The recipients were James and Tania Stern close friends of the author. Very good in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition with some rubbing and wear. Like the ancient colossus that stood over the harbor of Rhodes Henry Miller’s The Colossus of Maroussi stands as a seminal classic in travel literature. It has preceded the footsteps of prominent travel writers such as Pico Iyer and Rolf Potts. The book Miller would later cite as his favorite began with a young woman’s seductive description of Greece. Miller Signs and dates the front flyleaf of the book with a long inscription; " To Number one Boy Pierce for his voyage East and all voyages." He goes on in French; "Tout homme qui n'accepte pas les conditions de la vie vend son âme." Baudelaire Henry at Beverly Glen 6/4/43." Translated the Baudelaire quote reads; "Any man who does not accept the conditions of life sells his soul." "Miller became fluent in French during his ten-year stay in Paris and lived in France until June 1939. He moved to California in June 1942 living in Beverly Glen for over a year. Condition: 8vo. 363 pages - Publishers' beige cloth boards with brown print to the spine and the Cosmological Eye pastedown on the front cover now rubbed and worn. Some unfortunate staining most notable on the front cover and spine darkening to the spine corners rubbed with some fraying and softening to the upper spine tip. Jacket has price of $3 on first flap at bottom and has same cover design as true first but back panel mentions Miller on Rimbaud that appears in New Directions 1946 so this jacket and possibly book date to 1946 not 1939. Jacket is whole but there is 3" closed tear on back panel that links to small chip and another small chip at bottom of back panel and quite a bit of creasing and edgewear on front panel not excessive still collectible.
