2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with a folding engraved map (lightly spotted) as frontispiece, 12 copper-engraved plates (including portraits), very numerous wood-engraved illustrations (including armorial bearings and brasses), pedigrees and plans (many full-page) in the text, 8 folding or full-page pedigrees and 2 folding plans; original publisher's blue cloth, sides with multiple frame border enclosing a decorative spray all in black, gilt backs, hinges cracked (but bindings entirely sound), one or two short tears in backstrips else a very good, clean copy. A standard county history, complete with list of subscribers. The folding county map in particular is often missing. The first edition is very elusive. It was reissued with an altered title two years later, and this version was subsequently reprinted at least twice. The abridged 'third' edition of 1843 was reprinted in facsimile in 1992. EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Astonishingly, not recorded by Anderson who lists only the second issue of 1831.

GOLBORNE (John)
The Report of John Golborne, Engineer, concerning the Drainage of the North Level of the Fens, and the Outfal of the Wisbeach River.
First edition, 4to, [2], 3-11, [1]pp., large fine folding map at end drawn by Mr. Elstobb, "Vere sculp. Maiden Lane Covt. Gardn.", orig. wrappers, a fine copy. The report to the General Commissioners concerning the drainage of the north level of the fens. Both Golborne and Yeoman reported on the drainage of the North Level in 1769, followed by Grundy's report of 1770. In 1773-74 Golborne served as consulting engineer when a new cut was made below Wisbeach, which was known as "Kinderley's Cut" in honour of Nathaniel Kinderley, who first proposed a scheme of this kind in 1721. By Golborne's admission, this is a preliminary report, giving an estimate of costs but not attempting to determine the course of the new channel. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, WITH HIS UNSIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. With the half-title, and errata leaf bound in at end. The frontispiece, engraved by Chesham, depicts 'Hampstead near the new Medicinal Springs'. The map, engraved by Neele, shows 'Hampstead with some of the Adjacent Villages, and surrounding Rides'. According the author's Address, publication of this work was delayed by some six months because Goodwin wished his experiments to be confirmed by George Pearson. The work is dedicated to Thomas Keate, Surgeon to the Queen and Prince of Wales. EXTREMELY SCARCE. Not in Anderson or Upcott, though Anderson records two earlier works on the medicinal waters, namely those of Soame (1734) and Bliss (1802).
