Miller, Henry; Anais Nin [Preface]
Tropic of Cancer
Paris: The Obelisk Press 1934. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition first printing of this literary high spot. One of 1000 copies in publisher's original printed wrappers with price of 50 fr. intact Front wrapper printed with Maurice J. Kahane's striking crab and globe design. Near Fine with browning and light soiling to wraps light edge wear top corner lightly bumped and light creasing to wraps. Contents tanned. Housed in a custom chemise slipcase.
The scarce first appearance of Miller's scandalously erotic novel which would eventually test the boundaries of free speech in America and become a landmark of 20th century literature rare in the original wrappers. Since so many copies of the first edition were seized by authorities in England and the U.S. The Obelisk Press discarded the printed wrappers in favor of less conspicuous plain ones for the second and subsequent editions. Tropic of Cancer
New York: Medvsa 1940. An extraordinary copy in effect the dedication copy. First American edition designated by Shifreen & Jackson as the "Eighth Edition/First American Edition/Medvsa Edition. 1000 copies printed with an overrun of 200-500. "Before printing Gershon Legman added the colophon "Imprenta de México 1940" "for fun" and to direct attention from the 25th Street New York place of publication since the book was banned from the United States at the time." Shifreen & Jackson A9j. Miller's dear friend Emil Schnellock's copy with a full-page inscription by Miller to Schnellock on the front free endpaper: "Fredericksburg VA Dear Emil I don't remember the original dedication but this will do - like Shakespeare's horse you talk about - "for all time". To my friend Emil who standing on a street corner pushed me into that world I always wanted to see and finally saw. Hallelujah! Henry 12/1/44." There are pencil notes in the text but they appear to us to be in Schnellock's hand. Miller and Schnellock met as schoolboys at P.S. No. 85 in Brooklyn class of 1905 - "a standing joke between them as the letters show . . . They then went to different high schools and lost sight of each other for many years during which Schnellock traveled and studied in Europe. Thus when a chance encounter brought them together again in 1921 Miller regarded his old friend with awe marveling that na ordinary Brooklyn boy should have become an accomplished artist and cosmopolite. That encounter as Miller frequently remarked had a decisive influence on his life." - Introduction Letters to Emil p. vii. It is that "decisive moment" that Miller alludes to in his inscription. Accompanied by one of Schnellock's notebooks with drawings and text and a copy of Letters to Emil. Edited by George Wickes London: Carcanet 1990 which comprises Miller's voluminous correspondence with Schnellock from 1922-1934 a project that Miller had conceived in 1938: "In September 1938 Henry Miller announced among other works in preparation a book called "Letters to Emil" to be published in the Villa Seurat Series that he was then editing for the Obelisk Press in Paris. The letters . . . had recently been assembled and transcribed; only the task of editing remained. . . . what with the distractions of the Munich Crisis his struggles with Tropic of Capricorn his visit to Greece and the outbreak of the war he never got around to editing the letters." - Introduction Letters to Emil p. vii. Miller, Henry
Tropic of Cancer.
New York:: Grove Press 1961. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. Set in France primarily Paris during the late 1920s and early 1930s Tropic of Cancer centers on Miller's life as a struggling writer.Combining autobiography and fiction some chapters follow a narrative of some kind and refer to Miller's actual friends colleagues and workplaces; others are written as stream-of-consciousness reflections that are occasionally epiphanic. The novel is written in the first person as are many of Miller's other novels and does not have a linear organization but rather fluctuates frequently between the past and present. The book largely serves as an immersive meditation on the human condition. Grove Press, unknown

Miller, Henry
Tropic of Cancer with Tropic of Capricorn
Paris: The Obelisk Press 1939. First Editions. Minor rubbing and split to the spine of Tropic of Cancer else two near fine books in the originl wrappers without restoration. Both with custom boxes. Tropic of Cancer is primarily set in Bohemian Paris around 1930 where the locals could stay up on New Year’s Eve and watch their hopes drop. It’s half autobiography and half exaggerated fantasy but it’s mainly lighthearted and its promiscuous carnal zeal is from a more sincere time.

