INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page: "To Mort -- / I feel like I'm sending / a bible to Jesus / but hope you / enjoy this book! / J.R." A self-published guide to betting and winning on pro football games an artifact of an era before all this sort of stuff went online. Although the author was at least forward-looking enough to already be communicating by email -- AOL of course. Laid in to this copy of the book are a 1997 letter and a follow-up email from the author to the inscribee one Mort Olshan -- who in fact was himself a pioneer in the sports betting information industry as the founder and publisher of The Gold Sheet which accounts for the somewhat obsequious tone of the authorial inscription. The Gold Sheet which began publication under a different title in 1957 came to be "the most recognizable newsletter in the industry"; the letter is a pitch by the author to Mr. Olshan to partner in marketing his book. Miller himself was a bit of a notorious character the publisher of something called "Professional Gambler Newsletter" and a pretty relentless self-promoter of his own sports-handicapping genius. He seems to have gone inactive circa 2007 due to some health issues and apparently passed away in 2014. Although one site possibly his own described him as "one of the world's top sports handicappers" it didn't take much searching for me to uncover quite a bit of strong opinion to the contrary; one guy called him "one of the greatest scamdicappers of all time." At any rate this is an interesting "association copy" as it were between two notable figures in the world of sports gambling. And just in case you're wondering -- like I was -- Readyville is an inincorporated community smack dab in the middle of Tennessee midway between Murfreesboro and Woodbury. Signed by Author .
