‎MILLER, Henry‎

‎ARCHIVE OF 25 SIGNED LETTERS ETC‎

‎1968 - 1976. Letter. Very Good to Near Fine. Includes 23 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED ALSs 2 TYPED LETTERS SIGNED TLSs 3 SIGNED INSCRIPTIONS and various materials including an audio recording on cd of a 1980 Celebration of Miller at The New School. The recipient is actress and friend Fiddle Viracola. One letter is SIGNED in full; the others are SIGNED "Henry" or "Henry San." The archive includes 10 handwritten postcards and 21 pages of handwriting with 14 envelopes hand addressed by Miller and 3 SIGNED promotional pieces. Much discussion of Miller's work including his art and films based on his work. In a 1970 letter he mentions a documentary film Robert Snyder's THE HENRY MILLER ODYSSEY: "No national distributor yet -- for cinemas. But if 'Cancer' film the X-rated 1970 TROPIC OF CANCER is a hit will probably get offers. In May another film will be released thru Barney Rosset of Grove Press-- 'Quiet Days in Clichy" produced by young Danish players. May be sexier shockinger than Cancer film." He mentions well-known friends including Anais Nin Lawrence Durrell Yes Larry D. was here 10 days-- champagne every day" Isaac B. Singer "what a wonderful man he is!" Marcel Marceau "My ping pong is still excellent-- I beat Marcel Marceau at it the other night" and Erica Jong "I want you to go out and buy this book--'Fear of Flying.'". He comments on books and film: "Last night at dinner here we had 3 beautiful women from Montreal one of them being Genevieve Bujold. I forgot that I had seen her in 'King of Hearts' which I thought was a stinkerino of a film -- so phony such a French Farce and so utterly uninsane!" Miller mentions that he has 4 astrologer friends who help him predict his future: "Will tell you more when I get word from my Swiss astrologer. Only advantage of computer I can see is in the time saving. Surely the computer doesn't do the writing does it There are some dark mysterious lines in the 6-month forecast. Really inscrutable -- until the event occurs." Another subject is spirituality: "Yes I do say that mantra every day as often as the impulse comes and I have had nothing but wonderful results wonderful surprises. I don't say it like to beg favors of the Almighty if you know what I mean which reminds me of this attributed to the Buddha which I find marvelous:-- 'I obtained not the least thing from unexcelled complete awakening and for this very reason it is called unexcelled complete awakening' . Yes lots of wonderful things happen now. But only I imagine because I aid the Creator in making them happen. Any thing said or done sincerely not piously but humbly works. All is magic and mystery. Trust in the Lord!"

unknown‎

‎MILLER, Henry‎

‎Black Spring.‎

‎Paris: The Obelisk Press 1936. Friendship and censorship First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author on the first blank "To Huntingdon Cairns with all best wishes - in remembrance of pleasant days in Paris. Henry Miller 8/36". As the United States Censor in the 1930s and 40s Cairns declared the author's first four novels obscene and banned them from the US. Despite this he personally enjoyed Miller's writing and became one of the author's most committed advocates and friends. Cairns 1904-1985 was appointed the official US Censor in the Customs Bureau by the Secretary of the Treasury in 1934. One of his first acts in that role was to reluctantly ban Miller's first novel Tropic of Cancer due to its pornographic content. As well as an assiduous lawyer Cairns was a sensitive reader a writer of essays and book reviews and friends to several literary figures in his Baltimore circle. One of these the critic H. L. Mencken received a contraband copy of Tropic of Cancer from Miller which he forwarded to Cairns. "Informed by Mencken that Cairns had read and admired Cancer Miller wrote to Cairns in May 1936 announcing the imminent publication of another controversial book Black Spring and offering to send it to him. A few months later Cairns and his wife Florence were in Paris and the two men met" Hoyle 2014. There Miller presented Cairns with this copy which Cairns read while travelling back to the US. He wrote to Miller on his return: "It filled me with admiration. I know of no other writer who is more naturally a novelist or who writes anything approaching your power" quoted in Hoyle 2017. Following their meeting Cairns worked to obtain favourable reviews for Miller's writing hoping to raise his profile as a serious novelist. Despite his efforts Black Spring was not published in the US until 1963. The two men nevertheless enjoyed a friendly correspondence for more than 25 years Miller writing to Cairns in 1939 that "I consider you along with Emil Schnellock my two American friends" quoted in Hoyle 2017. This is the first issue priced 50 francs on the front flap and rear wrapper. Octavo. Original orange wrappers printed in red front wrapper illustration by Maurice Kahane edges untrimmed. Wraps and contents toned as often minimal rubbing to extremities a near-fine copy.
