royal children fans for special occasions and richly decorated screens. The numerous color illustrations are of very great complexity and beauty. There is ample use of gold. The black-and-white illustrations are used to depict the underlying patterns of the fabrics and structures of the garments. The bindings of these volumes are also very remarkable. The outer wrappers are decorated with dragon motifs on mottled paper to which mica has been applied each different from the others. The insides of the wrappers have fine color illustrations of seasonal botanical landscapes each one of which is original and varied from the others. In excellent fresh condition. There is some occasional worming in Vols. I III IV and V but we do not find it offensive. hardcover

QUITE APPEALING LATER 19TH CENTURY HONEY BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO HANDSOMELY GILT covers with gilt fillet border and delicately tooled cornerpieces spine richly gilt in compartments tooled in the style of Bozerian with floral tools emanating from a central circlet on a densely stippled ground gilt titling turn-ins ruled in gilt with floral corner tooling marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Engraved printer's device on title and 60 FULL-PAGE COSTUME WOODCUTS by Assuerus van Londerseel after Nicolay. Front pastedown with bookplate of James Cowan; front free endpaper with bookplate of Allan Heywood Bright see below. Colas II 2203; Hiler pp. 656-57; Blackmer 1196 1580 ed.; Adams N-251. Pressed and perhaps lightly washed but with plenty of strength to the paper and the illustrations approximately forty percent of the gatherings with small inoffensive stain at lower outer corner one leaf with candle wax spot final leaf slightly soiled otherwise a fine copy with only the most trivial imperfections the text consistently fresh and clean and the attractive retrospective binding very bright and entirely unworn. This is a really excellent copy of a work that Colas says represents the finest and most influential introduction to Turkish costume not to mention the first study of its kind to appear in Western Europe. This first edition in Italian reprises in slightly reduced form the copperplate engravings of Louis Danet which appeared in the first edition published in Lyon in 1567. The Royal Geographer to Henri II Nicolas de Nicolay Seigneur d'Arfeville & de Belair 1517-83 was ordered by his king to join a number of other scholars on an embassy to Istanbul and to complete a thorough survey of the trip and places visited. The resulting report includes detailed descriptions and intricate engravings of some of the earliest portrayals to reach the West of the inhabitants of Algiers Tripoli the Barbary Coast Turkey Greece Persia and Armenia. Nicolay depicts the clothing of numerous occupations soldiers merchants lawyers and social strata slaves ladies paupers along with descriptions of cuisine manners city life and bathing customs. The handsome binding is unsigned but the design and delicate gilt embellishment of corners and spine compartments suggests that it might have been done by someone like Tout. Previous owner Allan Heywood Bright 1862-1941 was a businessman and Liberal MP for Oswestry. Building on his family's long history of collecting Bright specialized in esoteric and particularly rare books. His library sold for nearly �5 million at Christie's in 2014. While this book is not extraordinarily rare it seldom appears in the kind of desirable condition seen here. Willem Silvius unknown

A compilation of 73 brightly colored watercolors many with manuscript captions in German some are dated for the costume all clipped and mounted into book and illustrating the costumes and attributions of court officials knights Templar Tartar costume St. George on horseback German orders of nobility also for Spain France Holland Italian Turkish Egypt and Babylon and other various orders as in Order of the Garter in England and France and religious dress of ordained and lay members of various orders including German Italian Spanish and Cistercian Carmelite Carthusian Capuchin and Franciscan monks. Also Jesuit pilgrims and sisters of the Benedictine Sylvestrine and Cistercian among other lesser-known orders and historical figures such as Leopold III of Austria and Louis III of Tremoilles. Early 19th-century half calf over imitation silk cloth-covered boards and decorative endpapers spine with label COSTUME; some light foxing most severe at beginning otherwise the colors remaining extraordinarily fresh and bright. Armorial bookplate from the Princely house of Liechtenstein on front pastedown. <br/><br/>Unique compilation of 73 expertly executed hand-colored watercolors of various religious knightly and official orders with a bookplate of the royal arms of Liechtenstein. Each figure is executed with extraordinary talent and is superbly hand-colored in a range of washes; many of these costumes have changed very little and have a history stretching back to medieval times. In the twentieth century an interest in costume and fashion books was spurred on by the dawning Victorian age in England in the 1830s which then spread to the continent. Each picture in this unique set is an individual work of art full of expression and with strikingly attractive faces and gestures. The expert attention given to each work of art strongly suggests this book was a maquette for a larger print-run of a souvenir book of costumes. Captions are in German and early provenance points to possible creation in the principality of Liechtenstein. One can think of the principalitys official motto For God Prince and Fatherland and see how all these official garments best represent a history of European court and important religious connections for an established royal line such as Liechtenstein. Perhaps this book was once in the royal home of the Johann I Joseph Prince of Liechtenstein who had fourteen children and it may have belonged to his son Prince Friedrich Adalbert 1807-1885 who later became the 1018th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria. With interesting connections to the royal house of Liechtenstein and 73 examples of hand-colored historic costumes this truly is a unique survival. hardcover books
