The first edition consisted of 1000 copies the next four printings were 500 copies each so this is one of the first 3000 copies. Quarto. 396pps. with 24 full-color lithographs and numerous smaller illustrations printed in brown. Also a thirteen page Preface 'Le Lyrisme de Henry Miller' by Henri Fluchere. First Edition with this artwork. All signatures and the portfolio are in Fine condtion clean and bright. The chemise is Near Fine with a couple of small scratches. The slipcase having taken whatever wear there is is in Very Good condition with moderate rubbing light soiling and light edge-chipping; it does appear however that the top of the slipcase had at one point been separated and re-glued. In all a very nice copy of an uncommon item. Text printed on heavy Marais stock. Typography by Marcel Schiffer of Paris using a Baskerville font. The whole dream was a series of paintings really. the kitchen was a fantastic abstract painting - high ceiling with open cabinets containing supermarket quantities of canned goods - arranged in abstract form as to color etc not pop art-! Blobs of luscious reds obviously tomatoes plums crab-apples etc. . . I turned and looked up and there were 5 or 6 8' watercolors - all in rich pastel colors - all of the streets tall apartments city scenes - Paris New York that feeling - . . . I then call Levine in New York and he was most cordial. . . He said they were having script problems. . . He spoke very highly of you and said he was sorry that you didn't get to meet Carol Baker as originally planned" - "In connection with the application for insurance Embassy Joe Levine has been asked by the carrier to find out from you which of the characters are actual persons. . . Turret Books London 1971; 4to 187 x 240mm; unpaginated; black cloth with the authors' signatures blocked in silver at the top right; charcoal dust wrapper with two portraits on Perelès by Miller in silver and titled in blue on the back; very slight fraying at the head of the spine and with a very few light scuff marks on the back cover but nevertheless a fine copy in near mint condition; frontispiece portrait of Perlès by Miller printed in white on blue laid paper; 3pp preface by Miller prelims 28pp facsimile of the original June 1938 publication of the Letter 3pp epilogue by Perlès. This is an out of series copy of the limited edition 100 being signed by Miller and Perlès with a further 250 unsigned; the two signatures appear under the limitation claim and are repeated in blind embossed form on an otherwise blank prelim page. . . . . Perlès was an old friend of Miller's from their time working in the Paris offices of the Chicago Tribune Miller submitting articles under his friend's name to get round the bar on non-editorial staff submitting material. Perlés later fell on hard times and in 1935 Miller published a plea for financial help for 'alms' as he called it. This was later published under the imprint Bern Porter Berkely in 1938 and again in 1944 these later publications not financial solicitations but published for possible wider interest; that 1944 publication is that reprinted here with the additions mentioned. <br/> <br/> hardcover‎
