A View from the Bridge is a play by Pulitzer Prize winning american playwright Arthur Miller first staged on September 29 1955 as a one-act verse drama with A Memory of Two Mondays at the Coronet Theatre on Broadway. The play was unsuccessful and Miller subsequently revised the play to contain two acts; this version is the one with which audiences are most familiar today.The two-act version premièred in the New Watergate theatre club in London's West End under the direction of Peter Brook on October 11 1956. The play is set in 1950s America in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It employs a chorus and narrator in the character of Alfieri. Eddie the tragic protagonist has an improper love of and almost obsession with Catherine.Miller's interest in writing about the world of the New York docks originated with an unproduced screenplay that he developed with Elia Kazan in the early 1950s entitled The Hook that addressed corruption on the Brooklyn docks.Kazan later directed 'On the Waterfront' which dealt with the same subject.Miller said that he heard the basic account that developed into the plot of 'A View from the Bridge' from a lawyer who worked with longshoremen who related it to him as a true story.The 2015 London revival of this play landed two Laurence Olivier Awards and a transfer to Broadway.Very scarce to find as a signed title.Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.</p> Cresset Place hardcover

This was Miller's first full-length play since A View from the Bridge 1958 and was commissioned for the opening production of the Lincoln Center Repertory Company in New York. It premiered on 23 January 1964 and ran for 16 months before closing. This copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn b. 1940 who spent decades as the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story 1978 and The Hollywood Musical 1981. His ownership note is on the front pastedown dated 1985. Octavo. The text is noted on the title page as the "acting version as performed by The Lincoln Center Repertory Company" and differs from that first published in 1964 by The Viking Press. This was Miller's first full-length play since A View from the Bridge 1958 and was commissioned for the opening production of the Lincoln Center Repertory Company. It premiered on 23 January 1964 and ran for 208 performances. The play achieved notoriety for presenting on stage Miller's experiences during his marriage to Marilyn Monroe his despair at the failure of their marriage and then the eager pursuit of a relationship with the photographer Inge Morath. Gerald Kean 1915-2002 was an influential figure in radio and television. His media career started in the Office of War Information during the Second World War. In the 1950s he worked with Himan Brown 1910-2010 the American producer as a radio script writer for Brown's "CBS Radio Mystery Theater". He was also active in the transition of drama from radio to television n the 1960s. The script comprises a title page annotated "#2" a listing of characters the script of Act 1 70 pages and Act 2 61 pages. There are a few scattered examples of pencil underlining. Folio. Mimeographic typescript 133 leaves 280 x 216 mm printed on rectos only. Loosely inserted is a copy of the 1964 Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center programme. Original black wrappers front wrapper lettered in gilt comprising title author and "studio duplicating service inc." name and address two brass screw brads. Housed in a custom red cloth folding box. Wrappers worn with adhesive tape added to edges tears to front cover at screw brad fixing tear to top right corner of title page some light toning throughout and occasional minor spots of foxing: a very good copy. hardcover

New York: The Viking Press 1964. Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth with gilt and burgundy lettering glassine dust jacket slipcase. Fine/very good/near fine. Book tight and pristine glassine a bit age toned and edgeworn per usual. Sharp and lovely first "Special Edition" with limitation page preceding half-title page noting 500 unnumbered copies and boldly signed in blue ink by Miller. This thinly-veiled portrayal of Miller's divorce from wife Marilyn Monroe bears choice relevant autograph additions: Facing the title page is a 3½" X 5½" black-and white magazine photograph -- a full-length candid shot of she in white dress and he in white suit hand in hand; across her white skirt is a bold but secretarial Monroe signature in blue ballpoint -- secretarial remember albeit well done. In addition the front flyleaf bears three special heavy stock 5" X 3" cards signed by a trio from the original 1964 stage cast -- top to bottom: director ELIA KAZAN 1909-2003 Greek-American director producer writer actor and future husband of the play's star Barbara Loden who played "Maggie" who signs boldly in green ink and adds a typed date at upper right of 16 March 1971; male lead JASON ROBARDS who played "Quentin" 1922-2000 American actor of stage film and television nominated for a Tony Award for this play who signs large and bold in black marker; and female supporting role SALOME JENS who played "Holga" born 1935 American stage film and television actress who signs boldly in blue ballpoint and adds date at upper right of "July 8 1969." From the collection of psychiatrist and Menninger Clinic co-founder William C. Menninger 1899-1966 with green printed "Review Copy" slip laid in transmitting this copy to him. Also laid in are original signature transmittal envelopes from Kazan and Jens.
