‎Miller, Arthur Selwyn‎

‎A Capacity for Outrage: The Judicial Odyssey of J. Skelly Wright Contributions in American Studies‎

‎Greenwood Press 1984. Book. Very Good Edges foxed. Hardcover. Inscribed by Authors. 1st Edition. This is the first biography written about Judge J. Skelly Wright a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and previously a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Wright is recognized for exerting a major influence on American landlord-tenant law. Several of his decisions on the D.C. Circuit helped modernize landlord-tenant jurisprudence by incorporating consumer protection principles long accepted in contract law. The J. Skelly Wright Professorship at Yale Law School is named in his honor. The book is inscribed by the author Arthur Selwyn Miller. Miller was a professor of constitutional law at the National Law Center of the George Washington University Law School in Washington from 1961 to 1978. He often testified at congressional hearings and was a consultant to a succession of congressional and presidential committees. One of Miller's consulting roles was for Senator Sam Ervin Jr. the North Carolina Democrat who was chairman of the Senate Select Committee to Investigate Presidential Campaign Practices which looked into the Watergate affair and other elements of the 1972 presidential election. It is inscribed to Henry Julian Abraham a German-born American scholar of judiciary and constitutional law. Abraham was James Hart Professor of Government Emeritus at the University of Virginia. He authored 13 books most in multiple editions and more than 100 articles on the U.S. Supreme Court judicial appointments judicial process and civil rights and liberties. A very nice copy with some pencil notes and underlinings in a very nice lightly edge-worn dust jacket. Laid in is a one-page typed letter to Abraham dated 11/29/84 and signed in the same green ink as the book's inscription in which he thanks Abraham in advance for a book the latter was planning to send. Also stapled to this letter is a typed letter signed from Henry Commager to Arthur Selwyn Miller in which Commager discusses having received Miller's previous letter and articles and read them with immense pleasure. Commager remarks "How interesting that we should make much of the same arguments and even cite some of the same candidates for membership on the court.who might be appointed by Pres. Reagan I fear the first appt. will be Bork-something of a calamity." Miller had forwarded the letter from Commager to Abraham saying "Commager must be mellowing" and proposing a theory that "some of the world's less delightful people" "sons-of-bitches" as they grow older may begin "to feel the cold wind blow across his headstone." Also laid in is a copy of the reply Abraham sent to Miller thanking him for the book and praising its "warm perceptive expert analysis and evaluation." A great association copy with some wonderful insight and gossip. Greenwood Press Hardcover‎

‎A View from the Bridge Two One-Act Plays‎

‎New York: The Viking Press 1955 First edition first printing. Presentation copy signed and inscribed by Miller to American theater critic and editor Otis Guernsey Jr. on front free endpaper: "For Otis Guernsey / With my respect / Arthur Miller." Publisher's red cloth and red patterned boards with spine lettered in white; in the original black dust jacket designed by Robert Hallock with a red bridge illustration to the front panel lettered in white and red. About fine book with some offsetting to endpapers and a couple of small bumps to board edges; good or better unclipped dust jacket with light fading to spine a couple of minor scratches to front panel light soiling to spine and rear panel small closed tear to bottom edge of rear panel and light spotting to jacket flaps. Overall a great presentation copy. From Otis Guernsey Jr.'s personal library. A View from the Bridge tells the story of Italian American Eddie Carbone as he harbors two family members who have immigrated to the United States illegally. The play first appeared as a one-act play alongside A Memory of Two Mondays and was produced by Martin Ritt on September 29 1955 at the Coronet Theatre in New York. Despite Miller's reverence for the format of the one-act play he later revised and extended A View From a Bridge so that it consisted of two acts. Otis Guernsey Jr. 1918 - 2001 was an influential American theater critic and editor who worked at the New York Herald Tribune for 19 years 1941 - 1960 moving up the ranks from copy boy to drama critic and arts editor. From 1964 to 2000 he edited 36 volumes of the highly respected Best Plays Theater Yearbook series and released highly regarded annual lists of his 10 favorite plays of the year. A member of the New York Drama Critics Circle Pulitzer Committee for Drama and Tony Award nominating committee he was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2001. Otis Guernsey Jr. was a big proponent of Miller's work. In a New York Times article he's quoted as saying that Miller's Death of a Salesman is "the best play written in my lifetime." Elaborating he says "'It shocked us all to realize that the American dream was not enough and that we never found what it was we should be pursuing" Dec. 22 1987. He also helped bring Death of a Salesman to television in 1966 while serving as a CBS consultant. . Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. A View from the Bridge is a play by Pulitzer Prize winning american playwright Arthur Miller first staged on September 29 1955 as a one-act verse drama with A Memory of Two Mondays at the Coronet Theatre on Broadway. The play was unsuccessful and Miller subsequently revised the play to contain two acts; this version is the one with which audiences are most familiar today. The two-act version premièred in the New Watergate theatre club in London's West End under the direction of Peter Brook on October 11 1956. The play is set in 1950s America in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It employs a chorus and narrator in the character of Alfieri. Eddie the tragic protagonist has an improper love of and almost obsession with Catherine.Miller's interest in writing about the world of the New York docks originated with an unproduced screenplay that he developed with Elia Kazan in the early 1950s entitled The Hook that addressed corruption on the Brooklyn docks.Kazan later directed 'On the Waterfront' which dealt with the same subject.Miller said that he heard the basic account that developed into the plot of 'A View from the Bridge' from a lawyer who worked with longshoremen who related it to him as a true story. The 2015 London revival of this play landed two Laurence Olivier Awards and a transfer to Broadway.Very scarce to find as a signed title.Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.</p> Cresset Place hardcover‎

‎After the Fall‎

‎New York: Viking Press 1964. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Octavo 114pp. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's yellow boards with black cloth spine. In a very good dust jacket with some unnecessary tape repairs to verso and some scuffing and small tears. This copy SIGNED and quite warmly INSCRIBED by Miller on the front free endpaper: "To Gerald Henri Kean - I am grateful to you for your interest in my works especially after the clamor of first-nights has receded and all that remains is perhaps a bit of beauty waiting to be shared. I wish you well sir Arthur Miller Aug. 1976." Though we were unable to identify Kean we will note that this is the most effusive Miller inscription that we've handled. Viking Press hardcover‎