Tropic of Capricorn is a first edition in English despite the Paris imprint and likely first issue though the price has been scratched out on front flap and spine a part of the ‘0’ is legible on the front flap so it was not stamped over and there is no ‘175.00’ printed on the rear wrapper. Despite this we will pretend it’s a 2nd issue and include it with Tropic of Cancer for free.

Tropic of Cancer was banned in and difficult to buy in or even bring into the U. S. until 1961 and the preoccupations of the '30s '40s and '50s didn't help its ready availability migrating to my question about moral as opposed to political suppression. If some novel depraves and corrupts why then is the person chosen to be the censor always the person who is the most depraved and corrupted This paradox echoes Justice Potter Stewart's famous "I know it when I see it" obscenity standard from the 1964 Jacobellis v. Ohio case highlighting how subjective and self-referential censorship judgments inherently become as those who claim to identify moral corruption must necessarily be intimate with the very content they condemn. MILLER, Henry
Tropic of Cancer.
Paris: The Obelisk Press 1938. Inscribed to a rakish poet and fellow mystic First edition third printing presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Audrey from Henry Miller who is now on the other side of the Equator preparing to write 'Draco and the Ecliptic'" his unrealised self-reflective mystical project. Tropic of Cancer was first published in 1934; early printings are rarely found inscribed. A "poet and eccentric" ODNB Audrey Beecham descended from Thomas Beecham the founder of the eponymous pharmaceuticals empire. She once took an extended holiday from her Oxford studies to run guns for the anarchists in the Spanish Civil War. When she left Oxford with a second-class degree in 1937 she moved to Paris where she befriended Miller Anaïs Nin who contributes the preface to Tropic and Lawrence Durrell. Miller the editor of Delta published a handful of Beecham's poems in the magazine. She was fascinated with witchcraft and folklore and "believed herself capable of casting spells and affecting friends and enemies by them" ODNB: she and Miller presumably bonded over their shared mysticism. In the 1940s Beecham spent much of her time in London where she garnered a serious poetic reputation and befriended Joe Ackerley and Dylan Thomas: "she prided herself on her mastery of martial arts and on her claim to have knocked out Dylan Thomas cold when he made unwelcome advances to her" ODNB To the surprise of her contemporaries she applied for and was appointed the warden of Nightingale Hall the women's residence at the University of Nottingham in 1950. Lord David Cecil remarked on her unexpected appointment that "There's no martinet like a reformed rake" ODNB. Miller wrote to many friends regarding "Draco and the Ecliptic". To Hermann Keyserling he defined the work as a "joyous book of the mystic"; to Emil Schnellock he foresaw it as "the heaven beyond heaven" Cosmotc; to Lawrence Durrell he admitted: "haven't the least idea what it will be like - just know it must be done" cited in Wickes. Octavo. Original light green wrappers with flaps wrappers lettered in dark green. Housed in a custom red cloth flat-backed box. Spine creased with short closed tears at joints wrappers soiled and sunned silverfishing at foot of front wrapper and flap edges nicked and rubbed text block toned firm and internally clean. A good copy. Pearson A32c; Porter p. 10. "Draco & The Ecliptic: The Book That Wasn't" Cosmodemonic Telegraph Company: A Henry Miller Blog 5 November 2005 available online; George Wickes ed. Miller, Henry
Tropic of Capricorn.
New York:: Grove Press 1961. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Near Fine tight square copy with owner name stamped on front pastedown in a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with a sreak of rubbing to the front panel. Tropic of Capricorn is Miller's semi-autobiographical novel first published by Obelisk Press in Paris in 1939. It is a prequel of sorts to Miller's first published novel 1934's Tropic of Cancer Sales of the book along with Tropic of Cancer were boosted by the controversy surrounding their censorship with complaints against Miller and his publisher on charges of pornography. Tropic of Capricorn was banned in the United States until a 1961 Justice Department ruling declared that its contents were not obscene After Grove Press published the novel in the US in September 1962 Miller gained a new younger generation of readers for his work which coincided with the sexual revolution of the 1960s. He was seen by many as a champion of the new sexual freedom and was endorsed by well-known literary figures of the time including Allen Ginsberg William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.
