Complete with the errata slip tipped in before the title page. <br/><br/>Henry Miller's controversial and exuberant account of his time in New York City working for the aptly named Cosmodemonic Telegraph Company. The book was published in France in 1939 by Obelisk Press and like Tropic of Cancer before it was banned in the United States. However Miller's books would be smuggled in and he established a considerable underground reputation before 1961 when the ban was lifted. Many significant writers have been fans of Miller including Lawrence Durrell - who also counted him as a close friend - and George Orwell who said Miller was "the only imaginative prose-writer of the slightest value who has appeared among the English-speaking races for some years past." Like much of Miller's work the book draws strongly and literally on his own life experience and is semi-autobiographical. Henry Church and his wife Barbara were patrons of the arts in 1930s-40s France and were friends with many of the important writers of the era. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the fragile wrappers. With first issue price of 60 francs printed on the spine. With errata slip often not found tipped to title page. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed example of this cornerstone of modern literature. Tropic of Capricorn with its focus on on Henry Miller's Brooklyn youth concludes his famed autobiographical trilogy--following Tropic of Cancer 1934 and Black Spring 1936. Once hailed by Norman Mailer as "the last great American pioneer" Miller sparked much controversy over the novel's explicit descriptions of sexual encounters. "Although his two most important works Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn were published in Paris in the 1930s because of their heavy sexual content they were not published in the United States until the early 1960s when Miller's work became the leading battlefield in the war over 'pornographic' literature" Hoffman 108. Berkeley: Henry Miller and Bezalel Schatz 1947. Edition limited to 800 copies this copy no. 74 signed by Miller and Schatz but Shifreen & Jackson suggest that the first issue was in fact less than 200 -- see below; 4to pp. 86; illustrated throughout in color and the text reproducing Miller's original manuscript; original blue silk-screened cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends lettered in black on spine and with a red felt patch glued to front board as issued; publisher's matching blue cloth slipcase with a few dings and rub marks; a very good copy or better. "This book is entirely a serigraph or silk screen production . Sixteen months were required to bring it forth. With the exception of the text which is originally from Henry Miller's Black Spring . this book is the creation of Bezalel Schatz a Palestinian artist." Shifreen & Jackson A60a: "The copyright page notes that this edition was limited to 800 copies however this is in error. 800 sets of the sheets were printed in 1947 along with the silk screen blue cloth used for the binding. Somewhat less than 200 copies were bound enclosed in slipcases and put on sale in April 1947 and with the remaining sheets stored in Miller's closet. In 1971 and 1977 additional binding of the first edition sheets would occur see Shifreen & Jackson A60b and A60c. Numbered copies with all of the First Edition points are known to exist at least through copy no. 164 . Approximately 400 of the original 600 sets stored in Miller's closet were destroyed by 'worms' also described by Miller as 'rats and fungus'." <br/><br/> Henry Miller and Bezalel Schatz hardcover books
